Keane and Brady Back McCarthy for Ireland Job
Tuesday, 15th Oct 2013 12:54

The week's concentration on international football has led to renewed speculation regarding the Republic of Ireland manager's job with Blues boss Mick McCarthy continuing to receive the backing of big names in the Irish game.

Some bookies now have the Town manager as a slight favourite to return to his old role ahead of Martin O’Neill, the man initially tipped for the vacancy, with ex-Blues boss Roy Keane also said to be in the running.

Ireland skipper Robbie Keane believes the new boss should be an Irishman and outlined the attributes he feels the new man ought to possess: "The names who have been mentioned, if any of them took over I think everybody would be happy.

"We need someone who is an honest manager, who doesn't mess around, someone who understands how important it is to be involved at international level, someone who is proud of what we are trying to achieve in Ireland. Someone who is honest."

The LA Galaxy striker sees no reason why McCarthy shouldn’t return to the position he previously occupied between 1996 and 2002: "Why not with Mick, it happens a lot."

"Holland have done that a few times. Mick is a great guy, a fantastic guy, everything we have referenced. But if it was Mick, Martin O'Neill or Roy Keane, I don't think you can go wrong."

Former international Liam Brady, now a pundit for Irish TV channel RTÉ, has McCarthy top of his list of potential successors to Giovanni Trapattoni: “I don’t know what Mick’s contractual situation is at Ipswich. What I do know is that he has demonstrated before his capability to do the job.

"He has broad shoulders and had to put up with an awful lot of messing when Saipan happened. People turned against him; public opinion turned against him and most of the media turned against him on the back of how popular Roy Keane was.

"However, Mick got on with it and he demonstrated since then that he is a very capable manager. I don’t whether it would be possible to get him, but he would be number one on my list.”

When asked about the vacancy last month McCarthy said he expected O’Neill to be given the job, but admitted he didn’t know what his response would be if he were to be approached: “My understanding is that Martin’s got it. I’m not looking for it.

“I prefer to make my decisions when somebody [in charge] asks me the question, not a journalist. If somebody does ask me the question, what will I do? I haven’t got a bleeding clue.”

FAI chief executive John Delaney recently said that his organisation was in no hurry to make the appointment.

Ireland, who currently have caretaker-manager Noel King in charge, face Kazakhstan in the final World Cup qualifier of their unsuccessful campaign in Dublin this evening.

Getting worrying. Would love Mick back as Irish manager but not yet. Always liked Mick and hope he stays with us as i believe he can take us to the premiership in the near future. Then in a few years he can return to the Irish job. That would be my ideal outcome.

my fear here is that hes not really saying anything, which leads me to believe that he'd accept if offered and the terms were correct.

I think there is one name in there with whom you could go wrong, Robbie!

If Mick McCarthy goes the world will not stop turning, some of you are losing the plot Mick is just another good manager, he is not in the first division of managers never was or will be.

If Mick goes then we're back to the problem of a owner who couldn't back a manager to save his fortune!

I also feel that bearing in mind mick hasnt ruled himself out of the job tjat he may take it if offered, question being what next if that happened?? Would our illustrious owner sell up?? As he has lost interest, or would he csrry on and go about appointing another new manager. Who knows?? Mick certainly saved us from being relegated last season so we have to bethankfull for that, what happens next, who knows

Yeah, Phil, very dodgy headline. You should have cleared it up with 'R. Keane'

I rather fear that the writing's on the wall. The longer this drags on the more I'm inclined to suspect that contract release negotiations are in progress and possibly responsible for the absence of an announcement, to date. MM may not be the best manager in the world, but he's certainly what our club needed at the time and he's continuing to both restore credibility and to reconnect it with its fan base. If only he could persuade ME to take a chance on reducing ticket prices........I, for one, think it would be BAD news for ITFC if we were to lose him at this stage.

Let this be a wake up call for ME to put his hand in his pocket and back Mick in the January window.

Once again ITFC will supply an international manager - something to be proud of I suppose. I'm not MM's greatest fan but he seems to be getting results slowly and right now I would rather he comes out and says he intends to stay and see out his contract. At least we would know where we are and the club can find someone else.
George Burley anybody?????????

....... if offered - he would accept - some of the reason would be that he has not had / will not get the backing from Marcus Evans, that he will need to take this Club of ours back to the Premiership.

Or indeed the backing he thought he would get from the onset.

Suitable offer comes in - he's OFF.

Unfortunately for us this will not go away unless Mick comes out and says he does not want the job. He will not do that I am sure, and I believe he may be gone at the end of this season. Could he do both jobs - probably not at this stage of his career. I will be absolutely gutted if he does go and as a leading light at the training ground told me at Portman Road tonight Mick has brought stability and a foundation at the Club which takes some doing after the wretched mess Roy Keane left us in and PJ struggled to overcome. Please don't go Mick.

It makes me ANGRY that most of the people on here are dismissing Mick McCarthy as Manager of ITFC. GET REAL PEOPLE!!! IF MICK LEAVES THEN IT'LL BE ONE BIG STEP BACKWARDS!!! I WISH THE FAI WILL KEEP THERE GREEN FINGERED MITTS OFF OF MICK AND LOOK ELSEWHERE FOR THEIR NEXT MANAGER, PERIOD!!!!!!! Micks record shows that Ipswich is a top 6 championship club in waiting, under his stewardship I expect him to eventually achieve a promotion push. Good managers at this level DO NOT GROW ON TREES PEOPLE, WAKE UP!!!!!!

I for one WANT MICK TO STAY PUT!! END OF.

The last thing we fans want to keep on seeing is a change of Manager every 12-18 months, CLUBS DON'T ACHIEVE SUCCESS WITH THIS KIND OF MANTRA!!!!!!!!!!!!

i WILL BE HUGELY DISAPPOINTED IF MICK LEAVES!!!!!

(rant over!)
Peace out :)

Could not agree more with you mrmorisato - well said!

MM is exactly what this club needs right now to get us out of the mire left by two previous Managers, without spending a fortune on over rated players and, at the same time, finding some young players with potential for the future.

I'm Irish, I'm an Irish Ipswich Town fan and I'm a big fan of the Ireland football team. If MM was not manager of Ireland I would be very much in favour of him becoming Ireland manager again. So you can't blame the FAI and some Irish players fancying the thought of MM being back in charge. But as an Ipswich fan I don't want him to go. He's doing an incredible job here and there's still loads to do. There is an excellent financial package on offer from the FAI and there are other high quality names being mentioned for the job like Martin O'Neill, Marcelo Lippi and Guus Hiddink. I would be happy enough with any of them once I'm certain that MM is staying with us at Ipswich.
