Murphy: Squad Full of Strong Characters Thursday, 11th Dec 2014 06:00 Camaraderie, togetherness, team spirit — no matter what you call it Town have it in abundance according to leading marksman Daryl Murphy. The 31-year-old striker said: “It’s great credit to the gaffer, TC and all the staff — they pick the players and they want the right characters to come in. Every player that has come in has settled into the squad straight away and done their bit. “Look at the impact Noel Hunt made last week. He arrived on the Thursday when he came in and trained with us. He slotted straight in, coming on for the last few minutes at Charlton, taking a bad knock, getting up and getting on with it and then scoring the winner. It just goes to show what we’re all about at the minute. “We have a strong squad full of strong characters and if players did come in who weren’t that type they wouldn’t be like it for very long. They would be told in no uncertain terms what was required from them. The gaffer’s brilliant with all that and isn’t going to bring in the wrong types. “He knows the players and the characters he wants and as you’ve seen we have a decent squad now. When there are players injured, others come in and we’re not even missing anyone because the players who come in just do the job and that’s what you need to be successful. “With the current squad we have good strength in depth. We’ve got players for every position and it doesn’t matter who gets injured or suspended, like Christophe was last week, we have someone capable of coming in and doing a job for the team — and doing it well. There is no one playing catch-up, everyone is flying fit, so we have a good squad.” Murphy paid tribute to the service that has helped him to hit 13 league goals this season, more than anyone else in the Championship and the same as his tally for the entire 2013/14 campaign, adding: “Paul Anderson brings good delivery to the team and we’ve also got Hunty [Stephen], as well and young Alex [Henshall] and Cameron [Stewart]. “We have the players that are good at taking on opponents and getting good deliveries into the box. Obviously it benefits me because it’s something to attack and we need that in the team.” Meanwhile, Murphy is hoping to extend his club form and add to his 13 senior international appearances for the Republic of Ireland as they look to book a place in the Euro 2016 finals to be hosted by France, a similar target to newly-capped Town team-mate David McGoldrick. He said: “It was great for Didzy to make his Irish international debut last month against the USA. It was a long time coming because it took a while to get the paperwork sorted but he really enjoyed it and I thought he did brilliantly in the game. “Hopefully he will get a lot more caps and the same goes for me. I hope to carry my current form on to the international stage in 2015. I just need to keep playing, keep this scoring run going and keep in the manager’s thinking, then hopefully I’ll be in future squads.”
