Finidi George and his Nigerians bowed out of the African Nations' Cup at the semi-final stage after a disappointing performance against Senegal in a game where three players saw red cards. An extra-time goal from Diao won the day for the Senegalese after the 90 minutes had ended 1-1.

Nigeria had looked to be the favourites after Senegal's Pape Sarr was sent off for elbowing alleged Town target Garba Lawal on 34 minutes, but despite JJ Okocha hitting the post from a freekick there were few chances for Finidi's side.

A second half goal from Lens midfielder Pape Bouba Diop had put the Senegalese ahead, but a late Julius Aghahowa goal equalised and took the game into extra-time.

Town's Finidi George played wide on the right early on before moving into the centre, but was substituted on 67 as Nigeria threw on more attackers as they desperately sought an equaliser.

In extra-time it was the ten men of Senegal who went ahead in the first period of extra-time through Diao. In the second period Nigeria missing a penalty through Wilson Oruma and had two players sent off. Julius Aghahowa went for a late challenge just after the penalty and Udeze went in the last minute for an off the ball challenge.

Nigeria will now face the losers of Cameroon vs Mali (KO 7pm Eurosport) in Saturday's third/fourth place play-off (4pm, Eurosport).
