McCarthy Happy With Point
Saturday, 23rd Feb 2013 18:33

Manager Mick McCarthy was happy enough with Town’s goalless draw at Huddersfield, despite admitting that this team didn’t play particularly well.

The Blues boss said: “It’s not the worst result in the world. Two bang ordinary teams on the day playing on a lousy pitch, playing on a difficult surface.

“They’ve had rugby on it. It’s not going to help them, for sure, it doesn’t help anybody play. But also we’re both nervous, we’re both looking at the wrong end of the table and it doesn’t promote or produce wonderfully free-flowing football with all those circumstances.

“I’ll take the point all day long,” he continued. “I’ve never had a bad point away from home.”

Town, who now sit in 19th on 39 points, four from the relegation zone, failed to significantly test Huddersfield keeper Alex Smithies but McCarthy points out that the Blues have previously got less out of games in which they have had plenty of chances.

“We didn’t play particularly well,” he admitted. “We went to Bristol City and had loads of shots on target and lost 2-1. I’m not interested in all that.

“We try to play and we try to play forward and we try to get shots in. But some days it doesn’t happen, we’ve got a point and I’ll take it all day long.”

He feels preventing Huddersfield from getting the three points is as important as Town picking up one of their own: “It’s as important to have deprived them of points. It keeps them down. It’s their home game. Bristol City came and did it to us, Barnsley came and did it to us, Peterborough did it to us.

“They all think it’s a great point. You’re all talking to me down there and say ‘That’s two points lost’. Perhaps you should be saying about Huddersfield losing two points. It’s different, isn’t it? When I’m down there at Ipswich, ‘Lost two points today, you must be disappointed’.

“Why aren’t you saying you should be delighted with a point and depriving them of two points? Let’s put perspective on it.

“I’ll take it. Coming here today, I’d have taken a point. I wouldn’t have even got on the bus, I’d have stayed down in Ipswich, I wouldn't have bothered travelling four and half hours to get here and having a heart attack in the last minute.’”

The Town manager admitted that it wasn’t an overly entertaining match: “I apologise for the s--- standard of game you’ve just watched, but I’m not going to apologise for getting a point away from home.

“It was pretty p--- poor, but it’s a point and if we stay up with one point we’ll be looking back at this and be delighted that we played badly and got a point. Stay in the league! I’m a pragmatist, not a poet. Stay in the league.”

Huddersfield manager Mark Robins thought his side were the better team on the day: “I thought we controlled it, in all fairness.

“We tried to pass, they didn’t try and pass it but they’re in a position where they’re trying to get a point. So they’ve come for a point and got a point.

“We’ve tried to get all three of them but also, on the back of the game on Tuesday night [the 6-1 defeat to Nottingham Forest], we had to make sure we were a little bit more solid.

“The players we have available and the players that we have here dictate how you play. It’s not any different anywhere else.

“And there’s a little bit of a lack of confidence in terms of passing it, and obviously the pitch doesn’t help. But we tried to pass it and do it well, and all fairness we kept possession quite well in the first half.

“I think we’ve had about seven shots on target and really we’ve had some really good opportunities to score and we’ve not taken any of them, which is why we’ve only got a point and not three.”

Mick says it how it is - point away they haven't gained on us - move on - its unlikely all the teams down the bottom will win their games in hand - their down there because they haven't won enough - in mick we trust to keep us up!!!

Needed a win today, we have a very tough run in to the end of the season and cannot see where we will get 4 wins unless we are more adventurous in attack ie. we need better service to our forwards from the midfield. Think it is going to be very close and hope we do not need some kind o result at Burnley on the last day!

11more points ish from the remaining games may be enough. Trouble is all the teams apart from wolves and huddersfield below us have picked up more points this year than we have. Shef wed bolton birmingham above us have done also. There is a nasty trend. We dont score goals ,so we cant get wins.

Its the same comments every week we just dont score enough. Why does chops, mc goldrick, murphy ,Mc clean guys that score with other teams come here and dry up.Whats up with mick looking at a new defender from man utd. Clearly we need proper width not full backs or strikers out there, also everyone knows we need a creative middle man.The defence looks half sorted but our lack of goals will cost us

How low has this club sunk??
Imagine we had aspirations of getting into the Premiership!!
It will be all change at the start of next soon whatever division we are playing in.
A major overhaul is required

Oh dear... The fact that Mick is satisfied does not bode well. He set us up for a point. We got it. But I and many fans parted with a day and much hard earned cash to watch football you'd expect to see in Sunday league. Your taking the p*** out of the fans quite frankly...

Mick may be happy with a point, i guess it,s better than zilch, but i,m not happy going to a team who's defence parted like the red sea in it,s last 2 games & playing for a ######g draw.

