Bishop Plays the Full 90 Minutes But U23s Fall to Heavy Defeat at Charlton
Monday, 30th Jan 2017 15:15

Teddy Bishop played the full 90 minutes but Town’s U23s fell to a 4-0 defeat at Charlton this afternoon.

The 20-year-old was making his second U23s appearance since returning from an ankle ligament injury.

Speaking about the midfielder at lunchtime, manager Mick McCarthy said: “He needs a game he’s only had 60 minutes in the last eight weeks. If he gets through 90 minutes today he’ll be a lot better off for Saturday [when Reading visit Portman Road].”

Mikhail Kennedy netted a second-half hat-trick for the Addicks after Josh Umerah had given them a 1-0 lead in a game played at Greenwich Borough.

U23s: Crowe, Woolfenden, Fowler, C Smith, Webber, McDonnell, Nydam (Folami 72), Blanchfield, Bishop, Morris (McKendry 82), Patterson. Unused: Wright, Ndaba, Robinson.

Said it before and will say it again. Fringe players are half asleep. We have no coaches. No passion no enthusiasm no nothing. Every game no matter the level should be played like it is life or death which of course it is.

Surely thsee are the games where youngsters make their case to break into the first team? Questions to answer.

Could it be that this is why Mick Macarthy isn't putting them up for the first team yet ?

Crap from top to bottom this club is in complete turmoil and it's down to Evans and McCarth

Shocking result.. there's a bad work ethic floating around our once great club..

The result wasn't a true reflection of the game. Ipswich played extremely well first half and it's about development at youth level and hopefully progressing in to the first team.

This is where the club's problem is. We bang on about how good Tom Lawrence, Jonny Williams or Fraser is but in fact this club has only EVER thrived when it's had a productive youth system. Wark, Brazil, Butcher etc. For Robson. Dozzell, Kiwomya, Whelan for Lyall. Dyer, Tony Vaughan, Scowcroft, Wright for Burley. Alongside shrewd signings from lower divisions or Holland. Not from loans, big money signings and anyone from Ireland. This club will stagnate until REAL quality comes through.

OK so we have no clue how Bishop played - but HE PLAYED THE WHOLE GAME so that has to be good. bench on Saturday I guess.

This is a disappointing result with several of the team hoping to break into the first, Charlton are not exactly a high flying team so how can there under 23 team be that good. Does not bode well for the future.

Only won one of last 6 games;so doesn't look like much first team material in under 23's

Bishop was okay, but hardly stood out. Woolfenden, the right back, was excellent, I thought. We have three now! Thought Blanchfield at No.8 did well, Nydam saw plenty of the ball but rarely found any space. Although Charlton are a club that last year were experiencing the kind of crisis we can only have nightmares about, their U23s are great - well-drilled, know exactly how they want to play and just went for it so much more. Although I'd agree Town were unlucky to lose by four, they were hesitant when the chances fell for them and, like the first team, it seemed that chances came almost when they least expected it - as if there isn't really a plan of attack. Much as I hate to say it, watching those young players today gave me the strong feeling that everything needs ripping up and starting again.

Our coaching staff need to spend time at a Premiership set up to see how they motivate and coach young players. Are our reserve players actually improving because the regular defeats seem a common occurrence. Maybe we need better coaching staff ? Better still, why don,t we recruit good young players released from Premiership clubs ?
