McCarthy: No Frustrations
Monday, 13th Jan 2014 15:38

Mick McCarthy says he’s not frustrated despite being unable to pay fees for new players during the January transfer window. The Blues boss says he understands the constraints of Financial Fair Play and will interested to see those breaking the rules receiving sanctions from the Football League.

On Saturday, McCarthy said he would be looking to add to his defensive options during January but would be only be able to look at loans or players close to coming out of contract elsewhere.

“I understand the gig, the parameters of it, Financial Fair Play and if that is what we’re doing, what we’re sticking to,” he said. “If it’s coming in then we should stick to it.

“I’d just be interested to see all the fines that are given out to people who break the rules and whether they do get implemented and what happens at the end of it.

“I’m happy with the lads I’ve got, we’ve got a great set of players, blokes, they’re terrific. If we can keep them fit, that’s the reason why I won’t be playing some of them tomorrow. Yes, they’ll miss Tuesday, but they might be fit for the next 10 games, which is vital for us.”

Under the Football League’s Financial Fair Play rules, Championship clubs are able to make a loss of up to £8 million during 2013/14 with those who spend beyond that limit set to face sanctions, including a transfer embargo.

Those transgressing the rules who are promoted to the Premier League will be subject to a Fair Play Tax on their additional spending, ranging from 1% on the first £100,000 to 100% on anything over £10 million.

McCarthy says he’s looking for players to augment his squad and fight the current incumbents for their places rather than replacements: “I always listen to managers and they’re all saying they need this player or they need that player and I wonder sometimes what those players who are there are thinking.

“I’d sooner give my players a bit of toffee because they deserve it. We were in the top six up until the weekend and we lost to a team where one player probably cost more than my whole squad and there might be one player who is earning more in a week who isn’t even playing.

“Do I get too upset about it? No, I think we’re doing great with the squad we’ve got. I think they’re a great set of lads and if I can add to it I will, but not just beefing the squad up with players who are not going to get in.

“It’s got to be somebody who’s got to come in and compete and if he gets in he stays in and keeps one of the others out. And that’s not easy to get.”

Meanwhile, McCarthy was surprised to hear that Town were including on a list of scouts watching yesterday’s Benfica-Porto match: “I’ll have to check, I doubt that very much unless we’ve got somebody on holiday who fancied going to watch the game!”

“I'd just be interested to see all the fines that are given out to people who break the rules and whether they do get implemented and what happens at the end of it." - He sounds sceptical and so am I, there are teams in a far worse financial position than ourselves yet we are fully committed to ffp. Why can we not simply reign in spending a little and see what the precedent is?

I said 6m,looks like its 8m overspend this season then.
Hope this lack of any money to spend doesn't make MM think about moving on though imagine he is on a fair old salary.
May also be wrong on this, but don't think the sanctions have been finalised yet?

I thought the Managing Director's said that MM would have funds to spend if needed.

Has that changed?

@hampstead_blue - nothing has changed.

Wages.

I appreciate that the Fair Play rules restrict our spending, but I hope Mick doesn't become disillusioned and move on as Joe Royle did.

hamstead-blue .... you need to read between the lines. I bet its a case of "MM will have funds to spend if needed [provided we get a fair whack for Cresswell]

why oh why cant people think before they post on here. the mds said that funds would be available in jan and they are. to sign players, whether it on loan or a free still costs significant money with agents fees, signing on fees for the player, loan fees. at no point did they say that funds would be available for transfer fees to be paid, just that money would be available to mm to strengthen. seems many just want an excuse to have a go at the club and make out they've been untruthful in their comments, when they clearly haven't. and before ne1 accuses me of always simply trying to be positive, no, im not happy with everything about the running of the club, but just choose not to criticisr jusr for the sake of it

I find it amazing we got to top 6 with our squad. My wish is only to see a rightback to balance out the attacking threat from the right hand side. Currently that is our weak spot for goals conceded ,not least as opposition attacks are focussed on that area ,the reason for this is chambers is not an attacking threat and causes the opposition left mid no issues from a having to track back perspective. So if you get 12 attempts in a game to have a go at chambers level with our box then for sure one will create a guilt edge chance. On Saturday Krakjar had no defending to do. Got possession and attacked Chambers. Thats one example there are a fair few sadly. Chambers is a class act in the centre , he is doing a job. Its not his fault. COYB

blues1 - ..... care to tell us what you are not happy with ? .... very interested to know.

