McCarthy Looking to Add to Defensive Options
Monday, 6th Jan 2014 16:24

Boss Mick McCarthy says he could look at strengthening his defensive options during the January transfer window.

Over the last week young right-backs Elliott Hewitt and Frederic Veseli have respectively joined Gillingham and Bury on loan to gain experience, leaving the Blues short on defensive cover.

McCarthy told the club site: “I’m absolutely delighted with the squad of players we have got here and we have Sylvan Ebanks-Blake and Hunty in there now as well.

“With the window open, it’s possible that we could have one or two changes. Players going out on loan might open things up to bring someone in.

“We have only used the five lads at the back, Cressy, Tyrone, Tommy Smith, Christophe Berra and Chambo and they have done remarkably well. That is perhaps an area where we could look to strengthen squad-wise.”

Former loanee Richard Stearman may be amongst those who come into McCarthy’s thoughts as he looks to add to his options, Town having been priced out of a move in the summer.

The 26-year-old, who is out of contract in June, has been offered new terms by Wolves and has been a regular in their side this season, but Town could renew their interest should no agreement be reached with his current club.

blueherts - Bakary Sako would be a great signing if we could pull it off, especially as our wingers haven't exactly been performing at their full potential so far this season. (Even maybe on loan)

Another defender? really. We have with the exception of Skuse the most ineffective midfield. It's here that we really need strengthening. And if we do get a couple of wingers let's play them out wide Mick not tucked in so that yes we can destroy but not create.

Carloss, think Mick was talking about at the training ground? He wouldn't have known Titus was in the Sir Bobby Robson suite as he would be preparing the lads for the ko.

Bearing in mind we have three defenders out on loan though am a bit surprised;but we all know how defence minded and cautious he is;but like most think midfield or even up front is just as important.

We mustn't forget that at the beginning of the window MM was saying he was happy with squad and didn't need anyone;so we must wait and see, makes the window a bit more interesting now though!

We already play with 8 or 9 defenders every game

If Mick is so happy to have Hunt in his squad why doesn't he play him more? He's a real livewire and makes things happen, as proved against Blackburn. We could have more than done with him against Preston. And at least he knows which way the opponents' goal is - something a bit lost in quite a few moves we saw on Saturday.

Agree with Wark the Wark, what do we need with another defender. The team is crying out for a pacey creative midfield player who could score the odd goal.

Not asking for much am I ????

Sorry mick but id suggest midfield is where you should be looking to strengthen!!! CM, winger and a natural right back. Chambers is doing a good job so's to accomodate berra. Berra has been solid but in my opinion hasn't been good enough to break up the effective chambers/smith pairing. Berra lacks pace and is indecisive at times when dealing with balls into our box and is a bit of a hoof ball merchant at times, which gives the ball straight back and invites pressure

we have used 6 as Hewitt played the first 5 games and to me has been hard done by i still think Smith and Chambers are best 2 in the centre end off and clean sheets speak volumes

We all know what we want I'd bet a million dollars that mm already has 2 choice for whatever position he wants to fill in mm we must trust tip top guy just remember we probably still paying his bonus from last seasons miracle yes just think about that how many men would have got us out of the quagmire.the best is yet to come

Walk the Wark - ...... a short sharp post - but much truth in those few words. Even then we can't defend a lead terribly well - or so it continuously seems

A playmaking midfielder is what we really need but if it is to be a defender here are a few facts:
Stearman is a better right back than Chambers.
Chambers and Smith is a better pairing than Berra and Smith.
Do the maths

We need a central midfielder to play with skuse, someone who will link up with Murph and Macgoals, a player similar to that Reid at Forest.

Cornardblue - completely agree about andy Reid. Drives their entire attack, scores, is always available for a pass and has a decent engine these days - unfortunately, players like him don't come around very often, especially in the champ. Was gonna suggest someone like tom cairney but he moved to Blackburn a few days ago sadly

I think MM is deflecting attention to an area which he knows is almost settled, he's a wiley old fox and he's probably already lined up some interesting people. I hope!!!!

Agree with Mick that we need defensive cover. Having said that the current defence has done very well. Also agree with some previous comments that creative midfielder is also required.

ChrisMakinin2012 is absolutely right. No point in keeping Tabb, Anderson, Nouble or Wordsworth. To get promotion we need players who are above average at Championship level or have the potential to be above average. None of these players meet those criteria. One creative midfielder who can carry the ball from defense and make the key pass to a forward would massively improve our team. So often the Central defenders pass sideways to each other or hump the ball up field because no unmarked midfield player makes themselves available. Leicester City showed us the way to play the ball from defense through mid-field along the ground.

I cant see why we need a 3rd right back at the club? Hopefully
Mick means another central defensive midfielder to give hyam and skuse competition! But yeah a midfielder capable of providing defence splitting passes :) I would keep Nouble btw. I think if we still had N'daw we would possibly have kept more clean sheets this season, chambers and smith should be reunited :)

Apart from Skuse our midfield is poor. That is where we need to strengthen, although a specialist right back would also be welcome.

I'd prefer getting stearman in right back like u guys are sayin and start searching for a new midfielder.

In my opinion the best midfielder we have is Skusey, Jay tabb isn't that good and neither is wordy I'm guessing. Anderson does stuff, even Luke.

I'd probably put Tabb/Wordy out on loan and start searching for some quality midfielders like Skuse.

We will not be getting a creative, ball playing midfielder. Firstly that is not how Boring Billy (MM) plays and secondly Mr Marcus (I don't care, I want to sell the club) Evans will not make any funds available. Remember the close season?

Delighted with the squad? Yeah right Mick, though understandably he has to say that of course - but quite frankly we have six or seven players in our squad who just aren't good enough...

Forget bringing in this wonderful creative midfielder, though having said that a sneaky little loan from a prem side wouldn't go a miss...Andros Townsend eh, remember him? :)

This story is about Mick looking to add a player (or possibly 2) to the defence, which makes absolute sense with 2 defenders from a smallish squad gone out on loan in recent days. It doesn't mean that Mick isn't, or shoudn't be, looking to add a midfielder to the squad also, so I can't understand why people are getting hung up on "forget the defence, what we need is a midfielder" posts.
As for the idea of what defender we should look to bring in, it again amazes me that anyone would be against the idea of signing Stearman. He was great for us last season, works well with the manager & is of a quality well above the majority of centre halves & right backs in the Championship - in my opinion. I think Chambers & Smith were a very good partnership for us last season, but I also think Berra has been super for us this season, however we have been hugely lucky in that we have not had any real injury issues there over that time. We would be in serious difficulty if one or more of those 3 was to be out for a few weeks through injury or suspension. I also think Stearman is a better right back than Chambers & would play him there if he were to join. Also Mick seems keen on looking at 3 centre backs from time to time & I don't see Mings as the answer at right wing back with Chambers back on the right side of a back 3.
By all means get that creative midfield player - Graham going back should have opened that vacancy - but don't overlook the possibility to sign a quality defender (Stearman or AN Other) if available during this window.
