Khumalo Approach "Highly Likely"
Wednesday, 17th Jul 2013 15:41

Town are “highly likely” to make an approach to Tottenham regarding the loan of centre-half Bongani Khumalo, according to the South African international’s representative. The 26-year-old has impressed Blues boss Mick McCarthy during the friendlies at Crawley and Gillingham.

Speaking to South African website Soccer Laduma, Khumalo’s UK representative Matt Kleinman said: “Mick McCarthy has been very impressed with what he’s seen from Bongani so far and it’s highly likely that they’ll pursue the option to loan him from Tottenham Hotspur.”

Khumalo is yet to make a senior appearance for Spurs since he joined them on a four-and-a-half-year deal from Supersport United in his home country for £1.7 million in January 2011.

Whether the Blues do make an approach to take Khumalo on what’s likely to be a season-long loan could depend on the situation of another of Town’s current trialists, Titus Bramble.

Speaking last night, boss McCarthy said things are at a very early stage with the 31-year-old former Blue, who was released by Sunderland at the end of last season.

Town are very much in need of central defenders with Tommy Smith and Luke Chambers currently the only centre-halves on the books.

I'd like us to sign Khumalo and Bramble. Although Veseli was meant to impressive last night, is he any more experienced and better than Hewitt? Unless Mick's happy to go with youth in that position next season.

I agree, I think 4 cb's is about right for the number of games we'll play. I can't see Bramble getting offered loads of money by anyone and another loan won't be too expensive. The 4 cb's we will then have are pretty watertight !!

Makes perfect sense to me! He will be useful to have to keep Chambo and Tommy honest (assuming of course they are the preferred 2 starters). Still a bit concerned RE Titus and his wage demands but if a deal can be reached then i reckon we should go for that too!

Would like to see Stearman back obviously but i dont see anyone reason why Elliott cant handle the right back berth. He has looked more than capable on numerous occassions.

Also anyone remember the last young fellow we got from the lower leagues who we gave a crack in a wide defensive role? Pretty sure his name was Cresswell? He did ok didnt he?! Haha

Veseli is a centre back who happens to be able to play at right back and in central midfield. Personally I think he would be a better bet than Khumalo due to his versatility and his age.
If we could sign Veseli and Bramble then I would be chuffed, but I'd prefer not to have Khumalo on loan unless we couldn't find someone else who is just as good and on a permanent deal.

I like the sound of Veselibecause as stated, he can cover right back. Titus may be affordable, he's always said he wanted to return to the Blues and at 31 may only have 3 or 4 seasons left in his playing career. I think a posible move for Khumalo would be on loan looking to perm. Either way I'm fairly happy what MM does, he'll make the right decision. COYB

Khumalo and Bramble would be one heck of a pairing! Would feel sorry for Smith though. Still not 100% sure about Chambers - although did very well under MM last season - will he give way, or will he play at RB? Both Bramble and Khumalo will expect 1st team football I would expect.

It's about building a squad - get two decent full backs and four decent centre backs if we want to have any chance of promotion.

Right back : Hewitt, Veseli (wouldn't mind Stearman)
Left back : Cresswell, Smith, Mings, October (Mings, October maybe not good enough - only use Smith if we have decent cb cover)
Centre back : Chambers, Smith, Bramble, Khumalo

It is about the squad, but if we had Chambers, Smith, Bramble and Khumalo I am not sure how happy the two left out would be as they all seem of a quality good enough to be playing week in week out in the Championship. It could very well be that two stay fit most of the season, meaning the other two hardly feature.

Khumalo has two years left on his Spurs contract then, so not someone we could pick up on a free transfer next summer unless they release him. At 26 he's unlikely to develop enough to make the Spurs first team, but he's a brilliant age for our side. I would like to see us sign him.

I'm liking the possibility of having another good international player in the squad for next season (Khumalo), I haven't seen anything of Veseli yet but I was impressed with Hewitt at the end of last season. For me, the Smith-Chambers pairing will continue to shine ;) Will Titus work hard and play well in the Championship? I don't think his head will be in the right place for a promotion push think it better if he signed for another prem club, maybe for Palace or Cardiff??

Can only see one of these two signing and neither of them would be happy to be a back up in a Championship side!

What a great Manager we now have at our club because the poor bloke has no money to spend but he is starting to put together a quad of players that look good enough to challenge for a place in the top six and if we are lucky enough to get a player of the quality of that of Khumalo or bramble come to the club then who know where we could finish
Keep up the good work Mick
