Jewell: Plenty of Clubs With More Spending Power Than Town
Saturday, 1st Sep 2012 06:08

Paul Jewell admits that there are plenty of clubs in the Championship with greater spending power than the Blues at present, but insists it’s important for the club to keep its spending in check.

Jewell is pleased to have added Peterborough’s Paul Taylor to his squad, but says the initial fee that Town paid isn’t a lot when compared to the cash being splashed elsewhere: “We’ve paid £1.5 million for Paul Taylor, is that not a big signing?

"It’s probably not a big signing when you see that Blackburn are paying £8 million for one [Jordan Rhodes] and Cardiff have just paid £3 million for another one [Nicky Maynard], having signed Craig Bellamy, having signed Heidar Helguson.

“I think the supporters look around the Championship and they realise it’s a division that’s full of teams that have got more spending power than maybe we have. Clubs that are expected to be at the top of the league, but not everyone can be top of the league.

“Not everyone can go throw money around and, we keep on going on about it, clubs will go out of business one day. That’s the last thing anyone wants.

“We’re not penny-pinching, we’re just trying to do things properly. If there’s no money to spend or not a lot of money to spend and you put your club at risk by spending that money, I don’t think people want that.

"It’s happened to Glasgow Rangers, it happened to Leeds United. Bigger clubs than Ipswich have been financially in trouble.

“I take responsibility for all the signings and I make the targets and if we can’t arrange a deal with the players, we can’t arrange a deal with the players. You can’t have every player you want.”

Yeh fair point to a certain degree but we also run the risk of falling even further behind the clubs who are showing their ambition with making signings .Im not sure i would agree with the "We're not penny pinching , we're just trying to do things properly" remark . I completely get it that we cant just chuck stupid money at players but come on , how many deals have we failed to do when clubs around us are adding several players to their squads . We must of free'd up a whole lot of cash with all the contracts we've canceled and players who have left and i still go back to the 8 million from connor we received . Even to see that reinvested would please me and a whole lot of other fans im sure . Anyway , very happy with the new signings we have made and heres hoping to 3 points today against Huddersfield ... It is not all about money. How much money did Norwich spend when they went up? What they had though, was a solid defence, good teamspirit and a manager making the right decisions about which players that should be brought in. I am fairly happy with Taylor and N´Daw arriving, but letting Delaney go without a replacement is just plain silly when the defence is our biggest problem! Still believe some people have been overracting to a decent start of the season (bar 0-6 of course). A win today would be nice :)

The fact is we have never been a club who have thrived when there is cash to be spent. Burley spent loads and it went pear shaped. Keane wasted millions. So for ipswich splashing loads of cash has never been the answer. Look at Joe Royle, did wonders when you consider. I Believe that money in the main should be spent on the youth system, the scouting network, the coaches and the training Facilities, not the bloody agents and greedy players. Having said that its nice to treat yourself now and then, and we have done just that in signing Taylor.

So lets get down to portman road today, forget the last two results and cheer on the boys ....COYB

One or two of those big-spending clubs will struggle and end up going bust. Hard times are coming - if it works then great if it doesn't then boom! They can't all go up.

If so why do we go in for so many players? We could sign them, the real truth is that we fail to offer realistic wages these days.

We have to challenge some of these comments which show a lack of ambition and excuse the missing CB's and target man this squad desperately needs. Otherwise we will end up mid-table in league one listening to messages from the club owners and management about fair play rules and why so many league one clubs have more spending power than us.

I agree that its good housekeeping to watch the spnding, and yes we have released some dead wood, but what i do not understand is why we are still paying Ellington? he has given/offered nothing to our club yet still picks up a healthy pay cheque every month, surely he was one to unload!

i understand that we dont have the money to spend like other clubs, but what i dont understand is for at least the last 5 seasons our back 4 has been rocky at best,
im sure i speak on behalf of most decent town fans when i ask how we fail to address this season after season,
it really hurts me to see town take heavy defeats but i fear there may be more along the way. coyb

We must be offering realistic wages as we have a squad of happy players who are within our wage structure and are proud to wear our shirt. I'm afraid a lot of players and agents are chancers and have unrealistic expectations. We have to be smart with our cash not throw it around. Its been said many times but big money doesn't guarantee success - ask any Portsmouth or Rangers fan. Despite what some morons keep saying Clegg, Evans, Jewell want success at this club as much as us but they have finances to manage and we can only offer what we think players are worth and what we can afford. Its a fact of life and people need to get real. We are not Man City or Chelsea.

Still cant actually believe we let delaney go without a back up coming in. I am far from the smartest person on the planet but everyone knows you get a replacement before letting them go. I cannot believe the club will actually let it be only having 2 CB's on the books.

Leicester threw money away with sven goran Eriksson, realised their mistake and got rid of the Swedish muppet and also ended up losing a big wad of money in the process... Like Matt Mills £4.5m move from Reading in July 2011 . sold to Bolton for a lot less this summer.
They must still have a good few big earners remaining from that failed exercise including a certain Nugent

Wrightyblue....Dont agree, over spending by previous regime ruined this club, thats why Evans owns us now. the fact is we have never fully recovered from Administration and thats the fact, we were in ruins when evans took us over and sure progress has been non- existent, you ever considered where we might be had evans not took us over? i dread to think!

Here's another thought, went to olympics the other week, was great to see how all the athletes were lifted by the support and positive energy generated by the crowd. I for one am not pleased with how things are at our club right now. Everyone has an opinion and thats ok, and heres mine. I honestly believe there people who would possibly go to games but come on here and read all the destructive negativity spoken by some of the totally negative posters and decide to stay away , we need our twelfth man more than ever. I dont believe any positivity can arise from such Negativity....A massive well done to the guys and gals who have spent small fortunes and travelled hundreds of miles just recently..... COYB

I am reading through comments on here and a lot of people unhappy. I just feel we have wasted so much money on wages of has beens. We need to do what Norwich, Charlton and Southampton did sign hungry players. We should be looking at Ryan Hall, Matt Ritchie, Mcfazden and look to be bringing players from academy through again. We have over last five years got into signing the wrong players for wrong reasons. I want to be able to relate to players who are proud to play for our club.

Well said Dissboy,

I'm sure that ME has noted the fee that Huddesfield have been paid for JR, a fee which should have been paid to us, the club that developed him.

Imagine where we might be had we not paid vast amounts to journey-men underperformers and, instead, given youth the chance. The Wickham and Rhodes cash could have funded further youth development, rather than than been wasted on the 'damaged goods' we have been invited to watch.

I just hope that the latest bunch of incomers fit the Magilton/McCauly mode rather than Pablo/Bullard/Priskin...........etc. etc

@Dissboy - agree with your posts, infact your first post is pretty similar to one I made a few weeks back. When Ipswich finished 5th in the Premiership do you think we had tons of money to throw around then in relation to other teams, no. Unfortunately it was the next season things started to go per shaped with some poor signings. A club that has tended to do well when the chips are down financially speaking. There are clubs who are spending more than us but the quality of player they are buying isn't that much higher than the one's already here, it's all about commitment and wanting to play for the club, oh and a manager who is tactically aware.
