McCarthy: Nice to Hear Players Taking Responsibility
Friday, 27th Jan 2017 16:51

Boss Mick McCarthy says it’s good to hear players taking responsibility, skipper Luke Chambers having said recent performances have let their manager down following last week’s 2-0 defeat at Huddersfield.

“I don’t want apologies from people because I don’t think I deserve that,” McCarthy said. “I don’t think any of them let me down intentionally and I never, ever blame the players and I’d never start now at this ripe old age. But it’s nice if players do take the responsibility as well.

“I’ve heard some saying players are getting stick but I have to say when I’m walking off the pitch and we’ve got beat, I didn’t hear any players’ names getting mentioned. I think pretty much it was mine.

“And that’s cool, I’d prefer that, to be honest with you. I said to the players, we all have to own our little bit of it, whatever it might be. I own the whole of it so I’m taking responsibility for every bit of it, and am quite happy to do so.

“But your little one bit of responsibility is your own individual bit - did I win enough headers, did I win enough tackles, did I give something away, did I make enough passes, did I make enough crosses, did I stick it up front, did I get a goal when I should have done.

“That’s their responsibility, which I cannot do anything about. I pick them and I put them in the team. That is what you have to own, that little bit. 'God grant me the serenity [to accept the things I cannot change]'. All of that.”

McCarthy says Chambers is an excellent captain and believes new addition Steven Taylor will also add his leadership qualities to the squad.

“Chambo’s pretty much the leader of the pack, he’s a great captain, he is recognised by everybody in there, he’s ‘Skip’,” McCarthy said.

“I love the fact they call him that, they recognise he is the captain, he’s the leader. But we can do with a few more of them and I think Steven can add to that.”

Well they're not exactly going to come out and slaughter you in the press are they. Besides, Luke Chambers has the easiest job in the footballing world being picked by you every week regardless of how he plays so of course he backs you!

He's slaughtered 10 hens, poured the blood and feathers onto Leon Best and sent him to walk out into the desert.

Our embarassing exit out of both cups, our current league position and the complete lack of cohesion or confidence in our squad is entirely down to Mick McCarthy. Utter disgrace.

How the hell is he still here?

Great captain. Shame he'd a terrible fullback. However let's not let the finer details get in the way

Did I win enough headers, did I win enough tackles, did I stick it upfront?! Wish there was more of, Was I brace enough with the ball? Did I take responsibility to make a difference? Did I try & win the game? Once again Mick's comments are always on the downside, battling against the odds, football is moving away from this now & so should ITFC

Time you stepped up to your major share in this debacle McCarthy. You appear to think you're the best manager in the Championship in reality you're out of date and well below average. Please for once do the decent thing and GO.

It's up to the manager to be responsible for the results and you are sadly lacking Mick!

Yes, the players should shoulder SOME responsibility, but the buck stops with MM. Sadly, his insistence to keep playing the likes of Douglas when a) he blatantly isn't good enough and b) more importantly his confidence is shot - presumably because the fans don't want him to start - is baffling.

This is ridiculous!...Unless I'm missing something here if a team plays badly the players have to start looking at themselves as the manager has done everything in his powers to ensure 3 points each saturday afternoon, what I've seen this season that's not the case. Ever thought Mick that some of the players you have relied on In the last few seasons might be past their best or some others deserve a regular start over the ones not perfroming?

Claus,

I'm not one to think McCarthy is the one to take us any further, but I don't think he can be entirely to blame for the lack of confidence in the squad. I don't imagine the booing and the jeers they get the moment they make a slight mistake helps much

Get over your personal dislike of MM. He says too much which feeds his detractors but if he was mute you would all complain. He has his faults but I don't think for one minute that he plays a player because he is a 'proper bloke' or puts Douglas on to wind people up. He makes decisions some of which I disagree with but at least give him credit for supporting his players but getting rid of bad apples. Five additions, albeit modest ones, is progress so at least get behind the team against Derby and see what happens.

@Swn98 - surprised you would know what fresh air was like as you've been swimming against the tide of opinion for so long.

Bert - agree with your post to a degree re: the 5 additions but lets not introduce into the argument what he did with the 'bad apples' it is well and truly in the past and yes you heard me it say it, he was the right manager to be brought in at the time.
