McCarthy Set to Watch Dundalk Winger Horgan
Thursday, 24th Nov 2016 09:51

Town boss Mick McCarthy is reportedly set to travel to Ireland this evening to watch winger Daryl Horgan in action for Airtricity League Premier Division champions Dundalk in their Europa League game against AZ Alkmaar.

According to the Irish Independent McCarthy will be at the game but Dundalk have turned down requests for tickets for scouts from more than 20 overseas clubs as interest grows in a number of their players.

The Blues have watched Horgan, who will be a free agent in January, on several previous occasions and last month McCarthy said that “about 100 scouts” were keeping tabs on the right-sided wideman.

Town have also been linked with Horgan’s team-mate Andy Boyle but McCarthy has played down his interest in the 25-year-old centre-half.

In October Horgan was named the PFAI Player of the Year for 2016 and he was included in Martin O’Neill’s Republic of Ireland squad for the first time earlier this month along with Boyle but without winning a cap.

Dundalk recently confirmed their third successive Airtricity League Premier Division title and have impressed in Europe this season.

The Galway-born wideman started his career with Salthill Devon before moving on to Sligo Rovers, Cork City, initially on loan, and then his current club in 2013, having spent time on trial at Barnsley and Torquay United.

Previously capped by Ireland at U19 and U21 levels, Everton, Newcastle United, Aston Villa, Reading and Preston North End are among the other clubs previously reported to be keeping an eye on Horgan.

While with Dundalk Horgan has also carried off the 2015 FAI Cup, the 2014 League of Ireland Cup and the 2015 President’s Cup.

He was named the PFAI Young Player of the Year in 2014 and was selected in the PFAI Premier Division Team of the Year in 2013, 2014 and 2015.

AZ, Town’s 1981 UEFA Cup final opponents, need to win tonight’s match, which is being played at Tallaght in Dublin, to stand a chance of progressing to the knockout stages, while a victory would put Dundalk in a strong position to go through.

Is he concentrating on the ball in that picture, or is his facial expression because someone has just said to him that he could be in with a chance of a move to Ipswich?

As much as I would love him, he's never going to get in the team when Mick never changes it unless it's through injuries.

SO fed up!!

So why is Mick bothering to go to Ireland again - Signed a super fast winger in Dylan Connelly last season but then proceeded to ruined him and then got rid of him. Though Dylan was probably pleased as I suspect he thought he as coming to play decent football!

Jesus.....what a bunch of negative comments. You would think people would be pleased that Mick is looking at a potential free agent who has represented his country at international level. How you lot have such great insight into what we could offer him with regard wages and personal terms is beyond me!

Stand just a good a chance as anyone. Despite what we all think MM has a good reputation with players and for a Yorkshireman has good Irish 🍀 connections!

If he gets an offer from us he will join as we can and will offer him game time where as other won't. This season is a write of but if we are seriously putting in for these types of players maybe the future isn't as bleak as it would appear.

No chance of this signing as why would any player that is ambitious wants to develop would join the MM and TC dinosaur school??
Come to Town and we can turn a promising talent into an average player that are aware of their defensive duties to the detriment of any creative play!!
Stay in Ireland pal :)

Hate to be negative here but if he is getting interest from 20 other teams, we are surely way down the pecking order. Why would he choose us over anyone else?

Why!! is he better than Grant Ward? In a Mick McCarthy team you will become a bad player over night so don't sign for us matey.

He would choose us because he would play for a start and I know as much as a lot of people on here like to believe we're a little tin pot club with no ambition, the fact is we're not! We're a club with a lot of pride, an excellent history with a nice stadium! Things might not be great at the moment, the footballs crap but every club goes through a similar situation as this, I really hope things turn around and a lot of people on here would have to eat there own words! I'm sure the mick out camp would rather see us fail so they can just have a moan and go on about how they were right! Its boring back your club or quite frankly do one!

It would be worth Mick watching Alkmaar to find out how to pass a football as well. Win win

Would the muppets rather that he didn't look for possible signings that just might improve the squad? If they do so then great but if not then simply move them on.

My club is going through a tough time but losing Murphy was a real blow and replacing him was always going to be a challenge however I find the hoof ball MM out moaners depressing. I also found the Forest game tough to take but in extended spells they tried to move the ball around to feet and did so pretty well. Sure we need someone to lead the attack but our players are not all s***e as some on here make. We are simply two or three players short.

@Crawfordsboot: Not really my beef per se, and indeed some valid points in there.... somewhere.... however it's the antagonistic & overboard patronizing way you chose to deliver them that bothers me personally just a tiny little bit though:

Like the MM OUT moaners make you seriously CLINICALLY "depressed" do they??? lol

"Muppets" are they??? lol

Perhaps, but my good Sir I sincerely believe it takes an Ãœber "Muppet" -- a clearly tunnel visioned & unconditional MM loving one like yourself for instance! -- to know a "Muppet"??? lol

Bongo Blue.Have been following Town possibly longer than you have been alive, and yes they were a great club once owned firstly mainly by the Cobbolds, and subsequently by the fans (including me) which was great.

However I feel that the club has been in a slow decline since falling into Marcus Evans hands, and now the present Manager, although not saying we are a tin pot club, certainly doesn't talk the club up.
