Development Squad to Play at U23 Level
Thursday, 11th Aug 2016 17:28

Town’s development squad will be playing U23 rather than U21 football in the season ahead with the Professional Development League Two switching age group.

As in previous years clubs will be able to name three overage players and an overage keeper in their matchday squads.

Town’s U23s, now coached by Gerard Nash (pictured) following Mark Kennedy’s departure to coach Manchester City’s U15s, get their Professional Development League Two South season under way with a game against their Sheffield United counterparts at Stocksbridge Park Steels’ Look Local Stadium next Monday (KO 1pm). They face Birmingham in their first home game a week later.

The full fixture list can be found here, although as ever it is likely to be subject to amendments as the season progresses.

The Blues’ U18s, who are now coached by Alan Lee and Chris Hogg, have had their opening match of the season against Barnsley, initially scheduled for Saturday, moved to Saturday 24th September.

Perhaps they could just re-name this team the "Reserves" or something like that. Crazy idea, I know ;-)

I remember being at high school and laughing at Italian football for not having a proper reserve league and for clubs sacking managers after just a few months - that was twenty years ago. Strange how football changes.

Its it great how many ex town players are involved in our set up. Nash had some nasty injuries if i recall, so to see him still part of town is great.

Yes Mutters - I think I saw Nash's only first team game for Town. He came on as sub with 10 minutes to go when we were beating Burnley 6-0. He then got 2 cruciate injuries.

Bonkers, as MM would say. Particularly jarring I imagine for a few of the trialists we had in that Mick said he wouldn't sign due to them only having a year in the U21, when now infact it would have been 3 years! I was at the U21 game when that Morphew lad from Needham played and he really did look like someone we should take a chance with. Hopefully this may signal MM finding some more non-league gems!

Wonder if they can still have 3 over age players?

Great to get the fixture list. Looks like they're no longer listed on the ITFC website.
