Varney Out of Burton Game But McGoldrick Could Return at Newcastle
Monday, 17th Oct 2016 13:47

Striker Luke Varney won’t be fit enough to be in the squad for tomorrow’s home game against Burton Albion, but better news is that fellow frontman David McGoldrick is closing in on his return to the first team and will be in the U23s side at Colchester this evening with a view to being involved at Newcastle on Saturday.

Varney, who suffered a hamstring injury playing for the U23s before the international break but returned to first-team action as a sub against Huddersfield, missed out on a place in the 18 at Blackburn on Saturday and manager Mick McCarthy says he won’t be in the squad as the Brewers make their first ever trip to Portman Road.

“He’s just struggling a little bit to get back to that full fitness, so he’s not available,” McCarthy confirmed.

Regarding McGoldrick, the Blues boss is delighted that he will be back in action against the U’s, having ruptured ankle ligaments in the EFL Cup defeat to Stevenage in August.

“That’s great for him personally, first and foremost, to be back and playing in a competitive game, an 11-a-side game on the full pitch,” he added.

“We structured it when he was coming back with us so nobody could tackle him, he’s been wearing a different coloured bib so people don’t tackle him.

“He’s been getting his work-rate on the full pitch so that’s kind of protected him, but then he’s gradually got into the smaller-sided games and he’s been tackling and shooting and withstanding all of that, so now it’s the last step before we can say he’s fully fit and ready for the first-team squad.”

McCarthy says the 28-year-old Ireland international has been pencilled in for the trip to Newcastle at the weekend.

“I’m not suggesting for one minute that if he plays 60 minutes he’s going to play from the start and complete the game at Newcastle, that would be a bit too much to ask,” McCarthy continued.

“But to be involved would be brilliant because we’ve already seen in the training sessions the quality that we all know he’s got. It just reminds us sometimes, it’s lovely to see.”

Another striker, Brett Pitman, is still a little way off a return from the ankle injury he suffered at Leeds.

“He’s off his crutches, so he won’t be fit for Tuesday or Saturday but he’s now walking, he’s just got the protective boot on. He’s going to be another six weeks,” McCarthy said.

Jonny Williams made his return to action and his fourth Town debut as a sub late at Blackburn on Saturday but McCarthy says the on-loan Crystal Palace man isn’t yet ready to start.

Midfielder Luke Hyam (knee) and centre-half Tommy Smith (back) are still recovering from surgery.

Town are running a ticket promotion at the Burton game with season ticket and Silver Card holders able to buy additional tickets for £10.

PragmaticBlue. Why do people keep banging on about this great goals conceded column? We are playing the two worst full backs in this league and the only reason that statistic has been achieved is because we are playing with ten outfield defenders. As you so rightly say, the problem is at the other end and because there isn't another end.
I'm sure that you remember the old Arse side under George Graham when he apparently had his back four roped together in training. That "famous" song "one nil to the Arsenal". Well, it was always 1-0, not 0-0 or 0-1. Our clown can't even get that bit right although employing the same tactics.
And, by the way, I saw my first professional game in 1958. If what we're being expected to watch was how the game was intended to be played, it would surely never have taken off as a spectator sport
People can go on all they like about injuries, lack of funds, et al. If this arrogant Yorkshireman were given money to buy Ronaldo, Messi & Bale they'd be bench warmers because the famous threesome would always be first on the teamsheet. Old Skip and co are "proper pros" after all!

is this too much to ask for ? i would rather see us lose 4-3 and have watched a helluva game than sit through another turgid boring 0-0 or either team nick it 1-0 YAWN BLOODY YAWN

Forget Saturday(and Didz if he's fit!!!) we need 3 point Tuesday night in front of what will be our lowest crowd for years, but why so low we are playing the great "Burtolona" a great side who offer a threat from all sides of the pitch and we will have to be set up to get a 0-0 which will be a result we can only dream about against such class, good job we have Skuse,Douglas, and the skip at right back to let the opposition flow through us.

It makes me laugh when people go on about our back four being very good, keeping lots of clean sheets blah blah blah and that the problem is up top!!
Thats not the case though is it, the problem with scoring is due to the fact that MM is basically playing a back 6 which then leads to us being short in midfield, the back 6 then have nobody to pass to in midfield, so just hoof it aimlessly forward to our isolated forwards.
This tactic may work if we had Messi and Suarez as our attackers but sadly thats not the case!
Continued poor tactics and poor team selection from a poor, ignorant, arrogant, dinosaur of a manager and how anyone can back this fool is beyond me!

How will we cope without such a prolific goal threat?

http://nesn.com/2012/03/american-soccer-player-ends-fc-magdeburgs-goal-drought-t

It's been just over 500 minutes since we last scored a goal. Magdeburg protested for 2 games prior to their embarrassing "arrows incident" in 2012 (at 410 minutes they simply thought enough was enough). I have now personally witnessed over 1580 minutes without us scoring a goal.

The real issue I have with this is that we could clearly see this was going to happen. Selling Murphy so close to the deadline without replacement was a hugely negative move as our style of play (aptly named hoofball) relied on him as a key component. Since we lost Murphy, we have occasionally tried to pass the ball but with extremely limited success as is demonstrated by our goal tally.

Playing a back 6 game after game isn't the answer, and I wish Mick would wake up and realise that. Stubbornness isn't helping. And like others have said, we are DESPERATE for a target man. Are we really going to wait till January?

I am optimistic that we will end our goal drought against Burton and get the 3 points, but I do feel we are in for a rocky road ahead. A relegation Battle is a real possibility.

Guentchev, nothing against you my friend, but please don't turn up at PR tomorrow night! Hard to see where the goals are coming from (without stating the bleeding obvious) with no creativity and no goal scoring pedigree in the starting XI. Make no mistake Burton players will be up for it at a ground like PR. Dangerous little banana skin for us tomorrow. Ironically we're probably more likely to mug Newcastle away with no pressure on us than get anything from Burton. I've got to be honest.... I could do with a lift!

I don't normally respond to specific posters but come on PragmaticBlue....am not far off your 50 years but I have never seen anything like this before.

Duncan had poor players and not much of a plan....but at least he never made ridiculous claims about his players.

Chambers is a terrible RB. I watch him from close up and more than anything I keep thinking this clearly decent man just isn't enjoying his football. Struggles for position, pace and ends up relying on guile to save him. By contrast Josh plays the role with confidence and has time and the legs to get forward and overlap.

Only reason Chambers gets away with it is cos we play a flat-ish back 6. Even I could hide in there at my age.

Right now Mick is his own worst enemy. The majority of supporters cannot be wrong and even if they are, they have the right to voice their displeasure at the appalling quality on show. So please wake up to reality and then give Mick a nudge before it's too late.

Can I sound like the United Nations here!

How about we respect others opinions but also don't get too upset when people don't like what we say or mark us down..

Good news re Didzy - get him back asap & fingers crossed he stays fit. Johnny must be a starter as well when fit.

Now if anyone marks me down I'll have the right hump!!

COYB!