The only way this point today would be seen as good, is if we take all 3 next Saturday vs Leicester - anything less and we are in the bottom 3 in 2 games time

We're not shipping goals guys. Remember when we were? Build from the back and that's what Mick is doing. I think we've forgotten how bad things were a few months back for at least 2/3 years. Blimey the man is stopping us leaking the goals. We can't do everything in one go. I'm sure after the defence he will, and had (Wordsworth), start looking at the attacking / play maker area. We aren't going down. Get some positive vibes guys. I think some of the comments on here are harsh and shows either a bunch of undercover scum invaders or unintelligent impatient blues supporters. I refrain from saying loyal in that summing up.

Sick and tired of the negative attitude on this site (above comments as examples). Yes, we all have an opinion but bloody hell guys. You want Keane or Jewell back??

Get behind the team and stop bloody moaning.

Mick is right, a point there is a decent result even though Huddersfield were in poor form, they were still the home side and probably saw it as a 'must win' game. We have to grind out this season, and in the summer can hopefully assemble more the sort of side we would like.

That said, I am disappointed we didn't spend some money on a creative winger in January. It sounded on the radio that Edwards was poor again, and we all know Martin's lack of end product. With those two next to two defensive central midfielders, the strikers are not likely to get many opportunities however good they are.

NoelTheDub - quite agree with your comments, but where do we get these players from.
I don't think we will see them this term, we have too many loans now.
Dependent on where we are at the new season start will also dictate what budget MM will or will not have to play with.
After a really bad run of results, and on the back of two big defeats they were never going to roll over and let us take them apart. Plus the new manager syndrome has kicked in for them. Look what it did for us, but the honeymoon is over!
One point is better than none, however we must start picking up more than the odd point here and there, we can't rely on teams below us losing.

@blue lad. Did you go to the game today? I think as supporters we have the right to expect some form of attacking intent. I'm sick of the fact that anything other than 'Mick's the Man' posts on here attract minus points. He is not the man, AND if we play like that for the rest of the season WE WILL GO DOWN

MM came in at the start of November and has achieved a lot since then but there is still a lot to do. The fact that he labeled both teams 'bang ordinary' proves that he knows the Town team just is not good enough and so I expect a lot of transfer action in the summer.

Back to today a point is better than nothing but we have to start creating and scoring in order to stay in this division.

I have a feeling this could go to the last game of the season!

MM said it wouldnt be pretty and he was right. Survival is what its all about at the minute and if MM can keep us up we can worry about the quality of football for 2013/14!

For start I would like to think we wouldnt go into the new season with a midfield so totally devoid of creativity as the one we currently have.

AbujaBlue added 20:05 - Feb 23
Enough of the hysterics people. MM's job this season is not to get us promoted, it's not to get us playing football the 'Ipswich way', nor is it to score a ton of goals.

His job this season is to AVOID relegation and believe it or not this result has helped more than it has hindered.

Put the handbags in their holsters and let the man do his job.

Walk_the_Wark - Greetings. No I did not go today. You don't need to be at a game to see what Mick etc are trying to achieve. I'm not going to ramble on about whether we should be stuffing teams around us. The most important thing is we didn't lose. I really don't get it on here right now. Are we thinking we should be walking on water or keeping our head above water? Right now, we are doing the later. Play well and lose.....not good, play crap and get a point, happy. Sometimes its like that. Of course you would know that if you'd seen the rubbish over the last 3 years.

Over and out, bored with this now.

We were woeful today. Awful!
I live in doncaster and don't get to as many games as I would like. I agree with m m 's comments but would have really loved to see something better today. Really was a totally pants performance. Smith was by far and the way the best town player. Chambers did ok . Mcgoldricks effort and hyam a heart were appreciated as was murph us when on as sub. Ndaw was rubbish. Totally dreadful. Chopra showed a little class when on ball but closer enough to their goal. Carlos was very poor too. Such a poor all round game. 2 very poor sides. Gonna go to be wire like mick said. Only hope more of the lads can perform than today!
Summary a point from a terrible game! Coyb!!! Hope mick can get us fighting!

"a bunch of undercover scum invaders or unintelligent impatient blues supporters"
Your entitled to your veiw on this forum, how intelligent of you - but that could be just my opinion!
I am neither of the above and I don't want Keane or Jewell back, I supported them for as long as I could, they had their chances.
I do want to see our team playing proper football again, something that I have been waiting patiently for, for some seasons now.
We can all see the fundemental improvement that has occured since MM arrived, but we also saw that when the last two managers took over.
He has gone into the market and aquired a player who may be a vital cog in the machine, unfortunatly he is now injured. So he has to make do with what we have got.
It will be the mark of a good manager to get them to play as a unit, but it will take time.
I am prepared to give him that, some comments are are not so much negative ones just borne out of frustration when things don't go as fans think they should.
The only real way of finding out what the players can do is to play them in competitive games, something I feel he is doing, hence some players dropping to the bench.
Come the summer MM will have a pretty good idea of which players will be good for his team and who will be on their bikes. If players want to stay at this club they need to play for each other first, when they accomplish that they will be playing for us.
