Newcastle-Bound Murphy Not in Town Squad
Saturday, 27th Aug 2016 14:08

Town striker Daryl Murphy is not in the Blues’ 18 for today’s home game against Preston with the Irishman understood to have travelled to Newcastle for talks regarding his move to the Magpies and to undergo a medical. TWTD revealed that the North-East club were closing in on signing the 33-year-old yesterday evening.

The clubs are believed to have agreed a fee believed to be around £3.5 million. According to some reports the striker handed in a transfer request.

Murphy is replaced in today’s side by Brett Pitman, while Tommy Smith comes back in for Adam Webster, who drops to the bench.

Town: Bialkowski, Chambers (c), Smith, Berra, Knudsen, Skuse, Douglas, Bru, Ward, Sears, Pitman. Subs: Gerken, Webster, Kenlock, Digby, Bishop, Varney, Dozzell.

Preston: Lindegaard, Humphrey, Clarke, Wright, Cunningham, Spurr, Welsh, Gallagher, Johnson, Robinson and Beckford. Subs: Maxwell, Huntington, Grimshaw, Browne, Doyle, Hugill, Makienok.

£3.5m for a 33-year-old whom, with all due respect, is past his best? Good business I think, but only if the entire fee is re-invested in a replacement or two. I have my doubts as to whether this will happen.

All the best Daryl, you've been a great servant to the club and you will always be remembered for you brilliant contribution in the 2014/15 season.

As others have stated, he doesn't want to be at the club anymore so it's a fair decision to sell him. We do need to reinvest the money and have 4 days.

Can't blame wanting to leave a mid table at best team to promotion favourites at least he will get to experience promotion at 33.

Webster dropped and Douglas squeezed back in full on MM favourites mode.

If Murphy wants to go then so be it. He's been a great servant to us and always worked his socks off for the cause. I'm disappointed about it but more disappointed that he apparently put in a transfer request. That I wouldn't have expected. Shame really but I wish him well. He wants to go so have to let him go.
As far as smith being back in the team I personally am happy at this. I rate Smith's form as better than Berra's over last season so at the start of this one is have played Smith and Berra. After the last few games I think Websters lack of experience at this level has shown a little and Berra has seemed more solid. Webster looks good and in sure will do very well for us but has the odd mistake in him at present. The penalty he gave away at Wolves, his miss hit panicked clearance on Sunday which resulted in them hitting the post, could've been worse for us on both accounts. So I think it's right to give him a rest and let him develop and learn from more experienced players. I'm sure he'll be back in again soon. Sunday was probably the biggest game of his career so far.
I don't think we need so much defensive cover on the bench though. Let's go for it for a change! Hoping the Murphy move will see Sears return to form and the score sheet! Come on Town!!!

Apparently Freddie Sears has been doing some stretching exercises
to give us more height up front

Wonder if the money will be spent on players or Olympic tickets?

@baldman

Kemar Roofe went to Leeds Utd for £3m+. Fantastic player though, just the type we need.

Sulley KaiKai is at PR today, looks like we are signing him on loan, still need to replace Murph though and no many that play like him about. Will be an interesting couple of days

Pittman unfortunately desn't have that much to his game other than scoring where as Murphy has that physical aspect of holding the ball up for others to come into play.
No news than about an Armstrong swap as £3.5M has been bounded about? which makes me think this will be another ME exercise on keeping most othe cash!

On todays line up - nice to see Smith back, best of luck lads will be interesting to see how they play with the Murphy exodus.

Oh well don't blame Murph good luck . Need a replacement now . So all the problems with 2 left sided centre halfs and a right sided centre back at right back will now return and Webster who looks a decent player had been dropped already . MM reverted to type quickly. Not expecting much today !

Pitman will score more than Murphy this season and Best will be the poor replacement , still find it laughable that MM is playing almost the identical team that failed 2nd half of last season when he used the excuse his creative players were injured , where are Bishop and Dozzell today ?

More money into the Evans PLC coffers. I note, Ward apart, todays team is all the old crap from last season. What price a gate below 15000

£3.5m is great money for a 33 year old. If he read the steady stream of depressing sh*te written in the comments on this site no one can blame him for wanting to leave.

Could be £15 million we get for Murphy, doubt a penny will go on anyone decent. Will probably end up with a loan signing who again isn't one of us.

Do we really not have a seventh man on the bench today?

McCarthy paid a lot of money for Webster so I don't think he is unfavoured, he might be a little unfit or picked up a slight knock, we don't know.
