McGoldrick: Best is Yet to Come
Friday, 21st Nov 2014 06:00

He has attracted a huge bid from a Premier League club and made his international debut, all in the space of the last three months, but Town striker David McGoldrick is adamant the best is yet to come.

Having recovered from a double injury blow that saw him miss the final 13 games of last season, McGoldrick had no sooner started the new campaign than he was a £7 million target for Leicester in the August transfer window.

But Town rejected the proposed deal and, if anything, the player’s value has probably increased after he made an impressive international debut for the Republic of Ireland in their 4-1 victory over the USA in a friendly in Dublin earlier this week.

However, McGoldrick insisted: “You haven’t seen the best of me yet. It’s been a few months now but I feel I’m getting there. Hopefully, in the next few weeks I will be back to my best. As for the team, they are at their best and doing well, which is the main thing and something I’m really glad about.”

McGoldrick, who was initially sidelined with a knee ligament problem and then required a cartilage operation, added: “The second injury, when my cartilage came out, was the real one, if you like, because I lost a lot of muscle in my leg.

“After the operation I was a bit scared for a long time to blast the ball properly. In fact, the first time I blasted the ball properly was for my goal on the first day of the season when we beat Fulham.

“As it was played back to me I was thinking ‘Here we go’ and I was a bit worried. But luckily it went in and I gained a huge amount of confidence from that. I still get a few aches and pains in my right leg but I feel like I’m getting there. As long as the team are doing well I’m happy.

“It’s a good feeling to be near the top of the Championship and in the Republic of Ireland squad, while also knowing I can play much, much better. I have more to offer the team and once I’m doing that I think we can be right up the table.”
