Right Response from Maitland-Niles
Wednesday, 27th Jan 2016 06:00

Town boss Mick McCarthy says Ainsley Maitland-Niles’s performance and goal were amongst the few highlights from last week’s 2-1 FA Cup third round replay defeat at Portsmouth. The on-loan Arsenal youngster curled home his second goal since joining the Blues in the summer in the 60th minute.

“I’m sure he was delighted with his goal,” McCarthy said. “He’s done really well for us, Ainsley. But he lost his slot because Freddie and Ryan have been playing exceptionally well.

“But that’s the response you want, I thought he played well the other night. Certainly in the second half he played very well and got his goal.”

The Town boss has been pleased with the England U19 international’s season so far, particularly as he'd made only three senior sub appearances for the Gunners before his loan move to Portman Road.

Since making his Blues debut on the opening day of the season at Brentford, the Londoner has made 20 starts and five sub appearances.

“He’s only 18, he’s never done this, 46 games in the Championship,” McCarthy added. “He’s a good player, he’s played well for us.”

Not sure what sort of money Arsenal would want for AMN, but i'd love him to become a permanent signing.
I think he'd be even better if we played a bit more 'football'

I don't see his role to be completely honest. Doesn't look an out and out winger. Unless we're going to give him a free role and get him in shooting positions all the time I don't see him being that useful. He can do that against Portsmouth, and how many times this season have we seen him in that position with a chance to shoot, a handful?

We don't play to his strengths, so we won't see the best of him....only in glimpses which is a real shame.

I get the idea MM thinks he's played well. Soon be different class like Tabby!

Agreed. Always a bit too casual and gives the ball away far too often. Obviously still young and got a lot of talent but I don't think he's quite good enough for a 'top 6' Championship side yet.

Totally agree with SirBob. If we played attractive football or even counter attacking football, we would see an even better player than what we see at the minute. Has so much pace, but lumping the ball over the top without any sort of purpose, we won't see it. So frustrating...

Championship football doesn't seem to be his cup of tea. Say everything goes to plan and we go up (I still think this is a possibility unlike most of you pessimistic weirdos) and we get him back on loan or get him for a good price, I reckon he'd really show his class. Give him a free role up against a premier league club and I reckon he'd be as mick would say another class.

When he first came here he was described on this site as someone who can play anywhere across the middle but Mick has only ever played him on the flank. I would love to see us a Portman Road playing him, Fraser and Freddie all in the same team. Maybe 4231 with those 3 behind Murphy ?

Mick has many strengths, but he's just too cautious for me. And I think he's just too long in the tooth now to change. Top six maybe, but not higher, unless something radical happens.

I seem to remember reading somewhere < cannot remember !! that AMN and Teddy Bishop had a great understanding in pre season training and were really linking up well
He has alot of talent ....
Imagine , if you can a team with Fraser , Bishop , Mcgoldrick , Sears and him in it !!!
Fantasy Football , I know , but be nice to see it

I like AMN but don't forget he's come from a passing doctrine at Arsenal. I think overall he's done really well, played 20 + games for us which for an 18 year old is a lot of games and probably accounts for his inconsistency at times. The first Pompey game was his worst game for us.
I agree with some of the comments though get him playing with the likes of Bishop, Fraser and McGoldrick would be awesome.
Lets hope we sign a creative midfielder during the transfer window. If we have genuine aspirations to compete in the top 6 it's a must!!

Play him in the centre in place of Douglas that's where he belongs. Mind you we'd all die of shock if we had an attacking central midfield player on the pitch actually playing in the centre.

It must be difficult for AMN at Ipswich after the passing, free flowing football that is preached at Arsenal. Our style of play doesn't really suit him, but it is an experience that will help him greatly. Unfortunately, it will be Arsenal that get the greatest benefit when he's a bit older. Wish we could find a decent winger of our own, and keep him

Reality would be another season long loan next season. Arsenal's demand for a young English footballer will be WAY out of our meagre budget unfortunately.

Very little transfer news at the moment. Disappointing given the fact that our rivals for the top 6 places are all strengthening. Saw Steve Sidwell has gone to Brighton, now that's a great player to have on the bench. Meanwhile we have Coke. It's soda pressing again.

Wonder who Mick is considering to take Douglas' place, would need to change things round a bit to accommodate AMN,who looked good when he first came from Arsenal;but dont think our Wimbledon style suits him.Sounded from a previous interview that he was considering Tabby and Toure when Oar went;but these would only be bench warmers.

I think this is one of the reasons that we lost both Parr and Oar as I notice that the Aussie's Dutch agent is now saying that they have not ruled out Europe;but have a gentlemans agreement not to stay in this country.

Hmm

Gives the ball away too many times in dangerous positions for my liking. Very light weight and gets moved off the ball too easily. Apart from that he has excellent skills. Would be better in a team playing a "ball to feet" game

phillo added 17:07 - Jan 27
The times I've seen him live he looks dangerous when he gets the ball HOWEVER we don't get the ball to him enough SO he comes inside to get it where he is less effective ..... and our width disappears. Not his fault - symptom of how we play - so as others have said don't think we are seeing the best of him tbh

blueherts added 18:00 - Jan 27
spot on phillo if I was him I would be crying some games

When he gets the ball at his feet - on the few occasions he is a good footballer - when he is trying to bring it down from 30 feet in the air - bit trickier - Fraser is different class at that
I personally would like to see AMN and Sears through the middle
Never gonna happen
