Stewart Stays Behind
Thursday, 9th Jul 2015 11:41

Winger Cameron Stewart has been left out of the 22-man Town squad which is spending the week training at the Carton House Hotel in Co Kildare.

Manager Mick McCarthy and his squad, including a number of youngsters, made the trip to Ireland for their annual training camp on Monday and face Dublin side Shelbourne in their first pre-season friendly at Tolka Park on Saturday (KO 3pm).

As in previous years, McCarthy is expected to field a different XI in each half against what's likely to be largely an U19s Shels side.

Since the squad left, Stewart has posted a photo of himself on social media in London with his former Manchester United team-mate Danny Welbeck.

The 24-year-old was back at Playford Road last week having had a disappointing first season with the Blues, after joining on a free transfer from Hull City last summer.

After a proposed move to Leeds, which could yet lead to a transfer embargo for the Whites, broke down, the Mancunian wideman signed a three-year deal at Portman Road.

However, having broken his jaw late in pre-season, Stewart was unable to win a place in the Town side and his only Blues appearances to date are the two sub appearances in the FA Cup ties against Southampton. Late in the season he joined Barnsley on loan.

Speaking last week, manager Mick McCarthy wasn’t entirely ruling him out of his plans - "He’s got to get his nose down and see if he can get in the team, see if he can get in the squad first” - but with loan wingers Ryan Fraser and Ainsley Maitland-Niles joining the likes of Jay Tabb, Dylan Connolly and Alex Henshall in the squad - and all travelling to Ireland - it would be little surprise if the former England U17, U19 and U20 international was off-loaded before the start of the season.

Stewart could be involved with the U21 squad which plays a friendly at Leiston on Saturday (KO 3pm).

Meanwhile, Noel Hunt, 32, released by the Blues at the end of last season, has also remained in Suffolk and has spent the week training with the Blues youngsters at Playford Road.

Hunt was offered the chance to get himself fit with Town by manager Mick McCarthy while he searches for a new club.

The country's full of players who were 'nearly good enough'. He will fade away like all the others.

Looks like Stewart's career is being 'left behind' - since Hull got rid of him he's basically achieved very little, why Mick was interested in him I'm not really sure, he'll be out on loan very shortly (and we all know what that means further down the road). Still need to look for a wide left player.

Pity about this but was worth taking a punt on.With £800k burning a hole in his back pocket(the difference between what he would have been paid at Leeds and his money here)which is a huge amount,no wonder he isn't a hungry player.

Though doubtful, could still come thru, even if not on tour;but sounds as though doesn't have the right attitude aka Taylor, however Bluefeast would think we should be able to get a bit for him,and certainly wouldn't pay up his contract which has two years to run,as things can change quickly in football.

Look forward to seeing him at Leiston on Saturday

Timmy h. Why do we need a wide left player still? We already have henshall, connolly, miles Maitland and Tabb who can play there. Think 4 is enough, don't u?

Tabby first on the list but Stewart can stop at home and not been given a fair chance as yet

Tabby deserves to be there because he is a great professional and is committed to the cause (or at least his employers)

....... could he just want to be able to show some flair ??? ............ if he wants to show too much of that in his game - he WILL be out, sooner rather than later.

As good as gone. Can only assume he hasn't the right attitude. Only in football for the money? Shame we are tied in for 2 more years.. How did he break his jaw, does anyone know?

How does a broken jaw keep you out for a season. It has to be down to attitude and work ethic.

Loan him out to Rotherham who will suss him for what he really is. Like they did to Loach Wordsworth et al.

@blues1 - that's true but NONE of those are proven players in that position, Tabb doesn't belong out there and the others are young wannabees and so far since Mick has been here we're really waiting for a young player to blossom in the creative department as he soon seems to lose patience (maybe other than Bish). What we need is an experienced player at this level that can perform.

The sooner players of all ages realise that it's no good thinking you are good, you have to prove it week in and week out to be a successful professional footballer with ITFC. At last we have a manager that dosen't suffer fools gladly for long. Shame this one was ever signed as he has an attitude problem.

Obviously a problem child, Robson would put an arm around them and try to nurture them, Mick takes no bull, which is laudable. Shape up or ship out Stewart you aren't anybody yet lad grow up!!!!

Needs to go somewhere tough for 3 months and come back desperate to play in January.
Would suggest Welling Utd (12 red cards and numerous yellow cards last season) or Braintree Town (539 fouls given last season). These teams would kick Stewart into gear. Seriously, a tough time will make a man of him and he could become a Star.
