McCarthy: Back to Our Best
Tuesday, 23rd Jul 2013 22:20

Boss Mick McCarthy was delighted with the Blues’ performance as they beat Colchester United 3-0 at the Weston Homes Community Stadium. The Town manager singled out David McGoldrick for praise, while he was also pleased to see Paul Taylor back in action a 10-month absence due to a foot injury.

McCarthy said: “It was a really good performance. I hadn’t been that happy with Saturday’s but I watched it again on Monday morning and the lads were knackered, they couldn’t get about the pitch.

“I thought Barnet played well but we weren’t anywhere near our best. I think we were tonight and but for two great saves, we could have been further in front.”

The Town boss was pleased to see his side net three goals for the first time in pre-season: “We got a good delivery in for the corner kick and a bit of good movement, so that was great to see one of the centre-halves [Luke Chambers] get it.

“I thought David McGoldrick was outstanding, his movement, his touch, his awareness, everything about him. He deserved his goal. And then there was the penalty and Murphy scored it, which was the main thing.”

McCarthy was glad to see Taylor finally make his return to action: “He’s a real bag of tricks, he’ll be a handful. It was great to see him on the pitch. I’m delighted. And he’s more delighted than anybody.”

Midfielder Cole Skuse went off with a knee injury in the first half and McCarthy says he’s not sure of the extent of the problem as yet: “I don’t know yet. Until we assess him in the morning I don’t really know.”

Skuse, who underwent knee surgery earlier in the summer, was fine after the game and his substitution was mainly precautionary.

Striker Michael Chopra was missing from the squad with McCarthy confirming that the 29-year-old was in discussions elsewhere: “He’s talking to clubs. Talking to a club."

The 29-year-old was reported to be at Barnsley yesterday — while Sheffield Wednesday have also been linked — but McCarthy wouldn’t confirm whether the Tykes were the interested party: “I wouldn’t disclose what he’s doing, he’s talking to a club.”

Fantastic to see the praise heaped on McGoldrick and Taylor, but a bit concerned about Skuse. Hopefully it will amount to nothing.

Best bit is Chopra talking to 'a club', with him gone I reckon we'll have a team spirit similar to 99/00 with him and his twitter garbage gone, just need the super star striker now, although McGoldrick could be the man!

Taylor and McGoldrick together would be quite a handful

Great to see ITFC are back competing as a club again ,getting rid of Clegg,Jet and hopefully Crapra and Marcus backing Mick who seems to be landing players in Suffolk at the rate of knots is like the old days ,was it Keane or Jewell who said players wouldn't come to Suffolk ????This is our healthiest and most professional bunch in years throw your spare tenners on us winning it,we will ,except for you Crapra your banned from betting cause your going to Barnsley your a looser.

What makes me laugh is all you lot who gobbin off bout chopra goin
Will be the first ones who turn round and say we shouldnt have let him go if he bangs in goals for fun next season. Fans have goaded him on twitter for ages, his own fans, yet coz he reacts its him at fault. Anyway on a positive note looks promising for season ahead. COYB

Kerryblue: I think they both said something similar trying to dig themselves out of holes.

Sounds promising, glad Taylor's back, Chopra gone(almost) we have a good manager , out and out wingers for once, and an overall good structure at the club, things are definitely on the up!COYB ITFC

It feels like we are more prepared now for the season than we have been for years, with decent players in all position and strong competition for places.

To think a year ago we were going into the season with our own manager describing us as down to our "bare bones" as we struggled to find loan players to plug all the gaps!

For a man who said he hated pre season & that the results didn't matter, Mick's getting a bit bullish, isn't he?

Let's be honest about Chopra: I wanted him to come here. Most of us did. It's sheer disappointment. I honestly think we were duped by sheer desperation created by poor management and a team that we wanted to believe in but we failed to see was very poor. Thankfully, Mick is destroying our reputation of an easy place to pick up a quick quid before you pack it in.

Europe, here we come!

When will the the 'proven goal scorer' brigade finally admit defeat on chopra ? He has an appalling goak scoring record with us and nobody remembers he was 4th choice striker at cardiff when we got him as he was rubbish for them too. Furthermore he has been destructive in the changing rooms and has alienated most of his own fans. Mick hasn't put a foot wrong for us but is desperate to get Chopra out so don't listen to me but respect micks view at least. He won't come back to haunt us and all that silly talk deflects away from all the positives that come from getting rid of the last of the rubbish from the clegg/keane/jewell era. Very exciting season awaits so lets focus on that

Chopra can still be a good player and probably needs a new start somewhere else, but has not done it for ITFC and has too much baggage and issues to be part of the new MM era. Good luck and good bye!

I was there last night and overall pleased with the performance too, it can't be easy changing the team completely during the match- unsettling but everyone seemed to be working hard. I do hope Carson gets time this season, i was impressed with his attitude during warm up and he seems to be enjoying himself as do the whole squad! It will be interesting to see how we fair against proper! position- defensively i think we are there at least! COYB

Final word on Chopra - he will obviously be leaving us soon so good luck to him and may his goal scoring return to him and he sorts out his private life. It did not work out for us but lets move on graciously! Looking ahead, I have not been so looking forward to a new season since - well - I can't remember. Here's to a good run in the league and the cups as well - I do miss a good cup run!

Really strong team now, glad they are jelling together! A cup run would be cool, another Arsenal at home in the semi-finals? ;) Would win 5/6-0 now haha!
