Clegg: Long List of 34 Names
Wednesday, 24th Oct 2012 16:27

Chief executive Simon Clegg says Town already have a long list of potential successors to Paul Jewell 34 names long. Clegg was speaking at a press conference after Jewell’s time at Town was ended by mutual consent earlier today.

Clegg said: “There is a process under way at the moment. I’m not going to go into any details on that. We want to appoint a replacement as quickly as possible.

“In the short-term, particularly given where we are in the table at this moment in time, the most important thing is picking up three points on Saturday, which is why I have asked Chris Hutchings to take on the role of caretaker-manager for that game and beyond if necessary.

“Until such time as we appoint a permanent replacement manager, Chris Hutchings will be in charge.“

Former Charlton and West Ham boss Alan Curbishley is widely believed to be the leading candidate to be Jewell’s replacement, but Clegg wouldn’t be drawn on specific candidates: “There are a lot of people out there who are in the frame.

“We have a long list of about 34 names. We’re in the process of whittling that down to a short list and are hoping to get to a position where we can make a formal announcement as soon as possible.

“When you find yourself in a situation like this, first of all we’ve pulled together a list of names ourselves, in terms of the owner, myself and the owner’s advisors, but a number of people have applied. The phone has been red hot since midday today.”

Ex-Crystal Palace boss Dougie Freedman, whose move to Bolton appears to have hit a stumbling block, is also another manager understood to have been approached by the Blues, but again Clegg wouldn’t be drawn: “There is wild speculation out there and a number of names have been mentioned, but you wouldn’t expect me to comment on any one individual.”

Other bosses likely to be linked are the likes of Alex McLeish, Owen Coyle, Billy Davies, Steve Kean and Mick McCarthy, while Clegg says there has been interest from interested parties both from the UK and abroad.

Selling the club to a manager is Cleggs time to shine lets hope he makes a good job of it.

It's obvious from this post that whoever comes next wont please everybody but I am hoping the sh1t we have served up after the last few years means that this is rock bottom and through the chaos we can improve and rebuild.
Until a manager is appointed we need to get behind the team as relegation will be catastrophic. Who ever is appointed the fans need to give a chance to and realise that there is no real spine in this team. Building could take a number of years but I would rather take a decade of doing it properly than these quick fix options that haven't worked over the last couple of appointments. We need to get Klug focusing on youth development, get rid of the loaners, the driftwood and the hasbeens. We need to make ourselves safe and start again the Ipswich way

And we'll still appoint another duffer. Does anyone really have any confidence Evans and Clegg have any clue what makes a decent football manager?

How about Paul Mariner or Frank Yallop with Matt Holland as assistant and Mick Mills as Director of Football. That would then leave Simon Clegg to run the rest of the football club

Would be happy with Mick McCarthy, Owen Coyle or Billy Davies. Maybe Steve Cotterill, would be disappointed if we appointed Alex McLeish,Darren ferguson, megson, Kean or Di Canio in particular.

Saying that Ian Holloway really stood out when you look through the names. Motivates players, a proper character, an eye for young talent has won a promotion, would stamp his authority, players would immediately respect him and we are a bigger club than Blackpool.

What a thankless task, trawling through all those names!! Whoever is appointed has a mammoth task on their hands .
I just hope that the players will rally round and actually play for the shirt as well. With all the loanees we have this may be difficult.
This unfortunately will just be another season that we are trying to survive in the Championship. Barring a miracle this is the cold reality of it all. Everyone had such high expectations for this season but we find ourselves in a battle to survive situation. Fortunately there is still time to achieve some credibility . With the right person hopefully this will be achieved.

My worry is they will go for a cheap option and choose someone who won't want a big transfer budget or be too much trouble.

Shouldn't the Chief Exec also carry the can for the league position, poor attendances, fan dissilusionment etc?

We do have a fairly decent group of players, but there are some clear problems such as the lack of a big commanding centre back, the absence of a proper right-back, and the lack of a target man up front. Jewell did try to sign Davies for the latter role of course, but the club haggled over the transfer fee for weeks and we lost out...will it be the same story regardless of who is manager?

Just look at Curbishley's CV on Wikipedia - he has a hell of a good record - he could be the man to give us a chance of a long term future - also tough enough to handle players - and excellent record at picking out talent - why not him with Matt Holland as his assistant ?

A loaned manager might be the way forward fit in we'll with the loaned team. 34 names eh! Keep your options open clegg, we'll probably get name 35.

Why is Hutchings still here? He's awful too and what's he ever done?!

As much as i'd love a young manager to come in with fresh idea's it could be a bit too much of a risk given our current climate. Terry Butcher is my favourite candidate with someone like Matt Holland alongside!
