McCarthy Appointment Reportedly Close
Monday, 29th Oct 2012 23:09

Town are close to naming former Wolves, Republic of Ireland, Sunderland and Millwall boss Mick McCarthy as their new manager, according to national newspaper reports. The 53-year-old and ex-Charlton and West Ham boss Alan Curbishley have always been viewed as the frontrunners to succeed Paul Jewell since the Liverpudlian’s exit by mutual consent last week.

If confirmed, McCarthy is expected to be joined at Portman Road by his former Wolves assistant Terry Connor with former Blues skipper Matt Holland, who played for the one-time centre-half with Ireland, believed to be another prospective member of the Barnsley-born boss’s staff.

A three-year deal is understood to be on the table for McCarthy, who has been out of work since leaving Wolves in February after more than five years at Molineux.

In the summer he spoke to Nottingham Forest about their vacancy prior to Sean O’Driscoll’s appointment, while more recently he has been linked with the likes of Bolton, Burnley, Blackburn and Crystal Palace.

Town chief executive Simon Clegg said last week that he was hoping to have the new appointment in place before Saturday's game at Birmingham City.

Those who fear that this is a 'quick' decision are so naive - if they really believe that the process of selecting the new manager did not start before Sunday!

MM is the right kind of manager to ensure that we don't get relegated and to establish a platform for the future. Our defense has been pretty hopeless for the last decade. If anyone can sort it out, is should be MM.

Time will tell....

Welcome Mick. Captain fantastic for ireland will sort out these overpaid primadonnas. A ledgend for me. Put judas(keane) in his place. Chops Edwards Martin JET be afraid be very afraid. Youth will get a chance once he has stabalised the club. Would love to have Matty back also.

Would be a great appointment - especially with that management team. He won't put up with a lack of work effort and with someone like Matty H on board, you've got someone who's both intelligent and passionate about our football club.

It's time to cut the negativity and get behind a new era

MM always comes across extremely well in media interviews and his track record is excellent. Could be a very positive appointment.
Agree he will sort out the likes of Chopra Cresswell Jet and Edwards who all appear somewhat deluded and too big for the club.
I m sure he will start but playing two up front which has always been the achilles heel for PJ.

What's Terry Connor like as a coach? In favour of Matt Holland coming in to but know little of Connor other than his time as manager of Wolves and what i've seen on wikipedia.

Also, just been watching the highlights of the last 4 games back on iPlayer. Carlos Edwards is an utter shambles at right back. We all knew this a long time ago but watching it back over and over, he's abysmal. Play him wide right or get rid. Never a full back. He's been responsible for so many of the errors.

Mick Mills commented during the Derby game that we had little goal return in the forward players that Jewell put out and he was right: Campbell, Drury, Martin, Murphy and JET.

We passed up on Beckford, Bothroyd and Sharp in the loan window. Pretty staggering!!

Loan Players to leave:

N'daw - hasn't had a fair crack but we don't need 3 defensive mids and Hyam and Wellens are ahead of him.
Murphy - as well knew, not good enough especially when we should have had Boyd.
Luongo - Jury is still out for me on this as he could prove to be a real gem on a thriving side but too inexperienced for what we need now but has ability and hunger. Him and Wellens? Mmm...
Henderson - Maybe. Jury is still out. There's a need for 3 keepers but he's not a starter for me.
Moshni - Weird signing and smacked of desperation to me. Not interested.

Loan Players in:

1 - Out and out target mand with a decent goal return
2 - Dedicated and experienced right back unless Ainsley is the answer
3 - Real no nonsense Centre Half.

Terry o'connor been on sky sports and has said he wants to be back in the game as soon as not as manager again though as he will turn to that later on in his career. Sounds like he knows something from his mate mick maybe?

To me it's the club's structure that needs sorting out now. We need a footballing heavyweight on board between Evans and the manager. With an anonymous owner and a CEO with no footballing nous we will continue to flounder.

There was no way an inspired, brave choice of manager would have been made under the current regime. No Ole Gunnar Solksjaer, no Karl Robinson. There just isn't the gravitas at the club for a confident, ballsy decision like that.

McCarthy might be a tad dull but he's fairly tough. He will come in and hopefully sort out some of the mess and we'll make some kind of progress but, in my eyes, it won't be groundbreaking unless the structure above the manager changes.

Inevitably when things don't go right the manager will feel isolated and confidence will again disappear too swiftly. With recent managers this has been the pattern. There has been nobody to keep them motivated, keep them on their toes, nobody to share problems and bounce ideas off. A stronger, more respected figure to negotiate transfers.

