McCarthy: We Let Our Guard Down
Saturday, 19th Oct 2013 18:21

Town boss Mick McCarthy felt his side would have earned a deserved a point but for letting their guard down and conceding Scott Arfield’s 80th minute goal.

“They’re an accomplished side but no more accomplished than us,” McCarthy said afterwards. “Except that they had a Johnny on the spot that took a chance by running in and got on the end of something. I don’t think there was anything in the game.

“You only get what you deserve and I thought they defended their goal for 90-odd minutes and we just let our guard down a little bit.”

Overall, he was pleased with his side’s display: “I thought we played well, I was delighted with how we played, against a good side.

"Were they that bit better than us? I don’t think so. They’ve had people putting the ball in the net.

“I thought it looked like a goalless draw coming up but I thought we made three or four tiny little errors in terms of letting the cross come in. Somebody just said to me that it was a great cross and a great header, but it always is when you score.

“He gets across and he does well, he runs in the box. We left the middle of the goals, we should have stayed in and stayed narrow and it’s cost us.”

McCarthy believes the teams take much the same approach to the game: “They’re very similar how they play. They defended their goal when we got in behind them a couple of times.

“But then apart from the goal, so have we. But unfortunately apart from the goal is the only thing that counts. And we lost.”

It’s far from the first time this season that McCarthy has said Town have played well but without getting anything for their trouble.

He says stopping small mistakes such as those that led to Burnley’s goal is what will help turn those performances into points: “The tiny little errors that came, there were about three or four of them for the goal.

“If it was us that scored, I’d be saying that it was a good cross, a good run, a good header, all that. Fair play, let them enjoy that because that’s won the game.

“But I know what’s cost us, tiny little things, tiny detail. It’s left us with no points when we should have had a point.”

Keeper Dean Gerken was forced off with an injury in the first half but McCarthy says it’s not too serious: “He’s got a dead leg, we’ll see.”

Burnley manager Sean Dyche thought his side just about shaded it: “I thought they had the better end of the first half, but yet again there were small margins.

“I thought the framework the team play from and some good basics made us solid enough not to concede first half.

“Not that there were loads of chances in the first half for either side, but the overall feel of the game was that they had the upper hand.

“In the second half, it levelled. There were pockets of good play from ourselves.

"You’re watching and thinking it was going to be one of those days when it is a 0-0 but I thought it was a moment of quality, a very good cross and a very good header, which took it in the end.”

Is this all you guys can do Is moan? ( most of you ) anyways from the past two three years yes I remember Ipswich finished in the lower half of the table. Actually this time last year mick became manager and we were sitting bottom yes ? And now we are sitting in the top half of the table. So I see a bit of progression there, and when you criticise the manager or players I would like to see you guys do a better job than them oh wait....

30 quid on the gate. Didn,t go. Glad I didn,t. We know what the performances under MM will be like. Not pretty on the eye. Was great how he kept us up, but as a club, we are not moving forward at all. Like many other supporters, I,m not prepared to pay over the odds for dull dross.

Pinewoodblue - 'not moving forward', are you mental?

Keanish...........Please explain how how you feel we are moving forward then. We have a faceless corperate owner, 2 M D,s that are completely out of touch, crowds on the wane, negative dull football on the pitch for the most part, massive ticket prices for most matches....................yes, I,m mental.

'How have we gone backwards'?

Last season's last 12 games: W6 D3 L3 pts: 21 Clean sheets: 7

This season W4 D3 L5 pts: 15 Clean sheets: 2

I rest my case.

12 games in and already after what seemed to be so much promise for the season, I'm bored already. Same old same old. Every year we are falling further and further behind these so called smaller teams wake up people the glory years are gone. Without proper backing we are after all just going to be one of those smaller teams that we used to smash at home ie Burnley (1st win in 40 odd years at PR and only the 2nd win ever) I rest my case!

Interesting stats TimmyH but I still think that, overall, we are in far better shape than last season. Certainly it would be hard to argue that if (and increasingly it looks like when) MM goes off to the Ireland job, he will be leaving a club in much better shape than the one he walked into.

On another note, how is it that most weeks only half the turnstiles are open in Cobbold? I asked a steward yesterday, as we waited in a long queue in the rain. He told me that eleven turnstile operators hadn't turned up!!

Another game against a team that Mick said will be a team there or there about at the end of the season that we have got no points from, how are we meant to be a top 6 team if we can't point up at least a point against these teams. You don't win games if you don't score.

william121, oddball, Keaneish - it's because of people like you that this Club will never be, or need to be, successful again. You are typical of this Club of today.

Have some ambition people, and expect things to be right - as thankfully 'others' do.

