McCarthy Already Considering Extending Spence's Contract
Thursday, 16th Feb 2017 16:21

Town boss Mick McCarthy says he’s already considering offering recent signing Jordan Spence a longer term contract.

The 26-year-old joined the Blues on a deal to the end of the season last month having previously spent time on trial at Portman Road in September and October when he played two games for the U23s.

The former West Ham and MK Dons man, primarily a right-back, has made three starts and two sub appearances for Town in a variety of positions, most recently on the right of the back three.

“He’s done very well,” McCarthy said. “It makes you wonder why and how he’s not somewhere else. He came here [in September] and Chambo was playing right-back and we had Josh Emmanuel, of course, so circumstances were different.

“He didn’t stay, he went elsewhere and the fact that he was still available in the January window was to our benefit.

“And to his because he’s come and he’s played and he’s done very, very well and we’d have to be looking and thinking, ‘Can we give him a longer deal?’.

“But that’s for another day, let him keep playing, let’s keep getting performances and results with him in the team.”

He's done a decent job. Looking like the kind of player we need to have in the squad.

He's been okay. Much will depend on MM future at the club. No point giving longer term deals to players not wanted by a new manager. If MM is staying then I can see hard working spence is likely to be part of his plans.

I don't see why not, although I think Chambers should be the first deal done.

I expect we could sign how on a lower wage now than if he continues to do well and we try to sign him competing against other clubs in the summer. He is still only 26 so the former England U21 player could be worth a decent fee if he progresses well here.

It would seem morally wrong to offer Spence a new deal ahead of Chambers though. Luke has been magnificent in recent matches and showed a top, top attitude. I know he is older, but I would hope we could agree a new contract with him if both sides are realistic about the wages.

If he's only on a contract until the end of the season, I can see the point of sorting out a longer term deal for Spence, as rightly or wrongly, the club already view Chambers as being here next season as they have that option of another season already in place. They would surely be doing something a bit more about it without that option there. What they need to do is decide if they want to offer Chambo a longer deal than just the one more year. His performances of late suggest he'd be worth another 2 years for definite, in my opinion.

I think he would be a good addition long term with him at right back with Josh in front of him means Chambers can stay in the middle where he has shown his ability(and courage!) in the past few games it also means we can stop putting players in unnatural positions and struggling as the opposition have been so quick to pick up on, the only fly in the ointment is the returning favourite Skuse who should either sit on the bench or keep fit in the under 23's.

We are all assuming Chambers wants to stay. If you believe the talk Forest offered a three year deal and more money.

I didn't have a great deal of time to write earlier....

In defence, I think Spence has had the same kind of impact that Webster had, he's made an amazing start to his ITFC career. I'd heard really good things about him but he's actually been better than those expectations. Best outfielder in our last game and looks the part wherever he has been asked to play. I feel a good reason for our recent good form is down to him, and we should do everything we can to retain him. May well turn into an automatic first choice at the back, but I'm caught between him being a centre-back or a right-back. I really rate Emmanuel, and would like to see Spence in a back five with Emmanuel outside him. He could occasionally alternate in order to allow Spence to surge forward with those mazy runs.

It is unbelievable that nobody had signed Spence up. He's a Premier League player in the making.
