Town XI Win at Sudbury
Tuesday, 5th Aug 2014 22:07 by James Ager

A young Town XI recorded a 4-2 victory over AFC Sudbury at the Wardale Williams Stadium on Tuesday evening with Darren McQueen, Jack Marriott, Paul Taylor and Matt Clarke all on the scoresheet. The Blues side included trialists Patrick Antelmi and Richard Bryan.

Free agent Australian Antelmi, 20, who played on the left of midfield despite primarily being a striker, joined Wigan on an 18-month deal last December following his release by Leeds when Charlton, Blackburn and Wolves were also reportedly interested. He was released this summer and recently played for Crawley on trial.

Born in Perth, Antelmi, who is yet to make a first team appearance, was with Portsmouth’s youth set-up prior to his spell at Elland Road.

Central defender Bryan, also a 20-year-old free agent, came through Aston Villa’s academy before being released in the summer of 2012.

A Republic of Ireland international at U16, U17 and U19 levels, Bryan spent time on trial at Leeds last season.

Mark Kennedy's side took the lead after 17 minutes when Marriott forced keeper Alex Archer to produce a good save, but McQueen was quickest to react and slotted the ball home.

Within two minutes the hosts were level when Ryan Henshaw powered Lee Flynn's corner past Michael Crowe.

Marriott put Town back ahead on 56 after finding himself one-on-one with Archer, before Taylor beat a number of Sudbury players and hit a 20-yard shot into the bottom corner seven minutes later.

Within a couple of minutes, skipper Clarke had headed home the fourth from Teddy Bishop's left-sided corner.

The hosts pulled a goal back on 77 when Lawrence Yiga bundled the ball in from close range after Town had failed to deal with Flynn's free-kick.

McQueen thought he'd added another for Town late on with another precise finish, but he was flagged offside and the final whistle came soon after.

Neither Bryan or Antelmi particularly stood out during the first half in front of watching boss Mick McCarthy and his assistant Terry Connor and both were replaced at the break.

Transfer-listed Taylor looked lively but appeared to pick up a knock in the second half, while youngsters Bishop and Clarke impressed throughout.

Town XI: Crowe, Robinson, Wyatt, Bru (Willbye 72), Bryan (Sowunmi 46) Clarke, McQueen, Bishop, Marriott (Patterson 78), Taylor (Galvin 66), Antelmi (Lawrence 46). Unused: McDermid. Att: 718.

ipswichboi funny to see lee martin included in your list of bad apples mick got rid of-my recollection was mcarthy nearly always played lee martin and offered him a new deal which he turned down-whatever you though of martin he worked very hard for the team.
mick dosent like taylor because he is small and creative-he dosent like either of those things but the 2 toghether mean mick cant find a place for him in a defensive long ball system

I find it funny that we are not allowed an opinion on Taylor if it disagrees with MM but these new signings and trialists who haven't played a competitive game have made the squad stronger even though no one has seen them at championship level !!!
Loach,Cresswell,Vesali,Edwards,Taylor,Williams,SEB gone from end of last season who weren't good enough to get in playoffs replaced by Bart, Parr, Henshall,Bru,Bainer - only one proved at championship level - Squad Stronger ?

If Taylor is so good why is a 1.5M player going on a free and yet no ones interested. He's 26 and has had one decent season with Peterboro.

We thought that Taylor was one if not the best player at Sudbury. However it was only a non league team, and Paul Jewell payed massively over the odds for him.

I cannot see how some people are critical of his workrate,as its never seemed a problem to me,and again he worked hard last night up front showing a lot more running than his strike partner Marriott.

I like Mick generally speaking and believe that he may do well with us, I certainly hope so, however I will always feel disappointed by the way he has treated Paul Taylor, I believe they can both be volatile characters and would imagine that is at the route of the problem, with the Manager coming out on top always, I think people should put themselves in Paul's shoes, how would we feel if we had worked hard through pre season (acknowledged by Mick), then find that other players are being favoured in front of us, especially players that are clearly not as good, (no names), I am sad for Paul and believe he deserved better, his problems away from the club should not be held against him, it's not as though he has done anything so wicked, I would like Mick to give the lad the chance with Ipswich that his talent deserves.

Getting upset about Taylor leaving is like getting upset over Priskin leaving. He is an exspensive mistake made by an incompetent manager.
