McCarthy: Webster Out for the Season
Thursday, 19th Jan 2017 14:07

Town boss Mick McCarthy has confirmed that central defender Adam Webster has been ruled out for the remainder of the season having suffered damaged ligaments in training earlier this week.

“He’s out for the rest of the season,” McCarthy said. “He’s done his ankle ligaments, ruptured them, so he needs an operation.

“It just happened in training, he went to nick a ball and he rolled his ankle and he’s ruptured them unfortunately.

“It’s a blow for him and for us. It hurts everybody when you get somebody like that injured, but he’s on the upward curve, he’s had his move, he’s been excellent. And then for us it’s sad that we’re losing such a good player for the rest of the season.”

Town, who can include new signings Kieffer Moore and Jordan Spence in their squad for Saturday's trip to Huddersfield, the duo having been unavailable for Tuesday’s FA Cup defeat at Lincoln, have had significant injury problems this season, although Brett Pitman (calf) and Teddy Bishop (ankle) are close to making their returns.

“If we hadn’t had bad luck we’d have had no luck at all with injuries,” McCarthy reflected. “We’ve got a couple coming back though today, Pits has trained, Teddy Bishop has trained, so they’re getting closer. But it’s been a bad season for injuries.

“Pits will travel, he’ll be in the squad but Teddy will play on Sunday [for the U23s in the Premier League Cup] at Liverpool.”

He says on-loan Crystal Palace man Jonny Williams is undergoing his rehab at Playford Road but is still some way off a return to action having undergone shoulder surgery.

“Jonny is here, he’s progressing nicely but there was a time limit to it and that’s still the same,” he said.

“He’s not going to be any longer, there’s nothing gone wrong with it, he should be back when they said he was going to be back, the beginning of March, I believe.”

Left-back Myles Kenlock is out for around another couple of weeks with a calf injury, while David McGoldrick (hamstring) is expected back for the trip to Preston a week on Saturday.

Luke Hyam (knee) and Tommy Smith (back) are both back in training after surgery and are expected to play U23s games at the beginning of February. Midfielder Giles Coke (knee) also remains sidelined after an operation.

Webster's injury will force us back to 442 given that Diggers would be a risk in a 3 CB backline. Positive is that Emmanual should get a run while Spence bides his time on bench. Wondering if Moore might get a start after Best showed very little but of course most strikers would struggle with our lack of service from midfield. Would like to see the following start on Saturday:
Bialkowski
Emmanual Chambers Berra Knudsen
Lawrence Scuse Dozzell Ward
Sears Moore

Surely could not fare any worse than the Tuesday night lot.......

Sorry but even when Joniesta and Bishop were fit they only sat on the bench watching 'different class Dougie' anyway so to say it's affected our season is b0ll0cks.

What has ruined our season is continually playing 2 defensive holding midfielders together when it is painfully obvious to everyone who isn't Big Mick it doesn't work, we don't create anything, we don't score any goals and there is a massive gap in the middle of the park where our midfield should be which opponents frequently exploit because our central midfielders are about 2 yards in front of our defence. People complain about hoof ball but what other options do our defenders have ? against Fulham(i think) Knudsen gave the ball to Skuse and got it back, then gave it to Douglas and got it back so after 2 failed attempts to play the ball on the ground into midfield failed he hit it long up the line.

When Douglas has played alongside Skuse we have won 3 games out of 21. when he hasn't we have 7 wins out of 9 - it is not rocket science. If MM saw that then there may be the smallest glimmer of hope for him but Skuse / Douglas seems to be his 'go to' formula. I seriously don't get it because in the last few games he has left Douglas out we have won 3-2 at Wigan, 2-1 against Bristol City and 3-2 against Blackburn but he always follows it up by bringing Douglas back in and a dull draw / defeat follows.

Oh dear that means Douggie will play every game to ( trying not to laugh) tighten up our defence.

Pencilpete - very interesting stats regarding Scuse - Douglas combination. It must be very comforting for the opposition teams when they see these two together as they would immediately know that they can press high with very little risk. It is extraordinary in light of your revelation that Scuse-Douglas combo has played so much ....... either MM is oblivious to your stat or completely imbecilic....... I leave others to ponder that one.....