It seems insane that this has not been addressed. Evans must be a smart man to have got to where he is. It surely wouldn't break the bank to bring somebody in. Even let Clegg continue with day to day running of the club but bring in a footballing heavyweight to work alongside him.

I can see how owning a football club could be fun and I can see how, in time, you would feel the need to dabble in the football decision making. However, I would appeal to you, Mr Evans, to put ego to one side and put your business hat back on. It was not long ago, under Keane, that we had 22,000 supporters per game and we now have around 17,000. Please put in place a structure that is based on long-term thinking. You will ultimately find this more rewarding. And so will the supporters of the once mighty, ITFC.

If this news is correct, I cannot think of a better partnership to get us out of the proverbial £$%& we are in at the minute.
It may not be pretty, but what I would give for a boring 1-0 win at the moment...especially after not winning at home since March 31st.

For those on here that are not happy with McCarthy, take a good look at our league position and tell me you would like to see us relegated to the 1st Division. Hope this brings the fans back because we need good support from here onwards.

I agree the long term loan deals are better and N'daw and Luongo both have good characteristics we need but we have to trim loan players, it's a given and with 5 midfielders, at least three of them have to go and other areas of the side addressed.

Reo-Coker and Wellens are better and more experienced but both on shorter term deals than Luongo and N'daw so it'll be an interesting call. Wellens is the type of player who'll respond well to Mick, not sure about Reo-Coker. No need what-so-ever for Murphy.

As for Martin - completely agree. Another player flattering to deceive in the same bracket as Edwards, Chopra and JET. If all 4 of them found their game we'd be in a much better place. Sadly, they don't seem to care.

This is absolutely the right appointment.

We are where we are, struggling at the bottom of the Championship with our team in a complete shambles - a similar situation that Bill McGarry found when he arrived at ITFC in October 1964. Odd that he went on to manage.........Wolves!

History is not quite repeating itself, but let's hope that McC does as well as McG did.

Is this a long term appointment? Need 43 points from 33 games and the majority of the teams at the bottom are now playing at that level so catching them means a real run of wins, not just 4 or 5. the squad does not have goals or defensive nouse to achieve that and waiting till January will be too late. So is MM going to be here through 2 or 3 years in Div 1 rebuilding? Anyone see Sheff Utd v Pompey? They would be tough opponents right now.

right now we need discipline and players to wake up and either play for the shirt or get out, mccarthy is perfect for us and this will stop people like chopra with his conituned antics too. Welcome Mick!!

I'd even support The Dark Lord coming back if he could guarantee an improvement in our fortunes, but after reading these comments from MM why would Town now tick all the boxes for him - the Mrs fed up with him around the house?

McCarthy can get a team up, knows the lower leagues well and has bought well, knows how he wants to play, will work to a strategy, experienced so hopefully will manage those above on their 'steep learning curve'
In the mess we are win could not have hoped for a better man- not a dream choice but I would be disappointed if he ended up at say Palace instead of us

10% more from all the players on Saturday and we might just get 3 points

Good thoughts, Gdiddy. Let's take some more perspectives:

*ITFC are in the worst position they've been in since 1955.

*After the sad experience with Jackie Milburn, the Cobbolds brought in Bill McGarry - the football wasn't exciting, but he steadied the ship.

*McCarthy did well at Wolves WITH A VERY TIGHT BUDGET. Although not my ideal football manager, he could be the man for the moment.

This guy turned down NF because he wanted a Prem job.

So why is he now prepared to take on the club adrift at the bottom of the second division, with a fruit cake owner and dysfunctional squad?

Desperation? Jewell was out of work and desperate.

The one thing in his favour is that he hates Roy Keane, so he should fit in well.

The new manager , whoever , will be taking on a poisoned chalice ! We never nowadays , referring to supporters , give any manager time to get results ! Get used to the idea that we will be relegated whoever comes in ! He will not be able to change players until January and by then we will be too far adrift !

Football management is now a short term prospect. Clubs simply can't take the rough with the smooth anymore. Though it must be said that ITFC have a better record than most in this respect. However, whatever pitch MMcC gives in an interview, his brief will inevitably be a short term one - Get us out of this mess. If he can he will be a hero, if not we will, no doubt, be looking for another sucker to take on mission impossible. We have all said that the next appointment must be the right one so whoever is appointed must have a degree of security to allow him to do the job his way. Thus rather than the widely stated 3 year contract we should be offering 5 years at least and live with the consequences.

I think he's the man to keep us up, going forward and long term I'm not so sure.
Terry Connor has been known as a "Wolves man", he might be a decent coach but I'd prefer more Ipswich men on the coaching staff, Holland is good, but also see about roles for Wark / Mills
