Town Interview Shearer
Thursday, 25th Oct 2012 19:28

TWTD understands that former England skipper Alan Shearer has been interviewed for the position of Town manager. The ex-striker’s only previous managerial experience was eight games as boss at Newcastle United at the end of the 2008/09 season.

The Magpies legend, who like Town owner Marcus Evans has been in Barbados this week, couldn’t prevent his already-relegation-haunted club from dropping into the Championship, managing only one win and two draws during his time in charge. He left that summer and was replaced by Chris Hughton.

Since that spell Shearer, 42, has been linked with various jobs, including the currently vacant position at Blackburn Rovers, while working as a pundit on Match of the Day

Capped 63 times by England, scoring 30 goals, Shearer was reported to have been a potential Town target when Roy Keane left the club 21 months ago.

Earlier today, Blues striker Michael Chopra, a one-time team-mate of Shearer’s at Newcastle, said he’d very much like to see him at Portman Road: “I would love to see Alan Shearer as manager. Such a good person and worked and played under some great managers, including Sir Bobby Robson.”

However, despite Shearer's undoubted profile and experience of playing the game at the highest level, comments made by chief executive Simon Clegg at last night’s Supporters Club AGM hinted that a man more experienced in management would be the club’s preferred choice: “This is not going to be a high-risk appointment.

“We need to have someone that we’ve got confidence in, who has got the necessary experience and skill-base to get us out of this current hole and get us to where we want to go in the long run.”

The Blues are likely to interview a significant number of candidates with Simon Clegg having indicated a great deal of interest in the job vacated by Paul Jewell on Wednesday.

Erm I have no idea what to say on this? I thought we would go for a older experienced head to try and get us out of this mess...perhaps not.

daleyitfc - how about instead of constant negative posts you come up with a suggestion instead. I would be genuinely interested in your choice.

Not my first choice but could do worse

Too risky for me. I think it will be Davies or McCarthy.

Coyle, Davies or McCarthy would all be much better choices. I'd rather have Alan 'no personality and out of touch' Curbishley than Shearer.

flunked at Newcastle, looks out of his depth even making comments on MOTD, doubt he knows much about the clubs problems.
Might be wrong though and at least it shows we are looking past the normal old rejects

I think Shearer could be a good option (just an opinion as clearly i have no back up for this) i wouldn't be too bothered with giving him a shot because personally i think we can't get any worse atm and any manager we bring in isnt going to make a huge difference on our position. But please please ITFC prove me wrong. I'm trying to keep the faith, i swear.

No experience, but is Alan Shearer another close friend to Marcus Evans.

As mentioned on here several times this is a huge and crucial appointment, love to know who the advisors are. Could it be a certain Deliah Smith and would Clegg fall on the sword if this appointment fails.

Would like to see Mick McCarthy placed in charge, may not be pretty but at this present time that is what we require.

Doubt we only interview him. There's another 38 people for goodness sake!

Here's hoping this is a no-go. 1- I don't think he'd demand the respect of the players for long, if at all, because he's a knob. 2- if anybody can point me towards anything insightful that he has ever said on MOTD that suggests even for a tiny nanosecond that he has any credentials whatsoever to be a manager at any level, well you've guessed by now readers, I'd be fascinated to hear what such words of wisdom were. Don't remotely want McCarthy to manage Town either, but in about 3 shows he has shown far more understanding of the game than MrCrapShirts. Also, call me old-fashioned. But I've seen AS stamp on a player. Allegedly. And I don't really want stampy fellows managing our nice family club. Mind you, RK did a real brilliant job, so maybe I am just too sentimental.......

Alan Shearer was a fantastic striker - no question. However, this alone does not make a good manager. Alan is not the right candidate for a club fighting relagation at the foot of the championship! This would be a very similar appointment to Roy Keane - but with less experience. Mr Evans/Mr Clegg - Ipswich need a manager with a current proven track record (not someone who has been out of the game for a long time).

Does Evans only choose his managers off the telly?

Dear god it's like Groundhog Day with Keane all over again.

Those saying we could do worse and that he understands the game have obviously never seen his punditry.

Is it true about the Daglish rumor? Anyone else seen him in Ipswich?

Another name over substance as we found out with Keane - I'd say no.

finally ipswich town saw sence and off loaded jewell.never the right man for our future.should have gone when playing barnsley last year but we turned that game to a win which prolonged the sacking.please can this be a turning point in ipswich town where we appoint a decent young manager who wants to make his name and treats ipswich like the biggest job of his career.start with the basics.give youth a chance who will pour sweat into this club and work as a unit to win.youth means commitment and money also for the club and its foundations to build on if sold on.ie conner wickam.oust the loanees and start fresh new manager new team.
