McCarthy: Allardyce Gets the Best Out of People
Saturday, 16th Jul 2016 06:00

Town boss Mick McCarthy is delighted to see his friends and contemporaries Sam Allardyce and Steve Bruce in the running for the England manager's job vacated by Roy Hodgson, who resigned following the embarrassing Euro 2016 exit at the hands of Iceland.

Sunderland boss Allardyce, 61, is the only candidate to have spoken to the FA’s three-man selection panel - Martin Glenn, David Gill and Dan Ashworth - while Bruce, 55, has been linked but with Hull City yet to be asked for permission to talk to their manager.

“I’m delighted for them,” former Republic of Ireland boss McCarthy said. “Somebody has just got the prime minister’s job who just gets the job done. As she keeps saying, she just gets on with it and gets it done.

“That’s a bit like Sam and Steve and a few more of us that are much maligned I think at times in these supposed modern and different days, the way people speak differently about it.

“Sam’s just been excellent, I think. I don’t know how many things he’s won. Promotions, stays in the league. He gets the best out of people.

“Somebody wants to write a CV for him. What’s his CV? He gets players for not a lot, he gets the best out of them and generally they get promoted, stay up or upset the apple cart with everybody else. He just gets the best out of people. Surely that’s got to be the remit of any manager.”

He added: “They’ve tried numerous other options, haven’t they and gone away from [them]. Sometimes Sam has been tagged with the long ball and how he plays. But for me it’s about winning games.

“I’d imagine that the better players Sam’s got the better football he’ll play. And if he can get the best out of them, why not? The same applies to Brucey as well.”

I still chuckle every time i remember Big Sam's disgruntled outburst after our play off semi final victory against Bolton.

His team tried to clatter us off the park and Magilton was having none of it.

Happy times!

Great. But where are we with strengthening our weak squad?

MM is chasing ME up the back 9.

Two bogies and a golden eagle and we may get an update.

Mick says"Sometimes Sam has been tagged with the long ball, and how he plays;but for me its about winning games."

It is so predictable Mick backing his mates, with Sam especially from the same mould;which is why he was sacked by West Ham.

Wouldn't expect him to plump for Eddie Howe, who I would prefer.

Micks attitude and style is why Ipswich are still advertising the 'Early Bird'scheme for season tickets.Never happened before so late in pre season.

Typical of the FA's ambition in Sam being in the frame - the game has left many behind McCarthy, Allardyce, Hodgson etc;in recent times.

None of these have what it takes to win at world level anymore - one or more of which never did have it... !

Fifty years since we won the World Cup - almost certainly never to be repeated, certainly not with these type of people at the helm. We would come up against far too many Iceland's.

No doubt some ITFC would even trawl excuses for the recent garbage - I'm sure it's not beyond them.

Over to you essex57 and your band of merry people.

I would not let him take over at England. He kept Sunderland up but so have Dick Advocaat, Paolo Di Canio and Gus Poyet in recent years.

He made us play mediocre, long ball football at Newcastle United and we lost to a very poor Derby team who got 4 points out of us that season in the 12 they amassed for the whole of 2007/2008.

I would rather see Jurgen Klinsmann or Terry Venables and Eddie Howe in charge than Sam Allardyce.

Remember the play off semis we had with Bolton in the late 90s one team playing good football on the ground the other playing hoofball and attempting to hack us off the park, i know what i prefer to watch and its not provided by the Mccarthy and Allardyce style of play and management

Doesn't matter who gets the England job - we will still be awful because the players are no where near good enough. Of course they look good in the Premiership because they are surrounded by quality foreigners. Put them all together however the result was seen in the Euros.
