Town to Open Hyam Contract Talks
Monday, 10th Sep 2012 22:41

TWTD understands that Town are set to open contract talks with midfielder Luke Hyam. The 20-year-old was controversially handed only a one-year deal in February, but the former Northgate High School pupil has impressed manager Paul Jewell enough to be offered new terms.

Jewell announced his intention to approach the academy product regarding new terms last month when he spoke about the youngster in glowing terms: “He’s been terrific. I’ve got to take my hat off to Luke Hyam. He’s an example to all players when they think all the world’s against them.

“He wasn’t even in our reserves side last season on a regular basis and I think he’s shown a brilliant attitude.

“I think he’s improved as a player, I think his confidence is coming through. He’s going to have peaks and troughs, but he will definitely be one that we will want to give a new deal, no doubt about that. That’ll be sooner rather than later. I haven’t spoken to him about it, but it’s one that I’ve spoken to the owner about.

“He’s done well, really well, and he’s got a lot of improvement in him. He’s an example to all the young lads who think the door’s closed on them - it’s never shut.”

Hyam, whose current weekly wage was reported to be just £650 a week by one of last weekend’s tabloids, has been linked with Leeds United and Wolves, but is understood to be keen to remain with his hometown club.

Glad to hear it as IMO he is the best thing since Wickham and Rhodes to come through the club. If he wants to stay at his home club too then, offer him a good contract that will keep him at Town.

To be fair, seems to have been handled perfectly by town so far.

Well it is a relief that he loves this club and wants to stay here (perhaps that is why the club insulted him with 650 quid a week?? I earn more than that and I dont play in the second tier of English football) because if Leeds or Wolves offered him a low pay contract (by their standards) then I would not blame him for leaving this club! 650 pounds a week for a first team player (he helped save this club last year).

CLEGG OUT !!!!!!!!!!!!! CLEGG OUT!!!!!!!!!!! and I wish I could abuse Simon Clegg but I have already been warned and must watch my language. Simon Clegg you are lower than the soil in the gutter.....!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

He has done really well despite rubbish treatment by the managment - should never have been offered a short term contract on a pittance.

It is always a pleasure to see local lads coming through the ranks and doing well. Keep up the good work Luke; you've certainly earnt a contract extension!

Let's hope management can now sort out the Martin situation (yes, I know that he was a signing rather then a local lad, but he has done well and we want to keep him).

Come on Clegg and Jewell pay him £800 a week and another 1 yr deal and let other clubs come and get him even if he gets a decent contract Jewell wont play him just look at last week dropped after being the best player against Blackburn and Watford typical Jewell.

Has played well, but he isn't the finished article yet. Bit early to gamble on giving him a high paid 3 year contract IMO.

Just because a lot of players get inflated wages it doesn't mean that this practice has to continue.

Its was a disgrace he was only offered a year in the first place, at least get him on a 3 year deal so we can get some sort of sell on.

We currently have ONE central defender training at the club whilst the other is halfway accross the world playing Tahiti or whoever they are and is ordinary at best!

What I find absolutely astonishing is, mid September, we are having the same conversation about centre backs as we did at the start of the summer, unbeleivable. Anyone telling me there isn't a couple of decent centre backs in the lower league??!! I just find it incredible we are scrabbing around, yet agin, in the loan market for a reserve 34 year old centre back from Stoke and a player kicked out by the mighty Southend.

The club keep blagging to us that they are ambitous and want premiership football are hardly demonstrating such ambition. I find it all incredibly frustrating. I'm not an "expert" but even I can see we are ordinary at best at the back. The rest of the squad are improving with the signings that we made looking good which makes the blindingly obvious centre back issue even more frustrating.

Anyway time to watch England, oh look another so called "expert" is on there, Roy Keane!!

This lad has a big future!!

....Mr Jewell, he will only get better if u play him. He loves to pick out the wide men and reminded me so much of matt holland with his performance against Blackburn.

if i was luke, i wouldn.t sign then walk away at end of season. collect six figure signing on fee. ipswich are short so we.ll have to play him. same for martin. more cash lost by our businessman owner.

A year ago Jewell advised he had learnt his lessons regarding contracts and wouldn't let ANY of them get within a year left for players we wanted to keep He also promised us that he appreciated he had made a mistake with the amount of reshuffling and volume of players coming in and would restrict this, starting with minimal loanees.

We have 11 first team players contracts up within 9 months. We have 3 loanees at the club with at least 1-2 more coming in and some fans continue to be blinkered to the tactical ineptitude & outdatedness of Jewell.

Criticising our own club for mistakes is not against the law. We pay good money to see games and expect a certain level of professionalism in return.
