Foley: Norwich Board Vetoed Appointment
Saturday, 24th May 2014 09:19

Town academy coach Steve Foley says the Norwich City board vetoed his appointment by new Canaries boss Neil Adams.

As reported on Thursday, the 60-year-old was set to return to Carrow Road as first-team coach on a three-year contract but the board, under fire from fans for installing Adams rather than a higher profile manager, refused to sanction the appointment, according to Foley.

“I’m devastated and embarrassed for myself and Neil,” he told The Sun. “I couldn’t believe this was happening, especially that they would undermine Neil on his first day.”

Yesterday, Ryman League Division One North side Needham Market, where Foley has been working as head coach alongside his Town role, confirmed his departure to Norwich before later withdrawing their statement and issuing another press release stating that he would now be staying at Bloomfields.

Foley previously worked at Carrow Road in a number of roles between 1996 and 2006, during which time he coached Adams, having initially been brought to the club by Mike Walker.

After his Norwich contract as Nigel Worthington's first-team coach was terminated following the 2005/06 campaign, Jim Magilton added the former Colchester United stalwart to his Town staff in a specialist skills coach role.

Foley left the Blues in 2010 during Roy Keane’s time as boss but was brought back to the club by academy director Bryan Klug as a youth development coach in the summer of 2012 working with 12-16-year-olds, while also coaching part-time with Needham Market.

Meanwhile, Adams is reported to want ex-Town boss and one-time Canaries striker Joe Royle as his director of football.

jason0999 - absolutely right - sc-m by name and nature.

Can understand Adams wanting Foley - great experience and top man / coach.

........... seems as if Adams will have no say in anything, just there to take the flack if / when it all goes wrong.

Cannot believe ANY Norwich Supporter would be pleased with this development - but we are - he's still with us.
Tell them where to go next time Steve.

I think all town fans can congratulate the Scum board for acting true to their nature. Appointing Adams, when Mackay was available, is just bewildering. However, I am not complaining!

That is disgusting treatment, and just reaffirms all of our long-held beliefs.

London has Piccadilly Circus.
Norwich has Carrow Road circus.
Long may they continue to entertain with their antics.

It just gets better and better. Highly amusing watching our friends up the road lurch from one terrible decision to the next, what next? Joe Royle to turn them down and Brian Gunn installed as director of football!

shoddy behaviour, a club in turmoil I am sure they are going to struggle to keep players if this is how they behave with the manager.

I once went out with Steve and his family after a game during the Magilton days. A really interesting man, but he felt hugely let down by Norwich before. This must really hurt him that they have treated him like this.

Lets hope history is repeating itself. Give it a year: Norwich City 1 Colchester United 7.

The Narrrrich guide to running a football club. Step 1. Sack manager with 1 one winnable game left of the season, step 2, appoint club "legend'', step 3, completely undermine said legend on his first day, step 4 get relegated? Oh for it to be, let us all invoke the spirit of Bryan Gunn

Strange things going on at Carrow Road these days. Wolves got relegated two seasons in a row and i can see Narwich going the same way. It seems that the board want to have greater control on the footballing decisions like player transfers. Got a feeling that one or two turned the job down as weren't going to have total control on the playing side.

...... if they get Joe Royle as Director of Football - it may just be their saving grace, otherwise I can see them spiralling .......... hopefully anyway.
