Tottenham to Play Home Games at Portman Road?
Wednesday, 2nd Jul 2014 12:07

Tottenham Hotspur could play home games at Portman Road while their new ground is under construction, according to a report.

It's understood that the North Londoners will be unable to play at their current White Hart Lane home during the 2016/17 campaign while their new 56,000-seater stadium is completed and therefore are looking at alternative ‘home’ grounds.

Wembley, the Olympic Stadium and the MK Dons’ stadium:mk have previously been mentioned as potential alternatives and the Evening Standard reports that Portman Road and Brighton’s Amex Stadium are now also viewed as possible venues for ‘home’ matches, although it’s stressed that the plans are in their early stages.

Wembley is understood to be Spurs’ preferred choice for all their games, however, playing some there and others elsewhere is reportedly seen as an alternative option.

Spurs are yet to gain control of all the land on which the new stadium will be built and are waiting on a Compulsory Purchase Order, which could potentially lead to legal action and delay the ground’s construction. They currently hope to start the 2017/18 campaign at the new stadium.

One can safely assume this report is nonsense.

Spurs get 38,000 and probably could fill 45,000 - 50,000 with increased capacity. We hold 30,000.

Given that Spurs fans will have easy access via tube I can't see a massive amount of interest in travelling 80 miles here or to Brighton or Milton Keynes.

Given Wembley and the Olympic Stadium are close by, plus Fulham, Charlton, Millwall etc nearby with capacities of 20,000 - 30,000 before you even get on to Palace, West Ham, Chelsea and so on and other sides that must be closer than us there is no way this is happening.

I can't see more than 20,000 making it to Portman Road, which then makes other grounds closer by much more viable.

Asking Spurs fans to fork out £40 / £50 for travel each game instead of £5 for an underground ticket is simply not going to happen.

This sounds like the type of nonsense you get in the Evening Star this time of year.

We could make good money but would worry about the state of the pitch presuming there would be at least 3 games every 7 days

Hasn't ME told anyone about the extra tier going up on the Cobbold Stand to increase our capacity to 40K?

I cannot believe this story either, surely they could ground share at the Olympic Stadium. After all they were competing with West Ham to who would get their hands on it once the Rugby World Cup had finished.

I can't see this happening, and if it did the risk is that some fans would go to the Spurs games and become Spurs fans rather than watching ITFC!

Kuqicoup - not being funny, but it's hardly like all Spurs fans live in London is it? Let's be honest!

To make this work Spurs need to get relegated next season and the season after - then the remaining 5000 Spurs supporters would fit in Portman Road no problem.

Have sent this link to my Spurs supporting mates for a good ole chuckle.

To be fair to radiogaga, a lot of Spurs fans would be making the trip from Potters Bar, Barnet, Cambridge, etc.

Absolute load of nonsense. If you're a club in North London looking for somewhere to play, I seriously doubt Ipswich is anywhere near the top of your list, or indeed anywhere outside the capital.

I see no reason to allow small clubs to play at Portman Road.

It would be a real short term view of ITFC to allow this to happen for a few extra quid.

How many young fans would they take from us?

Won't happen. Clearly Spurs will play at Wembley or the Olympic Stadium, or both. With two huge stadiums in London always looking for some extra revenue, why would they chose a smaller stadium 70 miles outside the capital?

Suffolk constabulary would certainly support a North London derby taking place in Town.
