Town Targeting Charlton Winger
Friday, 24th Jun 2016 09:22

Town are reported to be showing interest in Charlton Athletic winger Callum Harriott.

According to the South London Press, the Blues are set to try to tempt the Addicks with an offer for the 22-year-old, who newly-promoted Barnsley made a low six-figure bid for earlier in the summer.

Charlton, relegated to League One in May, are said to be keen to hold on to Harriott, who recently extended his contract until the summer of 2017, having turned down an offer from Wigan Athletic last year.

Norbury-born Harriott came through the youth system at The Valley, joining their academy at U9 level, and has won three England U19 caps.

The 5ft 5in tall left-sided wideman spent the first half of the season on loan at Colchester United in League One, making 22 starts and one sub appearance, scoring seven goals. Harriott has made 62 starts and 33 sub appearances for the Addicks, scoring 12 goals.

Speaking in May, manager Mick McCarthy said adding wingers to his squad is a priority this summer.

“The wide areas are an issue for us," he admitted. "We have lost Tabby [Jay Tabb]. Ainsley [Maitland-Niles] has gone back to Arsenal and obviously Ryan [Fraser] is back with Bournemouth so we need to look at that.

“Goals from midfield have been a problem for us over the last two or three years but we looked to have got on top of that with Ryan, who certainly contributed in that area. He was a real loss for us."

McCarthy had hoped to add former loaned Liam Feeney to his squad on a permanent basis but, having agreed a deal with the Blues, the 29-year-old was offered very significantly better terms by another club, believed to be Blackburn Rovers.

Burst onto the scene as a teenager and then drifted in and out of the Charlton team. On loan in League One last year. Hmmmm..

Like this,

People have questioned why Mick has been engaged in a constant search for wingers, it's because that's how he like to play. For those are interested in style over substance (personally I just want to win games) wingers are the most important players in the team because if Mick can find a decent one for each side AND they stay fit it might mean a less direct style of play.

Wingers are a staple of all Micks previous teams, he likes them pacy, able to be beat a man and able to deliver a decent ball into the box for the likes of Murphy and Pitman to get on the off.

Sadly so far (as is traditional at town) ours have been either injury prone (Fraser and a lesser extent Stewart), lazy (JET, Stewart) or not really wingers (Tabb, AMN who will be but is still developing.

Ando was decent but to workmanlike even for MM as a long term option and Tabb was never a winger in any sense, more a footballer with enough nouse to adapt to most positions.

If we can get 2 wingers who can cross properly with pace we might well see a much quicker and more attractive counter attacking style.

So bring on the next Luca Chiveli or Ulrich Le Pen!

Would be a great signing. Really highly regarded at Charlton - would be a massive loss at the valley though. I can't imagine town are the only team interested in signing him.

We owe them one for stealing Matt Holland and Hermann Hreidarsson on the cheap.

Signing Ademola Lookman too would be a dream... But I think just a dream when he's been touted by Charlton to cost over £5m and Premier League clubs are supposedly vying for him 😂

Charlton do have some decent players tbf! Gudmonsson is class and would improve us too! he is performing well at the Euros for Iceland too!

Uninspiring, but at least he's young, cheap, and has potential. A preferable signing when compared to some of the old timers that previously signed.

IMWT!

From a Charlton fan I know -

He's enthusiastic, works hard and I think has been our player of the year for 2 straight years. Not the most talented player, but will work hard for you.

Sounds like he is an out and out winger. Has he the stomach to do the dirty work?
Can he cross the ball?

Anyone know?

Gudmonsson is another one showing his class at teh euros but I think he may be out of reach if he carries on

Wingers - yes - MM has been trying - Got Connolly who went back last season

I am hoping we find another Jarvis type

5'5 Tabb , Fraser and now him - if he is half the player of Fraser ( but fit) happy days

He impressed me when we played Charlton at Portman Road
Definitely the one to go for and a much better prospect than Feeney
Lets hope we make a positive approach and not drag our heels on this one!
