Blanchfield Travels to Preston
Friday, 21st Aug 2015 13:28

Academy midfielder James Blanchfield is travelling with the first-team squad to Preston ahead of Saturday’s game at Deepdale.

It’s the first time the 17-year-old central midfielder has been involved with the senior squad, who are flying to the North-West today.

Essex-based Blanchfield joined the Town Academy last summer - having had a spell on trial at Manchester United - after leaving Arsenal’s youth set-up.

Blanchfield has made the trip to gain experience of life with the first team and is not in the squad.

Is McDonnell injured?

As otherwise it seems odd for this lad to come from nowhere and push ahead of McDonnell in the squad given how highly rated Adam is. Unless it's a positive and means Blanchfield may potentially be even better.

its just experience, give the youngster a taste of what it can be like, motivation. More man management brilliance by MM

Quite possibly. If there's no chance of either being named in the 18 then why not give this lad a taste and allow it to serve as motivation for him to really push on. As you say potentially another astute move by Sir Mick.

No bad thing, but demonstrates again how after just a couple of injuries we look short in some key areas. Defence and attack minded midfielders. Coke, Skuse and Douglas are defensive players, so essentially we have no attack minded central midfield players available. I'm sure Mick will address it, probably with a loan.

Under Keane and Jewell the youth system seemed to be pretty redundant or surplus to requirements. Now I think its great that we have young players knocking on the first team door. Experienced midfielders like Douglas, Tabb, Skuse and Coke should be excellent role models for these younger players.

And at the end of the day whats the point in having a youth system if they are not going to be given a chance.

I just wish that when I was younger TC and Klug were around to help me develop my skills - instead I became a Sunday League donkey.

Team is flying up, wouldn't be surprised if it's chartered. In which case they've prob got spare seats to fill on the plane. Even if there's no chance of them playing, this is a taste the glamour of first-team football. The kids will return inspired & motivated.

Happy to hear we are supporting our youngsters. Other youngsters from other clubs will see that there is a clear line of progression at ITFC.

Don't understand why McDonnell is not with the squad. Excellent reviews from the training ground and we've been waiting for his clearance to play for ages.
