Update: Oar and Tabb Miss Hull Trip as Hyam and Varney Make Progress
Monday, 19th Oct 2015 16:00

Town boss Mick McCarthy has confirmed that winger Tommy Oar will miss Tuesday’s game at Hull City having suffered a concussion during Saturday’s 0-0 draw with Huddersfield, while Jay Tabb has a hamstring injury. Better news is that long-term injured pair Luke Hyam and Luke Varney are getting closer to getting back to action.

“Tommy’s going to miss out,” McCarthy said. “He was concussed on Saturday and strange as it might be, I’ve watched the game back, and he must have headed five or six balls while he’d had that.

“He got a nose bleed and it was from the impact, he didn’t get any impact on his nose, it was from the impact on his head. I felt for him.”

Oar, who was making his full Town debut, was replaced at half-time on Saturday and is the only new absentee.

“He did all right, he was struggling but he’d been almost knocked out,” McCarthy continued. “He quite clearly wasn’t knocked out because we would have taken him off but it was affecting him, there’s no doubt about that.

“It’s a shame because he’s impressed everybody since he’s been here.”

Also missing the trip to the KC Stadium is Jay Tabb, who has a hamstring problem.

Ryan Fraser is sidelined for at least two months with his knee ligament injury, Teddy Bishop is still working on his fitness after hamstring and shin splints problems, while Luke Hyam and Luke Varney, Town’s two long-term injury victims, are both making progress.

Hyam underwent knee surgery in the summer having been out of action since January, while Varney ruptured an achilles during the play-offs.

The former loanee, whose Blackburn contract was up at the end of June is set to sign a deal with the Blues once he is fit.

“I spoke to Luke Hyam this morning - and I spoke to Luke Varney as well, I speak to them every day - about his progress and he’s saying that two weeks into November he’s looking to be back, whether that’s training with us [we’ll see],” the Town boss added.

“We’ll do the same as we’ll do with Bish, we’ll put them with the U18s first and let them get back doing their football movements where they can get a bit of confidence without being bumped and barged by first-team players and hopefully they’ll both be back then in mid-November.

“That’s what they’re saying. They’re both great professionals, they’ve been amazing in terms of how they’ve done their rehab.

“The physios will tell you they’re real workhorses, they want it. You can be driven almost too much, so sometimes we’ve got to temper it with them.

“That’s why when we get to the point where they’re coming back we want to make sure they are fully prepared and fully fit.”

Substitutes: Gerken   Knudsen   Malarcyk   Skuse   Coke   Maitland-Niles   Murphy

With no fit in form wingers surely the time is now to try last season's successful 433 system. I've don't think Skuse and Douglas can play together, so for this game I'd drop Skuse as I think Douglas would cope with Diame's physicallity better. Tabb in the middle to provide the energy

Sunderland, Wolves, Republic of Ireland. ...next Ipswich? MM's career has followed similar pattern. Some small improvement then collapse. Until he goes can't waste my precious money on dross and a man who says the more they shout for someone the less likely I will play them. You've lost me McCarthy. This club is bigger than you and you old fashioned stubborn and prehistoric methods.

Hopefully it's 433 o'clock!

Sears, McGoldrick and Murphy up top! Skuse, Bru and Douglas (or Tabb) in the middle and pick any back 5 you like Mick!

3-4-1-2

Bart;
Chambers,Berra,Smith;
Parr,Bru,Skuse,Knudsen;
McGoldrick;
Sears,Murphy.

It's THE only way to fit Chambers,Berra AND Smith into that defence.

BlueKush - nearly agree with you, except that with 4-3-3 you need attacking full backs to compensate for no wingers, which means not playing Chambers at right back.

Fraser's injury actually makes it easier to play 4-3-3.
But I'd be surprised if he did that away at Hull. Forest maybe.

Has anyone actually read the article instead of assuming Tabb will play he has a hamstring injury, so that's unlikely I think against hull a 433 might be the right start with sears and didsy behind murphy and skuse and douglas behind bru screening a back 4.

Had to re read above as three on here mentioned Jay Tabb,who it says in headline is missing the trip through hamstring problem.

Agree chance to play 4-3-3 but keep it quiet in case Mick finds out lol!These bloody fans telling a Yorkshireman of my stature what to do,no think I will stick to my usual 442 and tell the boys to get back to basics ie scrapping,working hard and getting blocks in.
Might even cross halfway line a few times and string a couple of passes together in the hope of nicking a 1.0.;but would take a draw before I even got on the bus,as this team is just down from the Premiership.

I might have played the reserves against Man Utd but I will stick with the boys who I think are best over the 46 matches even if they are not playing too well.Ee by gum.

Don't think Mick is gonna change the back 4 or the goalkeeper, so I think he might play a 4-3-3 with Douglas, Skuse and Bru in the middle with Sears upfront and Murphy and mcgoldrick playing of either side of him

@muhrensleftfoot, it worked ok with Chambers there in the playoff semis, until the incident.

Bru hasn't had a kick in league since August, can't see him suddenly turning up in a 3 man midfield, and as for a back 3, - no chance at all

No surprise that Oar misses out. Concussion must be taken seriously. No disrespect to Tabby but he simply won't be missed.

Just goes to show how some fans on here are so deluded!! Tabb is injured!!!! Read the bloody story!!! Can't think of a better option than parr on the left.. Will give Knudsen some much needed help as for me he has been totally out of his depth in the past few games! Unfortunately we all know Gerken will be in goal.. chambers will be at right back.. Smith and Berra will make it an unbalanced central pairing and Knudsen left back.. Skuse and Douglas will be the central midfield as they as been 'different class' he will freshen up the strikers like he always does to no real impact as they are getting bugger all service from the midfield! I hate to be negative but after that performance Saturday it is very hard to see a future! We even seem to have lost the fantastic team spirit of last season too! The paying public deserve to see our strongest side! I'll finish on a positive note.. We could be Leeds Utd!!

Oar looked quality until he got smashed by the keeper - yellow card min - but was still one of the better players until HT. Looking forward to seeing him make a swift return..

Just imagine, a midfield four of Tabb, Skuse, Douglas, Hyam. A true cure for insomnia

Mick is boring and predictable it'll be this
Gerken
Chambers Berra Smith Knusden
Toure Skuse Douglas AMN
Sears Mcgoldrick

Later in the game another striker will come on and sears will go on the wing, probably Murphy for Toure or AMN.

I don't think Oar was the only Ipswich player concussed on Saturday.
