Chambers: We Deserved to Be Booed
Friday, 14th Dec 2012 09:00

Luke Chambers has hailed Ipswich supporters for their patience so far this season. Chambers likes to connect with the paying customers, both home and away, as his fist-pumping gestures at the final whistle of games have underlined.

The central defender said: “For me the fans have been absolutely fantastic to stick with us the way they have done. I haven’t heard too many boos and to be honest the way we were performing deserved a hell of a lot of booing.

“At my previous club, Nottingham Forest, sometimes if you were 0-0 at half-time you heard the odd boo when you went off the pitch. It’s a little bit different down here and the fans have been very, very patient with us.

“I’ve told the lads in the dressing room that they don’t know how lucky they are to have fans who are on your side and who stick with you when things are down.

“It’s brilliant that we have been able to turn things round a little bit and hopefully it will continue.

“It’s inevitable that people do get carried away when you have three wins on the bounce — that’s massive in the Championship whether you are at the top or the bottom of the league because it doesn’t happen very often — and we’re hoping to make it four on Saturday.”

Chambers has been an integral part of Town’s impressive run under new boss Mick McCarthy but he added: “I’m not really enjoying the wins at the minute; it’s just more of a relief that we’re moving in the right direction.

“The lads have worked so hard to turn things round and the connection we are feeling with the fans is brilliant. Everyone is pulling together, I think we’re making Portman Road the fortress that it should be and long may that continue.

“The fans have been great and they deserve something to cheer about. For me celebrating with the fans is important. I think they stay there to the end and there’s a hell of a lot of journeys that they make to see us play so the least we can do is go over and acknowledge them.”

Nice to hear we're appreciated! We can be very proud of our fans when you look at the poor turn outs at some of the bigger clubs.

Top Man, saw you go over to Forrest Fans after the game which was great to see & they showed their respect back to you , just need your 10 team mates to show the same level of respect you do as it does not cost them many seconds to go over to the fans in the Sir Bobby Stand most games or when away from home!

Think the best player respect i recently saw at PR was when an away player was red carded and he walked around the ground and went and sat in with the away fans, very gutsy and respectful!

@Michael11, Completely agree, I think we as a club are very balanced when it comes to the teams success. We all hated being bottom but we were not spoil, we understood where we were and to just see us progressing now is something that we enjoy, thats not setting our standard low just being realistic. Blackburn seem to get gates of about 12,000 which despite the controversy off the pitch is still shocking, they booed Steve Kean constantly, maybe rightfully but I swear they were about 3rd when he left, they've not exactly improved since.

We are a patient lot Ipswich fans. Forest and Birmingham fans do get on their teams back which does them no favours. Our attendences aren't much to talk up at the moment, Mick should get us back though.
