Skipper Edwards OK to Travel to Leeds
Monday, 27th Jan 2014 11:11

Skipper Carlos Edwards is fine to join the rest of the squad as they travel to Yorkshire today for Tuesday’s game against Leeds at Elland Road. The 35-year-old was subbed at half-time on Saturday with a minor groin problem.

Manager Mick McCarthy says the Trinidadian has confirmed his fitness: “He’s all right, I just walked past him in the dining room and said ‘How are you, Carlos?’ and he said ‘I’m all right’, so that’s a glowing reference for him, I guess.

“He’s OK, he just had a sore groin, he had a bag of ice on it, so I wasn’t going to leave him on and risk him getting injured when I’ve got fresh legs sat there ready to go. I’ve got no reports from anybody else from Saturday, everybody’s OK.”

New right-back Frazer Richardson, who will be on loan with the Blues until the end of the season, will be on the bench with McCarthy not planning to play the 31-year-old, who has been handed the Town number 24 shirt, from the start.

“It’s unlikely when we’ve just won 2-0 against Reading and my back four were outstanding," he said. "He’ll be in the squad.”

Midfielder Luke Hyam is again set to miss out and is likely to be sidelined for around the next fortnight: “Nothing’s changed. I’ve just seen him, he’s feeling OK, but he will be.

“It’s not on his knee joint, so he’ll be able to bend it OK once it starts to heal. He was always going to be two or three weeks. Three weeks from when it happened was the prognosis at the time and that’s not changed as yet.”

Striker Sylvan Ebanks-Blake is likely to return to training next week and to match action a little while after that: “I would think Sylvan is two or three weeks as well. He was always going to be [back in training in] the first week in February.

“We tried to get him out on the grass yesterday but it had lashed it down so much it was counterproductive to somebody with a hamstring injury. He’s hoping to be training in the first week in February.”

McCarthy says the wet conditions at Playford Road — academy matches and an U21 game were postponed due to waterlogged pitches last week — have had an effect on training.

“The lads are great, they go out and train as they should whatever the weather and whatever the conditions, but the pitches have been heavy and you don’t want to be on them too long,” he said.

“We’re not training at all today because of it. For what we do today prior to a game at Leeds — and they didn’t play at the weekend — we’ll just go up to the hotel and have a swim tonight and stay off the pitches.”

Given that we saw Anderson's best 45 minutes in a Town shirt when he replaced Carlos, I hope that Mick starts with him tomorrow night.

I think we'll probably start with the same side that played the second half on Saturday. Hopefully Anderson will start to show what he can do now he's been given a more attacking role. I think we'd happily take a draw but Leeds are there for the taking at the minute.

Hopefully CE is not in the starting line up after how we played in his absence on Saturday. Good servant of the club but his best days are behind him

Totally agree with the above comments that we looked a better side in the second half when Carlos was not on the pitch.

Does anyone know if Ebanks-Blake is going to remove his backside from the treatment table anytime soon

There is no doubt Edwards used to offer us a lot. I feel now he should be used as back up player, whether that is for Anderson or someone else.

Sorry Carlos but Anderson did enough when he came on yo keep his place. We need players to ATTACK. Fed up in this ultra cautious approach but appreciate especially away from home we do need to keep it tight. Its good to have competition for places. COYB's

Think it would be very harsh on Anderson to put him back in the subs tomorrow night

Anderson has to show more consistency but that could be said for a number of our midfielders, but as mentioned probably the best half of football on Saturday since he's been here. Going to be a bit of a battle, Leeds desperate to get back in the 'mix' after not winning for some time.

It was a' game of two halves' Saturday.First predictably mundane but solid and 2nd how I had been banging on for us to play at home ,taking the game to opposition.

Mick gave no indication that he did anything at half time but at last we attacked with width.I think Carlos is a good footballer but Anderson had a good second half so I am sure he will stay in.

Had said previously that Jury out on Paul Anderson;but feel he is showing signs of improvement unlike Nouble or Tabby really so hope they are not in starting line up.

Would like to see Paul Taylor given a run out though as he seems to be an attack minded player which makes the game so much more exciting and entertaining and also gets the crowd going. What a different atmosphere second half.

Still are playing away 2moro but would like to see same team as started second half on Saturday, with hopefully the same positive attitude.

He's been here years and has a good attitude, but I still feel we haven't seen the best of Carlos who joined in a £4M deal with Leadbitter. Under Keane he was poor a lot of the time, as were the whole team. Under Jewell he was wasted at right back, which I will never understand given how weak our defence was then. Under McCarthy he was/is 34/35 and coming to the end of his career.

We did play better in the 2nd half on Saturday and Anderson deserves to start but then everyone in front of the back 4, bar Hunt (who was good throughout his 60), played better in the 2nd half and that wasn't just down to the Carlos/Anderson sub! We don't abandon our club captain because of a patchy 45 mins carrying a bit of an injury, be fair everyone!

Keeping the same side which started the second half against Reading seems the logical thing to do. An early goal will put Leeds under pressure and their crowd, who are notoriously fickle, will turn on them!

I'd start the same team as sat keep it tight first half then go at them second half when hunt/Edward tire stick Taylor one side Anderson the other
