McCarthy: Murphy Excellent But Wants More Consistency
Monday, 16th Sep 2013 06:00

Boss Mick McCarthy was delighted with striker Daryl Murphy’s display from the bench during Saturday’s 3-1 home victory over Middlesbrough, but wants to see more consistency from the Irishman. The 30-year-old, who finally joined the Blues on a permanent basis in the summer after three loan spells, was one of Town’s stand-out performers in the second half, combining well with man of the match David McGoldrick.

“I thought he was excellent,” McCarthy said. “That’s what I require from him week in, week out. Forty games a season I require that. I’ll take six below par for everybody.

“That’s the way it’s got to be, it’s got to be seven out of 10, week in, week out for 38, 40 games a season. You can have six bad ‘uns if you like, I’m not bothered, but I want consistency from everybody.”

In addition to praise for Murphy and McGoldrick, McCarthy was also impressed with loanee Ryan Tunnicliffe — who was watched by a scout from parent club Manchester United — as he made his first home start.

The Town boss says the 20-year-old, who is with the Blues until January, was replaced with Jay Tabb in the second half to add fresh legs.

“Tabby’s got energy to burn and I think Tunners had run his race,” McCarthy explained. “They were trying to stretch the pitch with their full-backs and width. He’s just got a lot of energy and he’s a good player.

“I think Tabby’s been really good and has been unlucky to be left out. But when we’d lost 75% of our games I changed it and I had to. But Tunnicliffe’s been different class, I’m really pleased with him.”

The former England U17 international is primarily a central midfielder but the Town manager says he enjoys the left-sided role he currently occupies for the Blues: “He’s played there. I discussed that with him.

“He played there at Peterborough and he’s quite happy, he quite likes that left-sided role coming in and he was unlucky not to get a goal coming in on his right foot.”

There is no doubt that Daryl changed the game around when he came off the bench at half time, start with him and Didsy up front tomorrow night please and I also think it is time Luke Hyam had a rest move Tunnicliffe inside and bring in Tabb or Wordsworth .Alan Lee on the bench for Nouble as well please.

Agree that Luke Hyam needs a break. He works really hard, but on Saturday it was clear that his distribution is not good enough.

I'm sure (and hope) MM will give Wordsworth his chance before long. He just could be the magic to set alight the McGoldrick/Murphy partnership into a potent force -something like we've seen before at Portman Road.

I'd only take Luke off if we're dominating the game. I thought his defensive midfield duties were excellent the against Boro and he kept the play ticking over more than Skuse. His range of passing is getting better every game and he's starting to hit the box with a lot more regularity. The only question marks around him are on his final pass around the box and his finishing but given his age, that'll come. We still scored three saturday and it could have easily been five or six!

I wasn't at the game but everyone seems to say Murphy was brilliant on Saturday, so he deserves a lot of praise for that because he took a lot of stick (especially from me) after the Leeds game. Hope he can find a bit of form now and chip in with some goals to take the pressure off McGoldrick.

I'd change three players from sat Anderson hyam and nouble, hyam as much as I'd love him to be a great player I don't rate him can't think of a game he has been a stand out player, haven't seen Anderson beat his man once would rather Carlos start and don't know why nouble is so poor

Mick is spot on here, Murphy had his best minutes for us this season on Saturday, but he's been practically anonymous before that. Seems to be one of those players who plays when he wants to, he's had spells when he's been great for us but he's also had spells where he looks like he's just going through the motions. During the difficult period under Jewell he looked as uninterested as any of them, a total waste of a shirt not tracking back and not seeming to care.

Put a rocket up his backside Mick. No room for deadweight in this team.

Go 442, and see if we have any goals or creativity.

until now I haven't really seen the point of Nouble - but now I get it

you start Nouble instead of Murphy - this upsets Murphy so, when you bring him on, he really puts in an effort

This has always been the problem with Murphy, consistency. We have already seen it this season. Great second half against Boro but in games before he hasn't been effective at all. I don't think Taylor would work with McGoldrick as we need a big man upfront to hold play up so others can try and break from midfield.

More importantly as Mick doesn't want to drop Chambers for Berra we're really weak going forward on the right. It's about time Mick stops buggering about with Edwards & Anderson & gave Hewitt ago on the right, ( he can't do any worse than them!) His best asset is when he goes forward he can pass, cross & also knows how to help out in defence.

Frank can't jump for toffees, or even balls, drop him. Chambo doesn't stick to his right side but wanders inland and doesn't get wide and foward - put him back in the middle

'The Murph' had a superb 2nd half on Saturday...Nouble was making a nuisance of himself to a point - but I would still expect the big man to win the headers he was constantly losing out on during Saturday's game.

And in honesty, Murph has been fairly anonymous for most of the season thus far but great effort on Saturday, keep up the good work chap!

Get off Hyams back. He has been great for us so far this season. Definitely getting into the box more as well, so close to a great goal on Sat. He must have been gutted after his great run but it will come if he keeps getting into those positions. I doubt Mick will change a winning side unless he has injuries to contend with. He is not stupid.

Six below par performances so that's Nouble out then about time to i can remember a few weeks ago everyone wanted Tunners to play but Mick thought different now he is saying he is different class well Mick please try Wordsworth instead of Hyam for thirty minutes at least second half and Tayor instead of Anderson they may be different class as well given the chance but you can bet your life it will be Edwards back in on Tuesday

Chestnut I dont really agree with your post regarding hyam, i think he did oass the ball slightly better on sat, but he is a defensive, holding midfielder and as he proved on sat, when he did hit the box he didnt know what to do with it, people are wanting luke to be our creative, attacking force in midfield and he is just not capable of doing this. He had a golden chance to put the game to bed and completely missed it!!! As a professional he should at least have hit the target and really should have buried it!!!

Excellent performance from Murphy but he needs to score more goals. Perhaps he would benefit from playing behind two strikers?
