McCarthy Appointment Reportedly Close
Monday, 29th Oct 2012 23:09

Town are close to naming former Wolves, Republic of Ireland, Sunderland and Millwall boss Mick McCarthy as their new manager, according to national newspaper reports. The 53-year-old and ex-Charlton and West Ham boss Alan Curbishley have always been viewed as the frontrunners to succeed Paul Jewell since the Liverpudlian’s exit by mutual consent last week.

If confirmed, McCarthy is expected to be joined at Portman Road by his former Wolves assistant Terry Connor with former Blues skipper Matt Holland, who played for the one-time centre-half with Ireland, believed to be another prospective member of the Barnsley-born boss’s staff.

A three-year deal is understood to be on the table for McCarthy, who has been out of work since leaving Wolves in February after more than five years at Molineux.

In the summer he spoke to Nottingham Forest about their vacancy prior to Sean O’Driscoll’s appointment, while more recently he has been linked with the likes of Bolton, Burnley, Blackburn and Crystal Palace.

Town chief executive Simon Clegg said last week that he was hoping to have the new appointment in place before Saturday's game at Birmingham City.

No!!!!!! Some people on here are so shortsighted.
Yes this guy might save us from relegation- and yes we need that to happen......
BUT- that can be achieved by playing football the right way- not the defensive hoofball this guy plays!
Probably the same folk who banged on about Jimmy being a 'saviour' and 'hero' .....lol

Walk the Wark

We might be shortsighted but the immediate priority is to keep us in the Championship. If and when that goal is achieved we can look at the longer term objectives.

Of course we want to play football 'the right way' whatever that is, but survival in this league must be paramount. If hoofball achieves this, then fine; I for one am prepared to sacrifice failing purist football principles in favour of a more pragmatic playing style if we can cement our place in this league. The rest can follow.

Although Curbs was my preferred choice you can't always say MM played long ball football.
He had a hard working team, with players like Jarvis, Kightly, Hunt, Doyle and Fletcher in the attacking areas - hardly just 'big lumps' up front....

MM has a good promotion record, better than any other of the candidates. To label him a long ball manger is unfair, depends who he has had to work with. I'm sure he could do something with our lot, minus the bulk of loanees and any who aren't up for it. Coonor is experienced too and they obviously work well together and if ME/SC can bring in Matt as well, that could just be the spark of inspiration to complete the jigsaw. Feeling good about future.
