Town Back in For Campbell
Thursday, 4th Oct 2012 16:58

QPR striker DJ Campbell is understood to be one of the players Paul Jewell is hoping to add to his squad on loan before the weekend. As TWTD reported last week, the Blues failed to land the 30-year-old prior to the Barnsley game. Leicester’s Richie Wellens is also believed to be on the Town manager’s wish list.

Campbell had been expected to join Blackpool but despite protracted negotiations that deal has not yet gone through.

Having been a youth player with QPR and Aston Villa, much-travelled Campbell began his senior career in non-league with the likes of Chesham, Stevenage Borough, Billericay Town and Yeading before moving into the Football League with Brentford and then the Premier League with Birmingham.

Since then, the Londoner has represented Leicester, Derby and Blackpool (twice on loan, once permanently), before returning to QPR again last summer for a fee of £1.2 million. Having rarely been involved with Rangers, the former England C international had long been tipped for a fourth spell with the Seasiders.

Midfielder Wellens, 32, is yet to feature for the Foxes this season having previously played with Manchester United, Blackpool, Oldham and Doncaster. A loan move to Sheffield United recently fell through.

Speaking earlier today, manager Paul Jewell said he was hopeful of adding two players to be his squad before Saturday's game at home to Cardiff with Southend's Bilel Mohsni already having revealed that he is set to put pen to paper on a three-month loan deal.

not so interested in wellens, think we've got more than enough midfielders treading on each others toes already.on campbell yes for defo,we just need to get someone putting it in the net a bit more often and i think d j could be the spark we need to get us going

we seem to be trying to sign players at post haste now...why is that I wonder?

Mohsni has been offered 3 months on the back of one training session this week- yet just a couple of weeks ago the coaching staff and Jewell wanted to see him tested against better opposition because they weren't sure. So what's changed?

Martin seemingly to be offloaded...does this mean Boyd is on his way?

I'd like to see Martin stay, but wouldn't be devastated to see him go, if that were the case. With his form as it is, he doesn't seem like he offers too much, although of course his work rate and attitude are fantastic attributes. A replaceable player, perhaps, but when have we adequately replaced players? (McAuley, Norris, etc)

On topic, DJ Campbell was fantastic for Blackpool at one point, which was why QPR snapped him up. Seems like he didn't have the consistency for another good Premier League campaign, but dropping down to this level could do him (and us) the world of good.

Wellens on the other hand, I'm wary of. Not too aware of how good he is, although obviously Leicester must have seen something in him at some point. My only concern is that we have good cover in midfield, and a 32 year old is hardly someone who will be a long-term prospect. Possible we're looking for leadership in the centre, which hopefully a player with his experience would have.

Building for the future, eh ?

Jewells future, how ever long that is

We have had all summer to get a good squad together, this is merely patching things up on a make do and mend basis, yet again.

If we get all these, that would make SEVEN loans. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think you can only play 5 at a time

well at least the music should improve with a proper d j

We do need to improve our strike force, so I'd welcome Campbell.

Yes, the loans are adding up. People will draw comparisons with Norwich's relegation season. We must go for loans who we can realistically turn into permanent signings in January.

good player on his day, not entirely sure he's the right kind of striker we need though. He Chops and Scotland are much of a muchness

Anybody heard Town have signed Wellens from Leicester on a months loan?

Mixed feelings on this one. Having seen DJ Campbell play quite a bit for Leicester, he never seemed to fit in there. He never really clicked at Birmingham either, but he was excellent at Blackpool. Strikes me as the kind of player that is only a fit with certain teams, and I have no idea whether ITFC would be one of them.

Still, with the possibility that we could be, what's the harm in trying? :)

I can see Campbell as a good stop gap signing, especially as we are bereft of goals. Hard to see him partnering Chopra, though. I would guess wages have been the issue preventing him going to Blackpool - wouldn't he rather go to a club where he had done well before & at the right end of the table?

Would like to see him in with a view to a permanent as he can score goals at this level.
He will also be able to cover for the injured Taylor and Chops, who may have other things on his mind!
We live in hope as we do not have the best track record of luring strikers!

If there is some sort of press conference ahead of saturday's game, can someone from TWTD please ask Jewell why we'll end up with 7 (that's seven) loanees in the current squad when only a few weeks ago he admitted that he'd made a mistake last season in bringing in so many loan players?

The words "arse" & "elbow" are springing to mind.