..... so easy to suss us out - we suffer from the same positional frailties week after week.

Don't take a genius of a Manager to know that anything down the right we will have a problem with, and at the same time we create very little.
If we don't change things we will suffer from this even more during the remainder of the season - as the not so clever get to grips with us.

An article from twelve months or so back but worth a revist unfortunately

I think Mr Cresswell will be on his way and thanks Mr Jewell for the purchase !

Good cover in Tyrone Mings IMO

Mick and the players have done a fantastic job. But I simply can't see how we can push on into he playoffs with the squad we have, particularly when injuries and suspensions inevitably hit. Suspect Micks comments on fines for clubs breaking the rules are tongue in cheek. Other clubs will spend (rightly wrongly). What I find remarkable is we can't spend anything, even say £250k! For me ME should have backed Mick, not with millions, but with a small amount of cash at least. I continue to worry that Mick will leave if other clubs spend and we don't.

Lets face it, even if mick is frustrated with the lack of backing he's not exactly going to say is he?? Unlike that whinge bag billy davies at forest, who in his first spell did nothing but whinge and moan about investment from the board. He then comes back for a second spell and has been backed by the rich kuwaiti owners and ive just seen he is now asking or appealing for more backing in jan window. Talk about flaunting FFP!! hope they dont go up. Try being in our shoes u greedy tosser

jason0999 - totally agree with you - I have a feeling that he will put up with so much of the tight purse strings, however he's seems ok with it at the moment - he may just think that at his time of life a monthly salary, and in a job, is more important than winning things. Perhaps mid table will suffice for him, and keep him happy during a time of managerial merry go rounds within the game. Just a thought.

Jimmy86 - ... didn't realise i had anything to do with that - only thing i would say is I think Billy Davies and Mick McCarthy are currently the complete opposites - personally I would like to see MM somewhere between the two. BD'S desire for his and his Club's success cannot be questioned that's for sure - a born winner.
Only an opinion mind - no more no less.

bluey123 - he has an interest - but possibly not in the direction the likes of you and I would want it to be.

Yea i agree with you blueboy1981 i only asked why you didnt agree with my post coz see ya hit the minus button and usually we sing from the same hymn sheet. Billy davies is certainly ambitious and cant fault him for that, Wish mick would speak up about lack of funds and say come on, we within touching distance give me some money to strengthen

blueboy1981 added 20:28 - Jan 13
Jimmy86 - agreed - Billy Davies is certainly the kind of person i could work with - second best is never going to be good enough, and he let's everyone know it. That would be 'music to my ears' - and probably yours too.

I read your posts with interest and feel we spend most, if not all, of the time on the same wavelength.

We people are not allowed to agree you know - it's termed as being negative by some - but who cares ?

Even if FFP hadn't come in yet, you can see why the club would go with this transfer policy, Look at the millions we have wasted on the likes of Leadbitter, Priskin, Chopra,Martin and JET compare that to what we have picked up as free transfers Mcgoldrick,Skuse,Berra,Chambers,Murphy, Ebanks-Blake,Hunt.

The fact is you don't need millions to build a good team, you just need a top manager which we have.

Firtsly, I really dislike footballer's agents, they are an absolute waste of money and leeches within the sport we love.
Second, does anyone know of one team that actually has no debt and makes enough money to spend on plyers without breaking FFP rules..interesting times?
Thirdly....COYB!!!!
