Town to Open Hyam Contract Talks
Monday, 10th Sep 2012 22:41

TWTD understands that Town are set to open contract talks with midfielder Luke Hyam. The 20-year-old was controversially handed only a one-year deal in February, but the former Northgate High School pupil has impressed manager Paul Jewell enough to be offered new terms.

Jewell announced his intention to approach the academy product regarding new terms last month when he spoke about the youngster in glowing terms: “He’s been terrific. I’ve got to take my hat off to Luke Hyam. He’s an example to all players when they think all the world’s against them.

“He wasn’t even in our reserves side last season on a regular basis and I think he’s shown a brilliant attitude.

“I think he’s improved as a player, I think his confidence is coming through. He’s going to have peaks and troughs, but he will definitely be one that we will want to give a new deal, no doubt about that. That’ll be sooner rather than later. I haven’t spoken to him about it, but it’s one that I’ve spoken to the owner about.

“He’s done well, really well, and he’s got a lot of improvement in him. He’s an example to all the young lads who think the door’s closed on them - it’s never shut.”

Hyam, whose current weekly wage was reported to be just £650 a week by one of last weekend’s tabloids, has been linked with Leeds United and Wolves, but is understood to be keen to remain with his hometown club.

About time;but like with most things at Ipswich they seem to take so long to get round to buying players and sorting out contracts .Mc Cauley is now a regular centre back for Premiership WBA,and could probably have been retained had the Owner moved quicker. What about Lee Martin,or is he asking too much for the new look frugal approach.I get the impression that ME's enthusiasm has waned somewhat since he first took over, with the Premiership looking further away now than before he took over!Am I the only one who feels this way?

3 year deal please, he's earned it with his attitude.

On top of that he's good enough, and with the right guidance and coaching he will continue to improve.

Seasider.

Not the only one at all.

A Sloth would sort out contracts quicker.

Fantastic - well deserved indeed. Wish we had more like him who play their heart out for the club. £10k for Boyd? He's having a laugh.

well played Luke Hyam, keep up the hard work as you'll need to with our ropey defence.. as for slowness in the signings department.. it's as if my once great club has no credit, no attraction and all pulling power has been eaten away by something.. we already need to bring in players to survive rather than thrive.. Big changes needed I believe.. or is this me being a doomonger??

I really would like to see Hyam back in the team again. We seem so overloaded in his position, just hope that he has more game time than Luongo and N'Daw because they are only loanees!

itfc1981- we have NO idea what goes on in contract talks, but ill hazard a guess that a) marcus got smart after spending a LOT of money and will no longer pay over the odds (good) and b) we pay the lowest amount in the country in agents fees and all our targets end up else where and our out of contract players start leaving? now im no mathmatican.....

Seasider where's your proof? You made a statement as fact now show us the proof. Fed up with idiots making assumptions and trying to pass them off as fact to justify their arguments.

"[T]errific," "brilliant," "new deal, no doubt about that," an example to all the young lads," ... if that doesn't get one of our previous young Academy hopefuls a contract, then nothing will. Reward him with a good deal. There's still plenty of time for him to develop, and he will reward us back. COYB.

I have got some proof, last year we offerd Hyam a years contract. Thats poor management and boardroom control. you protect your assests. It was clear to those with vision he was a super player.

That offer was about as stupid as Trotter's offer of a year. You cant bet on ITFC to do anything that involves common sense.

@seasider we all need to remember that Evans is not a town fan and that ITFC was just a tax vehicle for him. which is we will buy the lad from southend for a set of kit and a bag of balls while those with prem ambitions sign players left out of prem 25 man squads. happy to eat humble pie if proven wrong.

With some of the comments above do we really want the club to sign players and try for the premiership. Bossman and Seasider are two examples of how poor some of our so called fans are.

Obviously these two would rather ME up sticks and left. Then watch the club do a Portsmouth and in all likelihood go out of business completely.

Still it would give people something to moan about.

As for Hyam, sign in on a 3 year deal, the transfer fee would be bigger than, and then send him out on loan to get experience of playing regular football. Still has a lot to learn and not sure about his rashness in the tackle. Time will tell I am sure but for me he lacks something to make him a regular in the side

Did PJ not say about 3 months ago that he would be looking to offer Luke a new deal? Get it done before another club does! Lee Martin signed a new deal yet or is he going to be allowed to walk away too?

Good news, hope he gets a good contract offer. Latest from the EADT is that Jewel is cooling his interest in the boy from Southend as he has another CB trialist to look at??
