Newcastle Make Mings Enquiry Claims
Thursday, 18th Jun 2015 09:14

Newcastle United have reportedly made an enquiry regarding Blues left-back Tyrone Mings.

According to the Northern Echo, one of a couple of North-East papers running the story, the Magpies, now managed by Steve McClaren, were quoted an initial fee of £8 million for the 22-year-old with Town said to want an overall deal worth £10 million once further clauses were taken into account.

The Blues have long been understood to be targeting an eight-figure fee for the highly-rated full-back.

Newcastle were amongst the Premier League clubs regularly represented at Portman Road last season to keep tabs on Mings and were claimed to have made an unsuccessful £4 million bid for the ex-Chippenham man in January.

At the weekend, West Brom were reported to be showing interest, while the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea and most of the rest of the Premier League have also been mentioned in connection with Mings at some stage over the last year or so, the Blues having turned down a £3.5 million offer from Crystal Palace last summer.

In September last year Mings, who cost the Blues £10,000 when he was signed from the Evo-Stick League Chippenham in December 2012, signed a contract which runs to the summer of 2017.

Elsewhere, former Blues winger Gary Roberts, 31, has joined Portsmouth from Chesterfield, signing a three-year deal.

It is inevitable that he will go. He's no real loyalty to the club and the cash injection will give MM a boost for the coming campaign.

I'm happy to see him go so long as the deal is sufficiently lucrative for us.

I'm more than happy with Parr, who would get into pretty much any Championship team.

He needs another season in the Championship with regular first team football. But as we know, this is all very well in theory when big money is on the table.

I'm afraid I'm fearing the worst. We simply can't afford to reject a bid in that region. Nor should we stand in Mings way. However, unlike the Cresswell money which was apparently spent on just wages, I would expect Evans to free up the vast majority of the cash for not only wages by reasonable fees for new, attack minded players. Quality signings. Yes, there are also some good frees around, but a decent goal scoring midfielder will cost money in terms of a fee.

I heard Arsenal renewed their interest in him yesterday as well..

He's really not very good, so if a Premiership club is happy to give us a few million for him let's hope we let them.

Happy to take £8m if MM is allowed to reinvest in players. I was disappointed with Mings in the 2nd half of the season and he started making a few errors and not playing with much desire. His error that led to Berra's red card is a prime example of his sloppy play. Creswell was a better player for us.

he has the potential to be good but having potential is one thing living up to its another from what I saw in the second half of the season with mings he had more bad days than good and anyone scouting him couldn't honestly say he would be worth between 8 and 10 million but I would take that right now as long as we don't lose anyone else

Obviously Daleyitfc you know far more than the people who work for Premier League clubs and have a responsibility for spending their money!

£8 million...I'd bite their hands off for that..

Will transfer fee allow purchase of new players? That's the problem need bigger squad next season can't rely on our strikers remaining free of injury all next season and need decent midfielder who can score goals.

His potential is huge which is why clubs are considering paying £8million pounds for the guy. Consistency will come with experience and I also see his long term position as a CB. I hope we keep him and he plays Premiership with us next season. We need to keep all our best players this summer and Mings is one of them.

I disagree with people saying he's not good, He has learning to do, and a young British left back with an iota of skill is a hot target in the premiership. I too would like him to stay another season but an £8m+ deal (so long as the bulk of that goes to MM) is too good to turn down.

Also have to understand a premier league team will want a good defender early in his career so they can shape him to their style early on. Defenders are a position that's easy to get set in your ways the older you get so I think his potential is whats bumping his value up.

If we can £8m that would be an awesome deal for us (as the Yanks would say). Parr is a better all round player in my eyes and definitely offers more going forwards, rather than the "Bambi on ice" approach of Mings!

Gary Roberts is only 31? Wow, I thought he was about 40...

If/When he goes, will we see more of Matt Clarke or would we bring in an established left back? Or there's always Johny Parr, but he plays everywhere.

Agree with BLUEBEAT, i was sure Gary Roberts was 40 when he was playing for us!! Skillful player, but looked a lot older than clearly he was !!

We are and always will be a selling club so if we get an offer in the region of £8m+, then it is a no brainer and we have to accept it. Hopefully the funds will be reinvested as that could be the difference between top 2 and top 6 next season.

Whether he is any good or not, I bow down to the professionals and although he did make a few mistakes last season, some costly, I accept he has massive potential to become anything he wants in the game. I just fear it wont be with us.

The cost of British players is actually getting ridiculous, if you compare him to what's out there he's is worth 5 million maximum if that. People complain about premier league clubs signing foreign players but i don't blame them, if an average young english LEFT BACK is worth '10 million' then of course they're going to go to the foreign clubs for players. Rant over!

Absolutely not for sale.

Disappointing to read so many fans prefer money to a good player in the team - we don't need to sell our best players and "revamp" the team, we just need McGoldrick to stay fit for the entire campaign. Plus Mings barely has a season under his belt and he should display loyalty considering he was working in a tie when we signed him.

He could just aswell stagnate in his career as to go on and be an england international, that would be a fantastic deal for us as we have jonny parr plus clarke in the wings. defo take 8 million.

@Infinidi - Usually I would agree with you 100%, but the condition of me saying talk the money is if MM gets to spend a large whack of it. We have seen what Mick can do with little in the way of transfer fees, I for one want to see what he can do with a few million under his belt

ArnieM added 10:39 - Jun 18
As with Cresswell all this speculation will mess with Mings head and his form will drop. Sell and on. Parr is Better left back anyway.

Infinidi added 10:41 - Jun 18
@wkj - It's not as simple as that, we'll see Mick with a budget on promotion. If we got £8 million now for example, we're still bound by our wage budget which means the likely fees we'll spend will be on lower league punts.

Or we could just keep the best leftback in the Championship (after one season) and strengthen elsewhere with frees as we've done since Mick arrived. Mings' value is only going to rise, selling highly promising players after 30 something matches is just poor.
