McCarthy Not Bothered Where the Points Are Won
Monday, 14th Dec 2015 06:00

Town boss Mick McCarthy says he’s not bothered where the Blues pick up their points as long as they’ve accumulated enough come the end of the season.

Having won 50 of their 78 points at Portman Road as they finished sixth in the Championship last season, the Blues - who climbed back to that final play-off spot at the weekend - have gained more away - 17 out of 31 - than they have on home turf so far during 2015/16.

“It’s nice to win at home because most of our fans are at home,” McCarthy said. “But I’m not bothered where we get them from as long as we get enough points, that’s my view.”

There were around 3,000 Town fans watching Saturday’s 1-0 away win against the MK Dons and the Town boss paid tribute to them: “They were great, brilliant support.”

The victory was Town’s third in a row on the road following the defeats of Rotherham and Charlton, the first time the Blues have managed a trio of away wins in the league since beating Derby, Crystal Palace and Barnsley in January 2009.

The last time Town won four games on the trot on their travels in the league was back in March and April 2004 when Walsall, Wimbledon, Rotherham and Gillingham were all put to the sword.

Town have the chance to match that run when they travel to Fulham on Tuesday evening.

“It’s another one we’ve got to deal with and see whether we can get some more points away from home because then we have got tough games coming up,” McCarthy added.

“I don’t like looking beyond them but we’ve got Brighton, we’ve got Burnley, we’ve got QPR. We’ve got a tough old December, but that’s a great start for us.”

Watching Saturday's game, and I fully accept we had the most chances and won the game, but did we string more than a few passes together? I know about Budget restraints and fully accept them and accept MM was done a amazing job with what he has been given but is it to much to ask to see some passing and movement instead of just kick and rush? As supporters I feel we look back at the Robson era a little to much as that is now history and due to the way the game has changed I doubt a club of our size will ever be as successful again, but I think we tend to ignore the Burley era where good attacking football was played under economic restraints which led to the most succesful period for us in the last 25 years, ok it ended badly but at least we had nearly ten years of good football

We will never get out of this league playing football the way we do and if we do we are in trouble. Football has evolved over the decades. Horrible to watch. It does not have to be played this way to be successful, even on a limited budget.

Haha ever the forum of extremes....we're going to win the league...were rubbish! Neither are true of course. When will people stop harping on about the good old days when we played one touch football and won every game 4-3 (and I was there and loved it). Times change people. Ok the MK Dons (the stolen club) wasn't a complete performance, where we swept them aside. It was still an away win that put us in the top 6. Short memories people.....Keane....Jewel...

Cloddyseedbed you should look at Tony Pulis at WBA. Better players, an improved version, but not a lot different when they went to Anfield and got the draw. Jurgen Klopp stood there at the end and outright criticised WBA for playing long ball with dead ball routines only way they scored. It is played in the Prem by WBA and Leicester albeit a better version of percentage play.

If we sit back and play like we did on Saturday then Dembele and McCormack will punish us. I appreciate we don't have much on the bench right now, but surely MM needs to freshen things up by starting DM and Fraser (if fit) and Parr in for Knudsen (who I'm trying to like but he's too lightweight and treats the ball like a hot potato). We desperately need Bru or Bishop or Fraser or DM back in the team so we have some creativity. I'm delighted that we are back in the top 6, but the brand of football we are playing right now is awful. All those on here saying "stop moaning we won".... well let's see how many points we pick up against Derby, QPR, Brighton and Burnley playing the way we did in the 2nd half against Boro and for the entire game against MK Dons.

Even if we do make the top 6 (which personally feel we won't) there's no way we'd get promoted through the play-offs other teams have generally better quality players, retain the ball and play 'deck' football.
Not sure if I agree either about Mick not being bothered where we win the points, I'd much rather be winning them against top half teams than the bottom relegation bunch, surley this is a measure if we've progressed this season?

You are better off going to Putney Bridge
which is on the District Line

You play according to getting three points. If that means playing dire defensive long ball football then so be it.

However if MM plays this type of football all of the time regardless of opposition - its his preferred style. Its all well and good if it gets you into the play-offs but don't expect the crowds to rush back or to tell stories of games past like under Burley or even Royal.

Best record in division over past 6 games (on goal difference from Boro), must be doing something right! Ok we probably not as good as top 4 (although Derby at home- we must be in with a shout) but none of the rest of the chasing pack look that great and we have made up loads of pts on struggling Burnley recently, so with Fraser/ Bru back and hopefully Oar decent let's see where then season takes us. Will anyone really complain if we're in play offs again?

...... it's all very well - but this Club has been built, over many years, on entertainment and quality play.

This now is certainly the 'flip' side of the coin - and will eventually wear thin with people who pay to sit in the stands, week in, week out.
