Loach Taken Out of Firing Line
Friday, 19th Oct 2012 06:04

Town boss Paul Jewell says keeper Scott Loach has been taken out of the firing line following a drop in form. The Blues manager signed Stephen Henderson on a three-month loan from West Ham earlier this week and the Irishman is set to make his Town debut at Hull on Saturday.

Jewell says even before the errors in the 2-1 defeat to Cardiff a fortnight ago, the summer signing from Watford had been under par: “I think Scott’s lost a little bit of confidence, not just against Cardiff, I think one or two goals have gone in and he’s not been at his best.

"So we just want to take him out of the firing line for a bit. He’ll come back strongly I’m sure.”

He says keepers should expect the same treatment as outfield players if their performances aren’t up to scratch: “Goalkeepers like to think they’re different to anybody else, but they’re not.

“If people are having a bad time or are not playing well, they get left out. Goalkeepers are no different.

“I don’t see the big deal in it. Scott’s a young lad, he’s had ups and downs before. He’s got to take it on the chin like everybody else.

“I haven’t had a chat with him, but I think he knows that he hasn’t been at his best lately and we’ve brought somebody else in to push him along.

“Equally, anyone who comes in, if they don’t do well, their place will come under scrutiny. No one’s guaranteed a place, whether that’s a loan player or a player that is permanent.”

Regarding Henderson, Jewell says widespread reports in January which claimed that the former Pompey man had turned down personal terms with Town after the clubs agreed a deadline day fee, were incorrect: “We made an offer for three players at Portsmouth and it was rejected.

“I spoke to the lad Joel Ward, I had him here, but other than that we never got to speak to Jason Pearce or Stephen Henderson.”

And I'm not anti competition for places IF the player brought in was better and more experienced than Loach. Henderson is not I'm afraid.

Out of respect for Scott Loach PJ should have spoken to him first rather than the media, not good man management I'm afraid.

The man is a moron , well known that his confidence was low after treatment at Watford so how is this going to help ie publicly blaming him followed by loan keeper followed by dropping in the press ( not even having spoken to him ) gee I would love to work for a boss like u jewel

This tells you everything about our so called manager. Shocking man management and how can that build confidence.

And what now if Henderson is at fault and we lose. Drop him?

The only drop in form concerning most knowledgeable Town supporters is your's Jewell, which has been constantly poor since you arrived at our club as now far exceeds Keane's incompetence!

I did not think it was possible to make keanes man management skills look good.

Not a PJ putter but that is terrible man management. You talk to the man first not the media. Must be a bit like finding out your wife is doing your brother live on the Jerry Springer show!

I watched pre season game against Hammers, Scotland beat Henderson easy from just outside the box, Henderson was glued to the spot.

Hang on, when Henderson didn't come in Jan PJ said it was because his wage demands were too high! More contradictions/lies from the clown. CLOWN OUT!!!

Looking forward to seeing Richard Wright playing for Man City at the weekend - Roberto Mancini is bound to "do a PJ" after Joe Hart's error against Poland...

PJ doesn't seem to realise that if players are losing confidence, it's his job to restore it. What did PJ do after the Cardiff game? A good manager would have told Scott not to worry about one "bad day at the office", and that he has a couple of weeks training before the next game to get back his Watford / Huddersfield form. Instead, he publicly singled out Loach blaming him for the defeat, and went out shopping yet again in the loan market...

It's really indicative of poor management and indicative that the time is up for Jewel. If my boss did that to me I would resign and sue for constructive dismissal. This proves Jewell really has no idea about building team spirit only matching his lack of tactical knowledge. He's got to go.

Why oh why didn't we stump up more wages for kucszyk (however you spell it!?). Best player at Brighton apparently!

My feeling is Jewell will be taking one in the chin soon enough...

Another rubbish news day!!

Absolutely ridiculous! ALB was the better of the two keepers at fratton park! poor old scotty makes a mistake and jewell drops him, likes thats gonna "improve" loach's confidence.
However with reo-coker and maybe chops/campbell up fronty we certainly look alot stronger in the forward areas than the back. COYB!

I knew this would happen and said it at the time we signed him. Scott Loach is not very good, ALB is better but because he is supposed to be a Town fan he was going to be better than Buffon in the eyes of some.
As Keanish says, why didn't we do more to get a quality keeper like Kuzszac (again, however you spell it) in. I think Henderson is possibly better than what we have already though.

“I haven't had a chat with him..."
I find that quote more amazing than anything else. Wouldn't it have been good to have just pulled him aside and explain his thinking beforehand?

It was Loach's fault we lost last time out.

I am dismayed to read Jewell saying this in the media without speaking with Scott first.

Yes, hands up, Loach was to blame for the Cardiff defeat. Before that though I thought his form wasn't too bad, didn't he made good saves at Brighton and Cardiff before that and not long ago he saved a penalty?

BillBlue added 10:20 - Oct 19
Well perhaps PJ feels the same way as I do about Loach. I have only seen him play once and I immediately said 'I would put him straight onto the first train back to Watford'. The clown gave three points away which had been very well won and if I were PJ I would never speak to the idiot again. Goalkeeper - hell!. Well done PJ. COYB
