Town Linked With Move for Broadfoot
Friday, 24th May 2013 17:30

Town are reported to have offered a deal to out-of-contract Blackpool defender Kirk Broadfoot. The 28-year-old, who is one of a number of players said to be on their way out of Bloomfield Road, was previously mentioned in connection with the Blues in March, when Blackburn, Leeds and Nottingham Forest were also linked with the Scottish international, and last summer before he joined the Seasiders from Rangers.

Broadfoot, who is 6ft 3in tall, was a youth player at Hibernian but started his senior career with St Mirren where he made more than 150 appearances in five years before moving on to Rangers on a Bosman free transfer in the summer of 2007.

Capped four times at full level by Scotland, scoring once, in addition to appearances at U21 and B levels, Irvine-born Broadfoot made 106 starts and 12 sub appearances for Rangers, scoring once during his five years with the Glasgow club before his move to the Tangerines last summer.

Broadfoot, who won three Scottish titles and a League Cup while at Ibrox, began his Seasiders career playing at right-back but more latterly was utilised at centre-half. He made 34 Blackpool starts during 2012/13, scoring two goals.

Blackpool have offered the Scot a contract, however, better terms are reportedly on offer at Town.

A right-back who can also double up as a centre-half is very much on Mick McCarthy's summer wish-list with Richard Stearman having returned to Wolves at the end of the season.

Stearman impressed during his spell at Town but the fee Wolves would want for the 25-year-old is likely to see the Blues' boss look elsewhere.

Broadfoot was labelled a donkey at Rangers because 1) he was played at RB and 2) he fell out with the fans. Blackpool fans have nothing but praise for him since he switched to centre back describing him as a real leader, future captain, consistent and committed performer who was only behind Tom Ince as their best player. He clearly isn't the answer at RB, however, Smith and Chambers, for all their brilliance last season, need competition and an able deputy to step in if they get injured. Would love Broadfoot to come in and compete with these two and then sign Stearman at RB. IMO Stearman would be mad to go anywhere else. His career was going off track until he was reunited with McCarthy. Wolves are in no position to start asking for big fees. He has a year left on his contract and Wolves need to cut their wage bill and have lots of players to sell. They don't have time to mess around.

@DanLyles- I think you make a valid point there, Broadfoot at RB was not very good, perhaps he is more suited to CB. Reminds me bit of Tommy Smith who played a few games at LB but has become a relevation since he switched to CB.

Some Town fans used to think Alex Bruce was the best thing since sliced bread, doesn't mean it was so. The only person whose judgement I trust is Mick McCarthy and if he has offered this guy a contract, that's good enough for me.

You know what they say, broad foot = wide shoe.

This one's a no brainer for me, all we have at the back at moment is Smith,Chambers, Hewitt, Cresswell, Mings. So i would say we need to add at least 2,possibly 3. Free Transfer, versatile, experienced at this level would be a good addition. Would still like to think we'll try to get Stearman as well.

Shame Saunders was sacked at Wolves. If he was still in charge we could probably have got a deal done early for stearman. As it is, stearman may be in the new managers plans! One things for sure though, he's now not worth the 1 million plus they quoted us and I'm pretty sure his contract only has a year left so it'll be interesting to see how that pans out.

As for broadfoot I guess MM and TC have taken the above into account and want to get someone in early.

Broadfoot and Stearman if Kisnorbo's not offered a contract? I'd take that!

Looks slightly gormless to me...very dissappointed if we don't go back in for Stearman.

He is prone to error after error.. think we should push the boat out for Scott Dann..

he would not have played all those games and won things with rangers if he was no good
he has just played regular footie in a team that finished above us
a good age
a good signing no question

Rumour only at the moment, but if Big Mick does decide he's fit to wear the shirt, then that's good enough for me!

I'll say it again, can we take a look at Stephen McPhail please?

He has just been released from Cardiff and would be a huge asset to our team.

Great shout Suffolkpunchdrunk - in my opinion, the player we sign in that position over the summer will be the difference between a top 6 finish and not. McPhail would fit the bill perfectly.

Not seen too much of Broadfoot to be honest, heard a bit about him when he was at Rangers but I have faith in McCarthy to bring the right players in this summer.

Would love a central attacking midfield player who can burst into the box and latch onto things, a bit like Tommy Miller used to do. I think Harry Forrester could be that type of player which we need.

Scott Dann on £30k a week.... He is not going to give that up with a year left to come here. Broadfoot mmmmm maybe but he will be looking for playing time. Maybe MM will move Chambers to right back if Stearman deal can't be done financially.
