Chambers Hoping for Irish Caps
Thursday, 19th Sep 2013 12:32

Town defender Luke Chambers is hoping whoever is named the new Republic of Ireland manager will hand him his first ever international call-up. Martin O'Neill remains the favourite to take over from Giovanni Trapattoni, who departed by mutual consent earlier this month.

The 27-year-old centre-half or right-back was born in Kettering but qualifies for Ireland through his Limerick-born maternal grandfather and took up Irish citizenship during his time at Nottingham Forest as he was interesting the international set-up at that time.

He told the Town programme: “It’s something that I’ve always wanted to do, to test myself at the highest level and you don’t get much higher than international football. So I’m available for the Republic of Ireland if called upon.

“I’m not sure how widely known it is that I’m available, but I think the previous manager wouldn’t have seen the need to make too many changes to his squad because they have performed very well.

“But I feel that I’m playing some of the best football of my career and hopefully a call-up can follow. It’s not something I’m worried about though, as at the moment I’m fully focused on playing for Ipswich and helping this club progress.”

Meanwhile, former Town loan defender Danny Higginbotham, now at Skrill Premier club Chester, has pledged his international allegiance to Gibraltar, who have recently been granted full membership of UEFA and will be in the qualification process for the 2016 European Championships.

The 34-year-old qualifies for the British Overseas Territory via his grandmother.

If its McCarthy, he has a great chance. Lets hope for the latter, not McCarthy going.

Sounds like Dannys already living the dream.

As an Irishman, I would be thrilled with Luke wearing a green shirt, and he would be welcomed.

The Republic team is starting a new cycle with the departure of Trap, and the defence needs a complete rebuild with the John O'Shea and Richard Dunne coming to the end of their careers.

There are some decent midfielders coming through with the likes of Hull's three musketeers - Brady, Meyler and Quinn, and we are not short of decent strikers, but the centre of defence is a serious problem.

Like most defenders, he would have his hands full against the top strikers, but would learn from these games. He would more than hold his own against most European teams.

Mick, pick up the phone when O'Neill's appointment is confirmed.

Getting international experience against some of the best players in world football can only benefit him and our club. Good luck Chambo.

Whoseroundisitanyway. So presumably thats why Edwards lead the team out against Yeovil was it?. A new tactic ... Let someone else lead the team and wear the armband to disguise who really is our captain. Cunning huh

I think this would be great too, not just for Chambo but also for us. International experience really is a priceless part of development. I know Tommy is a bit younger but look how far he has come in 2 years with regular appearances for NZ on the international stage.

Some people would always argue that international duty means players come back tired but im all for our lads getting involved where they can!

Chambo is given the armband when Edwards isnt on the pitch so i would assume if this is to be Edwards last year that he would be handed the band from next year? I hope so, hes just like Big Jase DeVos and is exactly the kind of player i want to see wearing it! COYB's!
