Hyam Set for U23s Return
Thursday, 9th Feb 2017 19:39

Midfielder Luke Hyam has been pencilled in to make his long-awaited return to action with the U23s next week, the 25-year-old having been out of action since the pre-season friendly at Cambridge United with a knee injury, which eventually required surgery.

“Luke is back training now and he will probably play next week for the U23s,” manager Mick McCarthy told the club site.

“That’s great news for us and more importantly great news for Luke. He’s been out a long time and has had to deal with the mental stresses and strains that go with a long injury.”

Town’s U23s are in Premier League Cup action against West Brom at the Hawthorns on Monday with Tommy Smith also likely to feature (KO 7pm).

The 26-year-old New Zealand international played in Monday’s 8-0 walloping of Watford’s U23s, his first game since undergoing back surgery in September.

Good for him, it must be tough being out so long and seeing Diagouraga join the club in his position (albeit on loan).

How long left does Luke have on his contract?

It would be no surprise if he went out on loan to a lowly champ team like Wigan, as per the Rotherham deal last season for the remainder of the season.

Glad to hear you're back, Luke. You're a tough competitor and one of our own. I saw you play a great game at home to Wolves in November 2014 and I thought you were close to the real breakthrough we all hoped for you, mate, doing the yards and getting up the pitch. Wish you the best of luck to push back into the team.

No32 he can't be sent out on loan to any football league club. "emergency loans" are a thing of the past. MM kept mentioning it pre season

He could do with loan to National league and head shave :-)

Can't see him getting back in this team now tbh. I'd have the Leeds lad in there ahead of Luke Hyam any day I'm afraid. Has far more about him. Sadly I think LH days as a Town player are numbered now.

........ hope he's been watching videos of how to pass sideways / forward - as opposed to the previous sideways / backwards.

Glad to have him back. Personally if we are going to have a midfield 3 with one of them being streetwise I'd love Bish Dozzell and Hyam long term personally.

He's worked bloody hard to get there. Massively respect the level of commitment to do so. Have a good one pal 💪🏻

Good news for him. Get fit and then may stand him in good stead to find a new club in the summer. Doubt he will play for us as we have numerous similar options.

Glad to hear it, he has had a tough year and must be raring to get playing again. Better option than Skuse or Douglas and has age on his side. Blue through and through and with some more positive players around him could do well again. Personally I feel we have missed the energy he brings to midfield and the closing down on the opponents. Hopefully he can do enough to get his self back in the team and earn an extension to his contract.

Mark - Hyam's contract runs to 2018 with an option of another year.

I was wondering where Luke Higham was (especially as there is another Luke Higham who plays for Blackpool and is on loan somewhere else). Good to know he is getting better after his injury and surgery and may get back to the first team soon. Goodluck and best wishes to Luke and competition is getting fierce now with many new signings for Town which will hopefully give the team a much needed boost! Away at Villa tomorrow..so COYB. Town were a bit better against Reading (might not say much, but it is a bit positive and a start to find some return to form and confidence!). They will need to on top form and show lots of grit and strength of character against Villa...COYB, show us what you are made of (show plenty of steel to get either a win or a draw..) COYB!
