Newcastle Targeting Town Striker Murphy
Friday, 26th Aug 2016 17:16

Newcastle United are keen to sign Town striker Daryl Murphy before the transfer window closes on Wednesday, TWTD understands.

Murphy, 33, was first linked with the Magpies in July, reports the Irish international subsequently dismissed as speculation.

However, we understand that the North-East club are now showing strong interest in the Waterford-born frontman, who signed a two-year contract with an option for a further season with the Blues last summer.

Town would be looking for a significant fee for one of their key players, despite Murphy’s age, and would want to add a direct replacement for their number nine before Wednesday’s deadline with Championship clubs now no longer able to sign players on emergency loans.

We understand that the Blues have shown interest in taking 19-year-old Newcastle youngster Adam Armstrong on loan, however, the 5ft 8in tall striker, who scored 20 goals in 38 starts and two sub appearances while on loan in League One with Coventry last season, is not a similar player to Murphy and has played only a few minutes of football at Championship level.

Speaking yesterday Town boss Mick McCarthy said he was looking to add players with Championship experience as he feels his squad already includes a number of more youthful players.

Murphy, whose first English club was Newcastle's great rivals Sunderland, initially joined the Blues for the first of three loan spells under Roy Keane's management in 2010 before signing permanently from Celtic in the summer of 2013.

In the 2014/15 campaign he topped the Championship scoring charts with 27 goals as the Blues reached the play-offs.

Last season the 23-times-capped Republic of Ireland striker netted a more modest 10 in an injury-affected campaign and he is yet to get off the mark this season, having had what looked to be a perfectly good goal ruled out at Wolves.

In total, Murphy has scored 67 goals in 207 starts and 18 substitute appearances for Town.

As things stand at present, we understand that Murphy is in the Town squad for Saturday’s home game against Preston.

For me a no brainier...cash in ...put Sears back in his right position and get some youngsters in.....Murphy gone means the style reverts from hoofball ...........but perhaps that's why I think he won't be allowed to go COYB

If we could replace him good, chances are with the little time left in the window we probably wouldn't and that would be worrying.

Pay us a few quid and he's all yours, in my opinion : decent enough at this level but will only last another year or so ; and is the cornerstone of McCarthy's hoof-it policy - mind you, even if he's gone that won't stop our donkeys playing that way, as instructed.

Surprised Murphy has only made 18 sub appearances over the years!

In a way I'd love to see Murphy get a go at a top club, but losing him would weaken us immensely. Only if its silly money. Can't see it happening.

I so hope this doesn't happen. Without Murph up top our attacking threat is 0 and we don't look like scoring. It's all good this sell sell sell and take 3million but with what we pay out you can't replace a player like Murph by paying peanuts. The money from any sale will be pocketed again I fear and we'll be in a worse situation yet again. I hope I'm wrong but when have we ever been hopefully in the last 3 years that anything good can come of this!

Let him go as long as long as we receive £3m+ AND the owner seriously invests in a top quality replacement.
In reality Murphy great servant to the club that he is will not be playing at a high level for many more years so now may be the time to cash in.

Rendoblue. Without Murphy up front our attacking threat is 0 and we don't look like scoring. And how many goals have we scored so far, and more so how many have our strikers scored? Yes, 1. And that was a penalty.

Sell for God sake sell!!!!!he will never have a 27 goal season again.A handful on his day but a spent force now.He should of scored twice against scum ,one dragged wide the other clean through bottled it and fell over .I agree tho fee must be good and the whole amount spent on a young ,goal scoring replacement.Note goal scoring replacement. Why not a double deal take sick note Mcgoldrick with him to the toon for a modest fee.We would then need a tall strong number nine and a pacey potcher to complement him. Please tho MM don't sell unless replacement is brought in straight away .COYB

Exactly get someone up there with him don't let him go. His hold up play and the way he backs in to defenders is superb. No point relying on lead legs to play as a 1 or mcgoldsick. Yes on Sunday Murph had his chances but look at what was created compared to other weeks. Hopefully nothing comes of this and the squad is strengthened before the window closes. A striker who previously scores 27 goals a season and has teams like Newcastle interested in them is not one you want to lose whether he's currently scoring or not.

Meaning rod bellfit scored for fun so did Johnson Murphy is a brilliant hold up player , but if your thinking to play different then it would be a good deal. Imho

Still the best target man in the Championship imo and Benitez seems to agree. Even if the fee was fully reinvested who would be available that would be comparable to Murphy in terms of his style and effectiveness within the team? And with only a handful of days left to find said replacement before the window closes. A very tall order indeed

Rendoblue. He scored 27 goals in one season. The only season in 17 years as a professional footballer he's scored 20 goals plus. A one season wonder maybe? Nothing against him and will support him unconditionally while he's here but if anything over £1.5 million is offered I'd snap their hands off. Of course that would be on the presumption we'd bring in a replacement. And if that player was to be Best then so be it. Could sign him on season long contract. If he not doing the business come Jan then get some1 else in then

As much as I love Murphy, I think that a cash plus Armstrong loan deal that enabled us to also get a younger Murphy style player would really kill two birds with one stone.

The kinks/ rendoblue. Clearly neither of u were at Brentford 2 weeks ago. He was awful. Couldnt hold the ball up, made no challenge for the ball in the air, didn t move for balls played more than a couple of feet from him. Yes, in his day, he holds the ball up well but that doesn't win u games. His job is to score goals, and plenty of them. Can't see that happening. Love him to prove me wrong but frankly can't see it happening

If we get say £3million, would be a good deal IF we were to reinvest it. Chances are we wouldn't
2

Superfrans added 21:00 - Aug 26
Sell him for £5m, take Armstrong on a free, sign Leon Best and keep the profit for January transfers. Easy.

Bradley dack!!! Any thoughts anyone? Don't wanna lose Murphy but reality is time is against him do I think he loves the town, that's a yes I think he's a good player for us and hope in time will coach our youth team in some capacity! Great servant to this club so let's not all be be to quick to push him out of the door why can't we keep and have faith in him and buy another centre forward?!

VulpineBlue added 21:15 - Aug 26
When Benitez comes knocking for one of your players he must have class. Who else in our squad is being sounded out? Freddie? Pitman? I don't think so. Yes Murph is 33 but his a player for the here and now. We need that as much as we need the future.
If we sell, where is the evidence that ME will re-invest? I still feel that the sales of Mings and Cresswell were asset strips rather being steps forward. I would get the same whiff were this to happen.
