McCarthy: I Can Do Nothing About Speculation
Saturday, 19th Oct 2013 06:04

Town boss Mick McCarthy he can do nothing about the ongoing speculation linking him with his old job of manager of the Republic of Ireland. The 54-year-old says he’s not doing anything to encourage it, although won’t rule himself in or out of the running until such time as the FAI officially ask him whether he is interested.

“I can’t help what’s going on,” he said. “If they ever ask me the question officially, I’ll tell them. They haven’t and until it happens, I’m not even going to talk about it, because I just get sick of it.

“We can all speculate and talk bullshit and listen to bullshit and read bullshit about it and nobody’s actually said anything to me. Nobody.

“Then of course you’ll ask me, ‘Well, what if?’. It doesn’t matter what if. I haven’t got answers to what ifs because I don’t deal with all that.”

He admits he’s been at times variously frustrated, flattered and annoyed by the speculation, but feels it reflects well on the job he did in his previous spell as Irish boss.

“It’s a marker of the job that I did in Ireland that they’re coming back and supposedly putting me up as favourite, that’s nice, isn’t it? That’s lovely,” he said.

“I remember 12 months ago I’ve had to take a club that’s bottom of the Championship, a good club that was bottom of the Championship.

“I’ve had to put my backside in the bacon slicer - we were bottom of the league with seven points. I did it and I’ve done a good job. We’re doing reasonable this year, doing alright.

“I can’t help speculation and, as I say, until they ask me or somebody asks me, and it might never happen, that’s as far as I’m going to say.”

He says he’s happy at Town and is preparing for today’s game with Burnley: “I love being here, I love my job. I really do love being here. I’m not asking for it, I’m not courting it, I’m not trying to do anything with it.

“I’m going to be there in that dugout breaking my bollocks to beat Burnley for me and everybody else that’s associated with the club.”

He added: “It might be that I’d just like to be asked and I say yes, or I might like to be asked and say no. But I haven’t been asked.”

Mick can end it by saying you are not interested. He is fuelling it by saying you might say yes and you might say no.

If it were a no, he would have come out and said that by now so he wants the job alright but does not want to say that in case the fai won't pay his contract or he does not get an offer.

So he is being as straight talking as he can be considering he wants the job.

This means he has to stay here untill he is asked to go to ireland , really pathetic McCarthy , if you had a player like that he would be out of the door

As per usual, Mick is keeping his cards very close to his chest. He doesn't want to say no, then they make him a ridiculous offer and he goes as, to be honest, that would be worse.

He has done a fantastic job for this club. Managers want to move on to the next highest challenge. Martinez went to Everton but you dont see the Wigan fans go mad about it. We are a midtable team and i agree he should state yes or no. If we were in the Premiership it mighy be a different story.

all speculation would end if he say's a big fat, "NO, I AM NOT INTERESTED". Looking at it from MM"s point of view i suppose i can compare it to my own situation, just split up with my girlfriend ( amicable) and my ego wants her to come back to me and say sorry and she wants me back, if that happens then i can say either yes or no, until i am asked i dont know. so i guess there is a bit of that in all of us, its called human nature. But for him to say he is not fueling it is bull, especially as he is normally such a straight talking guy. The team, the club and us supporters need to feel you are 100% committed to seeing this job out.....COYB

Yes you can Mick - just say you wouldn't take the job if it was offered to you. Many other managers do it and it would end the speculation. As it is its pretty obvious that he'll go if asked.

After the way he got treated by the FAI last time, maybe he is waiting for them to ask so he can say "feck off" in his best Irish accent?

I cannot believe the amount of bad things being said about McCarthy yesterday on the other report. I think he does want the job but can you really blame him? Probably a pay rise, part time job and play against some of the best teams in the world at times. All you people who are saying he's done nothing for us are deluded idiots.

The guy kept us up from rock bottom in a record points season for relegation, while over half of our players were loans. Now we have a full squad that's completely ours (barring Tunnicliffe) that seem to have the basis of a good team and he never even had a penny to spend! The football hasn't been pretty at tines but some of you need to realise we're not the team as we were back in 1981 and that them days are long gone. I hope Mick stays as I can't think of one manager better to replace him.

The girlfriend analogy is spot-on. Mick is his own man and he doesn't need to conform to any accepted media modus operandae. He is staying but he doesn't need to tell the FAI that, it is the FAI's prerogative to ask him. Him speculating on it would be tantamount to arrogance. And also damaging to his chances of getting the job long-term wjhen he is in his 60's MM is staying...relax guys!

Maybe mick doesn't know what he will do if asked. Ever thought of that? Maybe he is just getting on with his job and maybe there is far too much speculation and uninformed ignorance on here.

he either wants it or he dosent.

he is held up as straight talking no nonsense mick but yet he wont say he wants it or not.

I think he does and if thats his attitude then he can go.

its hardly like the united job or something is it.
its a job he has had before and has no chance of winning anything in so if he wants that over the job here go now and we can get somebody in who preferabhly will play 424 and go for the throat a bit

I totally agree with most of you. He doesn't want to rule himself out and lets be honest, the man's got unfinished business over there. His words are very similar to 'Arry when the England job was going not so long ago. Lets just hope they go for MON or the 'Dark Lord'. Would love to see Roy manage them and especially our old friend Jon Walters. I miss pictures of sick appearing on twitter.

It would be interesting if Evans offered McCarthy a new ITFC contract, what would happen then? A longer contract would secure us more compensation were he to leave.

Managers and Players are all the same - offer them a bigger dollar - and they'll be off.
MM is no exception.

Only loyal people (or mugs ! ) in Football are the:- SUPPORTERS. Think about it !!.
