Stoke-on-Trent-born Griffiths was raised in Australia and played youth football with ECU Joondalup but returned to England to join Blackburn in 2006, having had trials with Town amongst others as a 14-year-old.
While with Rovers Griffiths spent time on loan at Gretna and Accrington Stanley (as pictured above) before leaving Ewood Park in February 2009 without having made a senior appearance for his parent club.
He returned to Australia and joined Adelaide United, then had spells with North Queensland Fury and Central Coast Mariners.
In 2012 Guangzhou R&F paid $1.3 million for the 6ft 2in tall defensive midfielder, which is still an A-League record fee. After two years in China he joined Perth Glory.
Griffiths, whose younger brother Brent plays for Central Coast Mariners, was capped by Australia at U17 level but also qualifies for Wales through a grandparent.
Meanwhile, the Blues continue to be linked with a loan move for Liverpool left-back Brad Smith. The Australian international was previously mentioned in connection with a move to Town earlier in the week.
The Blues are also being linked with a loan move for another so far unnamed Arsenal youngster by the Arsenal Youth website. Town recently signed 17-year-old Ainsley Maitland-Niles on a season-long loan.
Released midfielder Paul Anderson has turned down a contract with Charlton and, as previously reported, Wigan Athletic are currently the favourites for the 27-year-old’s signature.
League One Southend United face opposition from Chicago Fire for Noel Hunt's signature, the MLS side having reportedly offered the Irishman a three-year deal.
Elsewhere, Academy scholar Monty Patterson and the New Zealand U23 side missed out on their place in today’s final at the Pacific Games having been thrown out of the tournament - whose winners qualify for the 2016 Rio Olympics - for fielding an ineligible player.
Following their 2-0 defeat to New Zealand in Friday’s semi-final, Vanuatu protested that South African-born defender Deklan Wynne was ineligible, a complaint which was upheld by the Oceania Football Confederation.
New Zealand Football say they will be challenging the decision. Patterson, 18, scored a goal in each of his three games in the competition.

Really!? 8million sat in the bank and we're scavaging in the bottom of the bargain bin in Poundland. If he signs and becomes a great town player I will happily stand corrected.
If we are looking at bringing in a midfielder, with Crystal Palace having confirmed the signing of Cabaye; that has to have a big impact on Jonny Williams' potential for game time there. Maybe now is the time for a cheeky bid of £2m to test the waters (pending a medical)? Another available midfielder of note is Swansea's Leon Britain. I thought he was exceptional 2 or 3 years ago, but after injury hasn't gotten back into a decent side who have spent a lot of money. Could be a really shrewd signing. My final midfield suggestion is Giles Barnes, who seems to have gotten over all his injury problems & has been in excellent form for Houston Dynamos for the last 12 months. About 5 years ago he was linked with many of the top Premiership clubs & is still in his mid-20s. We need a creative midfielder with that level of quality if we are to win promotion this coming season. McGoldrick is an option & could certainly do a job (if fit & motivated in that role), but ultimately it would just be another example of playing Chambers at right back, when what is required is an actual right back.
Always worth looking at players, but we need goals in that midfield.
Simply can't understand our policy of loads of loans. Two is enough for the time being, with perhaps a couple emergency loans much later to top squad up. We should be thinking future and loans are not the way forward. Signings like Pitman are.
No harm in him having a trial. Clearly the scouts have seem something in him they like. Bru turned out to be an unearthed gem so this fella could well turn out to be the same. Disappointed to see us linked with yet more loan moves. We need to build a squad of our own players not fill it with hired hands.
I agree completely. Jonny it is I think. I can't think of another midfielder we would bid 7 figures for. We have seen him at first hand at the club, know his character and what he brings to the team. The Cabaye signing should be the end for him at Crystal Palace anyway.
With the exception of Cam Stewart and Bajner, i think MM has done quite well in the transfer market so i trust his decision making on players to bring in. Just because town made £8m from the Mings deal doesn't mean MM should go out and spend it or waste it on big fees/wages as other managers have done or would do. George Burley did quite well when the club were skint, as soon as he had some money to spend he wasted it on Sereni, George and La Pen to name a few so its not about how much you spend, it just has to be the right player regardless of how much they cost! Mings cost £10k but went for £8m so shopping in the so called "bargain basement" is not necessarily a bad thing because as we know, gems can be found!
Jas0999 agree with you, 2 loans is enough to start the season with. Would be very surprised if Williams turned out to be our big summer signing, for many reasons.
Why do people think Williams is coming its not happening he has like 4 years left on contract and no way we would match half his wages so better u just forget about it
Just wondering with so many being so critical to loans: What is the difference really between having players here for a seasonlong loan - with no recallclause as it is - and having McGoldrick here for another 12 months and then leaving for nothing..? As for Griffiths, no harm in looking at him. If he is good, sign him, if not, then nothing lost.
There's no harm in taking a look at Griffiths and players like him, and perhaps Hyam being out for a while gives him more of a chance of earning some sort of contract.
As for Williams, his injury record would put be off making a big bid, and after all we do have Bishop who is a similar sort of player in many ways.
Agree with Mark we have Bishop and Dids who can do the same role as Williams and for me they offer more . Kevin Mcdonald from Wolves I would go for to challenge Skuse , good passer and playmaker who also breaks up play
Seems still being quoted as interested in the 'bargain basement'rather than paying money. Agree Mick has done very well in this department;but it was not good enough in the end,and surely he could try and get the odd player that is still under contract, even though it would mean paying some money,to help us over the line?
The club seems to be behaving like it was still in administration rather than having a wealthy benefactor, and please don't quote FFP,as Mr Evans has received nearly £12m from the sale of 2 left backs and hardly spent anything in fees. Also with a small squad too ,and paying less than a lot in this division,ie Leeds payment to Stewart of £800k difference on 3 yr contract, then like JAS cant understand them being quite so frugal!
Lets hope there is some mileage in the rumour of the 7 figure bid;but like all this pre-season transfer hype, must be taken with a pinch of(sea) salt.
the main prob with loans is as long as they are not for key postions like boro last season relting on 2 season loan strikers come the end of the season they had kike that was it now have to build up front which will take time. a midfield loan from arsenal would suit me as the do have some good midfield players in their system, for example if it was alex Prichard or delle ali we would be be going nice but no more than 3 long term loan player so I think the LB wont be coming
Transfer fees just blindfold us into thinking that if they are not paid then the players sale profits aren't being used.Wages and agents fees sadly swallow up what would have been paid as a transfer instead.
Also ME stumps up 5m+ each and every season in subsidy to our losses.
ME is a man of his word. I have met him and he delivered all that he promised to me within 7 days and on budget.
