Jewell: We're Not Tough Enough
Tuesday, 28th Aug 2012 23:10

Town manager Paul Jewell bemoaned his side’s inability to see out tough periods in games after their 2-1 extra-time Capital One Cup defeat at Carlisle.

Jewell said: “It was hugely disappointing. We controlled the game in the first half. The chances we’ve missed, we should have put the game behind us.

“We’re not a team that can see out tough periods in games. One long ball over the top, a cross comes in and it’s a goal.

“We didn’t pass the ball well enough in the second half and it showed our frailties. We need some power and we need a bit of bite in the team.

“You start to think you’re making progress and when we get it down and pass it we’re nice. But when it becomes a little bit physical, a little bit not as pretty as it should be, we haven’t got enough people in the group who can see those out.”

He felt his team ought to have had the game won before the break: “In the first half we were in control of the game, Chops has had a one-v-one, Josh has had a one-v-one. Goals change games.

“We’re not ruthless enough all over the pitch. It’s all right people talking about passing the ball and pretty football, that’s OK, but you’ve got to earn that right and too many of us don’t [earn that right].

“Some of them think they’ve arrived, some of them think they’re good players because people have been saying nice things about them. The last two results should be a wake-up call to them.

“This is a fantastic football club but we have to do the things that good teams do, which is scrap and fight and see ourselves through tough times, not just in seasons, in games.”

As at Blackpool, he thought his side only played sporadically during the game: “We’re playing games for periods and patches. A bit like on Saturday. For the first half hour there was nothing in the game, then we gave a goal away.

“The second goal [tonight], I don’t know what’s going through Cressy’s mind. Again, I don’t think Scott Loach has had any real saves to make, but we look vulnerable when we come under pressure.”

On top of the result, there was more bad news with three members of his currently small squad having injuries: “Luke Hyam has a hamstring and Carlos hurt his groin early on. Josh Carson got a little bit of a tight hamstring. With the long journey we’ve got, it’s not ideal to have extra-time.

“We’re stretched right to the limit. Luke felt his hamstring late on against Blackpool and he hasn’t trained since then.”

Up to now I have supported Paul Jewell, but the time has come for him to call it a day. There has been no improvement in the team and the signings to date are no better than those they are intended to replace.
If you are really looking to get to the Premier League Mr Evans you need to act quickly and get in someone who can address the shortcomings Paul Jewell repeatedly highlights but seems incapable of doing anything about.
I witnessed both the disaster at Blackpool and Carlisle and the way things are going we are more likely to be returning to Carlisle next season than Blackpool.
Come on Mr Evans,do something about it before it is too late. The defence is full of holes, the mid field seems incapable of creating anything and when chances are created they are wasted by a poor strike force.

I think Saturday is vital: win and we're up there about 8-9th with a decent points total and Blackpool (and even Carlisle?) begin to fade into past; drop points and we're mid/lower table and fans (and ME) have two weeks to consider situation....

If the premise is going by last nights result we should have a lot of Managers to choose from for the Jewell Out Brigade!! take your pick from Clarke,Coyle,Bruce,Pearson,Keane,Freeman, Jol,Pullis and Zola. And thats not including the likes of Holloway from the last round.
Dont get me wrong I am not happy with the last two results but was more than happy before 1500hs on Saturday and do believe I will be again at 1745 this Saturday. It 3 league games in and we have won , drawn and lost against 3 good teams in this league. Get behind them not onto them

Always blaming his players and criticising them openly,no wonder Jewel cant get the best out of them,I think he should be sacked and dont give him any more time to ruin our club.

A kind of obvious stat I thought about, Watford, Blackburn and Blackpool have all taken maximum point in the other two games they've played, and we've managed to take four points from them so far.

Have to agree with you Seasider. Its one thing to call for Jewell to be sacked, but purile and derogatory comments don't reflect well on anyone. Is it too much to ask for at least semi-constructive criticism?

Oh dear-here we go again! It is the same old story for ITFC as over the last few years. The team is good and can play good football at times but not for 90 mins (or more) week in week out over a season. Paul Jewell knows it-we all know it-and it is so frustrating. Certainly Town aren't tough enough and overall just aren't good enough collectively and that includes all on the staff.

Town need someone with some inspiration and leadership and preferably everyone in the squad!
It seems our hopes and dreams are fading away already but Town can sort themselves out and we should never give up believing in and supporting ITFC! Let's all wake up and play our part to make ITFC great again.....