People are perfectly entitled to grumble. I watched the same game MM did, nothing in it between two decent sides. On another day we'd have been leading at half time, but there was only ever going to be one goal in it. The positive I take is that, if Burnley are a top of the table side, Town really don't have much to do to get up among them. Time to dip into the loan market if you ask me, find something for Taylor to do when he comes back and maybe look at a change of formation (I'd go 3-5-2).

Oh and you think by whinging it will improve, go back to our last four managers, back to jim magilton on this forum and it was the same calling for managers head. Of course we all want to do well but so does every fan from every team. And if we get to the prem what then whinge if we finish 17th. Get behind the team, enjoy our common interest we are moving in the right direction.

And how on earth do u think that because some of us dont whinge this in some way impacts upon the performance of the team, of course it doesnt. All about levels, ours at the mo is the championship and there is no quick fix out of it, margin between success and failure is small and luck probs plays a large roll in it.

Mick is a decent manager and none of us (i assume) are. BUT as a fan sat in the stands it is clear our main focus and strength of attack comes down our left side. If that is stopped by the opposition then we don't really have a plan B as it were.

With the players we have in our squad it seems obvious to play 3 central defenders (Berra, Chambers and Smith) with 2 attacking full-backs (Cresswell and Hewitt). Not only would that make us solid, it also offers far greater threat going forward. Also another option of attack if one or the other gets 'marked out'.

This would mean dropping one of the midfielders, but would also be a perfect system in which to get the best out of Taylor once he returns...

Anyway. Mick is the manager and knows far more than me, just an observation

Three games ago when we beat Brighton it was 'Super Mick!'
Now after a narrow home defeat apparently he should be sacked 'cos he is useless.
I guarantee that if we win out next match most of you lot will all be in favour of him again.
Laughable.

Yeah you are, you like everyone other negative commenter who comes out of the wood work when we lose are expecting miracles. Anything mid-table and above this season is clearly progression from where we've been. This season is about stability and anything near the top 6 is a good season.

Boring football? Explain. I haven't seen any this season. And as the tickets are 'too expensive' for you to watch, what are you basing that on!!?
I'm not defending the pricing structure on the ticket sales by any stretch but since MM and TC have come in the club has stabilised, we've got rid of all the high earners and over 30's, we're more solid as a unit and have established our self in the middle of the table with a settled squad and a nice blend of youth players.

Faceless owner? Who cares? He's saved the club and spent a fortune on it so what's your point here?

Out of touch MDs....WHAT? Nonsense comment. No basis for this.

Go and support your club and stop whinging. Those calling for MM to go are shameful excuses for supporters.

I very much agree with Truthhurts. With the players we have, 3-5-2 seems the way to go, with Hewitt and Cresswell good attacking wingbacks. Skuse and Tunnicliffe as holding midfielders, and Taylor joining in with front two. We won't see this, however, as Mick does not look beyond 4-4-2, and playing his "wide" men narrow. It's so easy for younger, brighter managers to counter.
Most goals this season have come courtesy of McGoldrick's brilliance. Without him we are still bottom three. Mick can get one thing right.

I agree as well truthhurts.

My feeling is ME has said to MM, objective number is to keep us in the division, objective 2 stabilise the side and the wage structure and get us into a decent position. I think objective 3 will be to splash a bit of cash wisely in January to support a play-off push and for that it means bringing in a bit more creativity and fire power.

Keaneish. I most certainly have not "come out of the woodwork". I have been to 3 home games & 2 away, the football has been dull as ditch water in most of these, the exception being the 1st 20 minutes at home to Leeds. Yes, MM saved us from what looked like certain relegation last season, there is no denying that. As he wasn,t given diddley squat to spend on players this summer is also a factor in the standard of football on offer. You obviously have a very different view to me of what "boring" is. Our owner won,t be splashing much cash if any come January because we will more than likely be too far behind the top 6 to warrant that. I hope I,m wrong.

Keaneish added 21:06 - Oct 20
When i say 'come out of the wood work', i mean you're happy to post when we lose and point fault but nowhere to be seen when we win a game on here!

If you think any Championship club is going to serve the type of football up we played in the first half against Leeds game in game out, you're sadly mistaken. And yeah, we clearly do have a different view of what 'boring' is but there's a level of reality that fans don't seem to face about the Championship. You look at any team in there at the moment, none of them are consistently playing what you seem to want as an acceptable level to watch. The Championship is a week in week out grind. Even QPR have had to kick and scrap to get to where they are and with the talent they have they should be murdering teams!

The MDs have already said there will be cash to splash in January and if we're in the same position still 7 points off the play-offs that will do me.
