McCarthy: We Let Our Guard Down
Saturday, 19th Oct 2013 18:21

Town boss Mick McCarthy felt his side would have earned a deserved a point but for letting their guard down and conceding Scott Arfield’s 80th minute goal.

“They’re an accomplished side but no more accomplished than us,” McCarthy said afterwards. “Except that they had a Johnny on the spot that took a chance by running in and got on the end of something. I don’t think there was anything in the game.

“You only get what you deserve and I thought they defended their goal for 90-odd minutes and we just let our guard down a little bit.”

Overall, he was pleased with his side’s display: “I thought we played well, I was delighted with how we played, against a good side.

"Were they that bit better than us? I don’t think so. They’ve had people putting the ball in the net.

“I thought it looked like a goalless draw coming up but I thought we made three or four tiny little errors in terms of letting the cross come in. Somebody just said to me that it was a great cross and a great header, but it always is when you score.

“He gets across and he does well, he runs in the box. We left the middle of the goals, we should have stayed in and stayed narrow and it’s cost us.”

McCarthy believes the teams take much the same approach to the game: “They’re very similar how they play. They defended their goal when we got in behind them a couple of times.

“But then apart from the goal, so have we. But unfortunately apart from the goal is the only thing that counts. And we lost.”

It’s far from the first time this season that McCarthy has said Town have played well but without getting anything for their trouble.

He says stopping small mistakes such as those that led to Burnley’s goal is what will help turn those performances into points: “The tiny little errors that came, there were about three or four of them for the goal.

“If it was us that scored, I’d be saying that it was a good cross, a good run, a good header, all that. Fair play, let them enjoy that because that’s won the game.

“But I know what’s cost us, tiny little things, tiny detail. It’s left us with no points when we should have had a point.”

Keeper Dean Gerken was forced off with an injury in the first half but McCarthy says it’s not too serious: “He’s got a dead leg, we’ll see.”

Burnley manager Sean Dyche thought his side just about shaded it: “I thought they had the better end of the first half, but yet again there were small margins.

“I thought the framework the team play from and some good basics made us solid enough not to concede first half.

“Not that there were loads of chances in the first half for either side, but the overall feel of the game was that they had the upper hand.

“In the second half, it levelled. There were pockets of good play from ourselves.

"You’re watching and thinking it was going to be one of those days when it is a 0-0 but I thought it was a moment of quality, a very good cross and a very good header, which took it in the end.”

I know I may get slated for saying this, but I really do feel the need to vent. We lack someone who can unpick defences and make a difference. Not saying he's the man to do it, but was surprised to see Wordsworth not included. Was pleased that Marriott came in, buy why bring on Nouble? Luke Hyam: Well, he lost his man for the goal and doesn't offer enough for me. Treats the ball like a hot potato at times and is the most over-rated player I've seen here for a long time. If he wasn't a local lad he'd have been slated by many more I think.

Was disappointed that Marriott didn't get the last 10 minutes, he is a natural goalscorer and , Nouble offers nothing!

Hi all, this is my first post so here goes. Sorry to say this but if Mick is happy with playing
for a point at home it,s going to be a boring rest of the season.
He did a terrific job last season but surely it,s now time to crack on and be more
adventurous. I must admit i can,t go to games now due to financial constraints but have
supported Town for over 40yrs, inc Wembley 78. So come on Mick/TC, entertain us, please

Always had a feeling we'd lose today. I think we're far too predictable to be honest. Sean Dyche has had two weeks to draw up a plan for this game as it was obvious which 11 we'd put out. Today wouldn't have been so bad if we'd beaten Derby and maybe even Sheff Weds as they were there for the taking. It's looking more and more like another year of mid table obscurity unfortunately.

What concerns me is that we may say "oh well, 1-0 against top of the table, could be worse blah blah blah, we can make up for it in other games", but we've had two great chances to make this result seem a tad better (the Derby and Wednesday games which we should have won) and it frustrates me that we can't win the games that we should. But there you go, that's Ipswich.

The only really creative midfielder we have is Wordsworth but fear he won't be played because nick is too worried about not being defensive enough. Paul Andersen is wayyy too lightweight he may as we'll not be there to be honest. After the early season optimism we all had the last 3 games have been really deflating, I've watched an average team and completely agree with what others have said about derby and Sheffield being there for the taking. Sheffield particularly was one of the worst games seen in a long time from both sides. We need someone on the wing or up top to really take the game to the opposition we're relying on McGoldrick to create everything.

Deja vu, heard it all before. Harsh facts, we are dull, robotic, routine and predictable.
This is Burnley, who would be sitting at the bottom of any average Premier League.
Realism shows that if you spend peanuts you get monkeys.....whoops no monkey comments please !!

Taylor subbed after 62 minutes for Posh, stlll not fit enough to last 90 minutes in league 1!! He'll be back in a couple of weeks?

He did hit the post early on though.

With Managing Directors who think they have got the pricing right and a Manager who thinks we should have won every game we lose and plays his useless favourite instead of a real player and clearly doesn't understand tactics, I am giving up!

How many times this season can we honestly say we haven't played well and picked up points? not often...we seem to play reasonably in most games or should I say first half of games only to go AWOL and drop points but we knew when Mick came in the football would be fairly predictable, organised and quite mundane and that's the way it's proven to be.
Last season we made strides forwards when he came in but this season I feel we've gone somewhat backwards.

Mick did a fantastic job for us last year and did keep us up without a doubt. However it should have ended there. His tactics and style of football are being left behind in the football world and he has no plan B. we need to move forward as a club and not just accept that negative football is the only kind that brings good results. I am grateful for his achievements last year but let's move forward now.

How can we have gone backwards? It can only be in your and similar heads who felt that a top six spot was a shoo in this season. Today's game could have gone either way. If it had been us who had nicked it, you and your fellow fickle doubters would be hailing a decent performance.

Overall it was a decent performance; it was just the result that was lacking.

This time last year a decent performance (even with a defeat) against a top of the table team would have been seen as a positive, and a cause for subdued optimism.

While things (results recently particularly) are not too clever, we are in a much better place now under MM's direction than in any time under his immediate predecessors.

I think Mick did a great job to keep us up last year by being hard to beat but we need to move on now, especially as we have better players. Mick seemed happy to take a point from the league leaders but, let's be realistic, Burnley are ok but no world beaters and I'm disappointed we made no concerted effort to beat them, apart from added time in the first half. I can't recall either keeper making a save and it was very mundane fare. If we are going to lose at home, let's go down all guns blazing. I thought the back 5 deserved better than to lose but the midfield, apart from Scuse, were disappointing, as was Murphy and so McGoldrick wasn't given a decent ball all game. Dull, mundane game I'm afraid and 0-0 would have done it justice.

I think everyone would have been happy with a point today. If we are realistic a point against any top of the table team would have been good. True, Burnley are no world beaters but their position shows that they are the best in the division right now. We also, are no world beaters and cannot expect to win every game.

We did put players forward, but to suggest that we should lose 'all guns blazing' is simply rediculous.

MM is a dinosaur. If he goes to Ireland its a blessing. Massively out of his depth in premiership anyway- proven

I despair at some of the comments on here. What do some people want or expect. OK so lets get more exiting football down here...that we can expect to play in League One. Wise up kiddies...if you want MM to go who will take his place? Di Canio?

scuzzer, people are not expecting as to be tale toppers, but sean dyce is an example of a manager who is tactically aware and has not splashed cash! it is possible!
