McCarthy: One of Our Best Away Displays
Wednesday, 24th Sep 2014 06:00

Manager Mick McCarthy hailed Monday’s 2-1 win at Wigan as one of the best away performances of his time in charge of the Blues. Luke Hyam and Conor Sammon were on target for Town in the live Sky game with Martyn Waghorn pulling one back late on for the Latics.

“I would say so,” McCarthy said afterwards. “Probably the best one was at Birmingham in my first game. That was a win, I’m not sure how we played but it was a well-needed victory.

“[Monday] was a really solid performance. There’ll be a lot of talk about the last 10 minutes when they’ve had a bit, but the reality is that we could have won by more.”

Town's victory at the DW Stadium - their first on their travels this season and their first ever away at Wigan - took their current run to three wins on the trot for the first time since they beat Charlton away and Blackburn and Huddersfield at home in November and December last year.

The Blues, whose starting line-up on Monday cost only the £10,000 paid to Chippenham for Tyrone Mings, last won four in a row in January and February 2012 when West Ham were thrashed 5-1 at Portman Road and then Coventry and Portsmouth were beaten away and Cardiff were vanquished at home.

Town, who are up to seventh in the Championship, will be looking to equal that streak when they face 19th-placed Rotherham United at Portman Road on Saturday, a game which McCarthy warns won’t be easy.

“The hardest game of the lot will be Rotherham at home on Saturday when everybody expects us to win. That’s sod’s law.

"But it’s a nice expectancy, it’s better than everyone expecting us to get beaten.”

On-loan Blues duo Paul Taylor and Anthony Wordsworth are ineligible against their parent club on Saturday.

Meanwhile, winger Stephen Hunt's wife Joanne gave birth to a daughter, Arabella, at Wexford Hospital on Tuesday evening.

Blueboy. We struggled because Skuse had to go off. Bishop's exit didn't help either. The subs he had to bring on were either short of experience or of match practice and yes that showed. A fit Tabb on the bench would of course have coped better. The 4-3-3 makes you bloody vulnerable when you suddenly lose 2 of the middle 3 who've been with the pace of the game throughout. But it's the 4-3-3 that had us enjoying the 2-0 lead. There's always going to be a gamble. Doesn't matter then too much if we "nearly didn't win" because we did. I've no idea really why you posted what you did, other than to just have a go. I don't see anybody on these pages saying ipswich are bloody world beaters and the best anything in the land. I just see them saying, well done. What's wrong with saying well done? Why do you expect your team to play any game without having to endure a period of pressure? I don't get you!

First of all , three wins on the trot are very welcome, but they don't turn us into champions.

Second, whilst we are on a good run, we have quite a thin squad both in terms of numbers and quality of reserves (but it was probably always thus)

Third, I would love us to spend the Cresswell money on player or two, but I fear that the owner will see what can be achieved on the present resources and say no

I noticed last season from a few write ups that was Mick's main strategy was to close the opposition down quickly in their half and force then into mistakes, although I'm not a season ticket holder (try to go to as many games as possible) that was the first time I clearly saw it in effect, a very dominant display up until 75 minutes or so. To be honest for most of that match Wigan looked quite pathetic passing wise and quite small in stature which is unusual as Ipswich has looked a bit light weight over recent years (physically) under Magilton, Keane and Jewell.

Blueboy you are making yourself look silly. We won!!. If the performances had been reversed you would be on here spouting " it's no good playing for the last fifteen minutes "
You just like the sound of your own keyboard.

While I am very happy about how things have gone recently, I'd like to sound a warning note about Rotherham. In football, things don't always go to plan. Still, Mick, if anyone, will no doubt be instilling the dangers of complacency into the team.

£3.5 m from Cresswell, 10k team, no transfer fees, Surely we can sign the Prem loan starlet MM promised us? hope our patience with Palace pays off now they're out of the cup. Or can we get a young striker that has some pace.

please do something we are the dullest team in the Championship, we.re never on the TV in the pub even when we.re on, we never get a commentary/mention on the radio and nothing written about us in the newspapers, last on the football league show every week and about 20 secs max.

Be warned: Rotherham have played well away this season from home, wouldn't surprise me at all if they get a point from the game. Mick's record against the strugglers/lower positioned teams hasn't been that great (so far).
